Has anyone heard anything about this? Someone posted it at my message board and ESPN says nothign about it. At the Samprasw.com site is the only place I have seen the news so far. Is that a reliable source? Can anyone enlighten me?

Patrick McEnroe said today that both Todd Martin & Pete Sampras are going to be daddies by the end of the year.

Heh heh, maybe in 15 years or so they'll be a new faction of great tennis players, the children of the current men's players. Tim Henman, Todd, Andre, and now Pete will all have children soon.

Nah, that'd been too weird.

Last night I watched the TMS Canada on TSN and they did an interview with Pete and he confirmed that he indeed is going to be a dad. It was actually kind of *gasp* cute hearing him talk about how he couldn't wait to hold his child :)

I wonder what their kids' playing styles would be - I mean I don't think Henman's kid would be serving and volleying a ton since it's not quite effective

...and how weird would it be to see a Jaden Agassi vs. Christian Sampras final...maybe at Wimbledon with Pete presenting the trophy

Clearly they wish Federer's children to play tennis so their children can compete with the next Federer.

Interesting how children of great players rarely even play pro tennis, and even more rarely are great at it.

It is. I've often wondered at this.

How is it in other sports, though? I don't really follow anything other than tennis so I don't know enough to compare. It's a bit odd with other kinds of talent, too: many children of great actors are good actors in their own right, but children of great singers rarely are. Children of great painters, sometimes; children of great writers, very rarely.

I suppose it's more likely that a child would inherit generic 'athletic ability' or 'a good voice' than the various specific talents that go into the making of a great tennis player or a great singer, but it's still odd. Goes to show how big a role motivation plays in any kind of achievement.

Easy and simple answer:

1.All the money in the world = no need to do well = no desire and hunger.

2.Parents know how hard it is to be a top player and how much you have to sacrifice during your childhood to reach even the top 100 = no encouragement for their kids to step in their shoes(you always wish an easier life for your children than you had yourself ;) ).

3.The kids would be under constant media observation from a very early age if they chose the same career as their parents, even more so than usual = no private life, high media pressure from an early age is not desirable (e.g. Axel Merckx the son of the famous Eddy Merckx in cycling).

I bet 1000$ that none of Agassi's, Sampras' or Federer's kids will play professional tennis. All this: "Who's children will be the best tennis player?" is wishfull thinking at best.
My answer is: none of them.

I can think of Geoff Paish and Tony Mottram playing in the 1950s and their sons John Paish and Buster Mottram playing in the 1970s.

Certainly not great players, but some of the best in Britain in their day, and good enough to play Davis Cup
