Give me suggestions for a new title if you'd like, I'm too busy right now to think of something creative. I just thought that this thread was needed.

Mardy's playing in the Covington challenger next week. Best of luck to him.

Oh wait...

From http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/nfl/09/02/bc.katrina.spor tsrdp.ap/

The U.S. Tennis Association canceled the $50,000 men's Challenger event scheduled in Covington, La., the week of Sept. 12. A new USTA men's Challenger event will be scheduled for the week of Oct. 24 at a site to be determined.

Gosh. :(

Come on Mardy, you are way too good for this.

aceit

I think it's smart because his ranking is so damn low. Why not win a few challengers, get a few points and his confidence back? He needs both. :(

Deboogle!.
09-04-2005, 10:13 PM
oh no, he HAS to play challengers....that's not what I meant. I agree with you - he has no choice.

I just wish he didn't have to :( He shouldn't be, he's too good to be playing challengers.

I wish that after a few challengers he'll get back in the groove of things. Atleast that's what I hope because he certainly has the talent. :(

I wish he didn't have to either , but hopefully they'll help a lot.Assuming he can stay healthy, it should. Winning the 2 challengers back to back was really what got James going, I think. It's also what Andre did. Mardy's also GOT to make sure he is REALLY 100% before he goes out there. If he can bag a challenger title (or two or three or four:p) and get himself into the top 100 by year-end so that he can get into the AO directly, that will be really big, so that he can start there fresh. And he ought to get WCs into a lot of tourneys in the US so that he can work his way up. Let's just hope....

I'd also somehow like for Mardy to demonstrate that he really wants it. He needs to get into better shape and work harder. It's disappointing to hear the commentators question his work ethic whenever he does happen to make it onto tv or get a little attention. Show us you want it, Mardy. :awww:

I think most of you know that I'm not really a Mardy fan, but in case you didn't see it in that GM thread, I did speak to Scott Humphries on the first day of the USO (we were staying in the same hotel, but I only saw Mardy there once or twice). Scott told me that Mardy had done some off-court work during his time away this summer and that he had lost some weight (he guessed about 10 pounds). He said that it was now about matches and confidence, getting back into the groove, etc. There is a little bit of soreness in his wrist, so there is a teeny tiny mental block for Mardy, but nothing much really. Anyway, here is the US Challenger schedule for the rest of the year:

Sept 19th - Lubbock, TX
Sept 26th - Tulsa, OK
Oct 10th - Sacramento, CA (I'll be at this one)
Oct 17th - Calabasas, CA
Oct 24th - TBA
Oct 31st - Boston, MA
Nov 7th - Nashville, TN
Nov 14th - Urbana, IL

Lots of opportunites for him to pick up points before the AO entry cutoff.

Unfortunately I guess you keep going down before you go up :( Mardy actually had 2nd round points to defend at the USO, so losing in the first round cost him 30 points and 14 spots in the rankings. He's now 153

Also unfortunately is that Delray Beach last year was after the USO And Mardy won a round so he will lose points. :( Mardy also won a round each at Madrid, St. Petersburg, and Paris, so he will lose even more points :(

It's taking a long time for his wrist to heal :(

Deboogle!.
09-21-2005, 04:01 PM
Well it sounds like he may have tried to take the easy route - he saw 2 doctors, one suggested this minor surgery that he had and one suggested a more major one that would've kept him out for the year (remember when Mary Carillo was originally reporting that?). he went for the more minor surgery and may have cost him bigtime in the longrun. But how was he to know?

So, poor Mardy  Let's just hope he takes the time he needs to really get it better and also maybe it'll give him time to decide if he really wants this. I mean he doesn't have to look any further than one of his very best friends to see that it's all possible to come back - if you really want it.

He's gonna have a looooonnnnnnng way to go, unfortunately, and he's gonna have to hope he gets some WCs into the US tourneys, he'll even need WCs into challengers I think :(:(:(

He's lucky in that the early part of the season there are lots of tourneys here in the US who will give him WCs - Delray, Memphis, Vegas, maybe even IW and Miami - and the thing is that his ranking is so low right now that even if he goes and loses first round, those 5 points will help his ranking little by little. So yeah hopefully the tourneys will be generous to him :D AND hopefully he'll be healthy and FIT and that he will have worked on his game. His right wrist has been fine all along so his FH better have improved ;)

Well maybe I don't have a high enough standard, but I think out of all the tennis players from all the countries that were there--a Silver Medal is something to be proud of. The down side I see to it is that there are now studies on a letdown some even go as far as to say a depression after the Olympic Games. Maybe that is why Marty has has trouble winning after the Games? And I don't know if it would have been better if he had won the Gold Medal or worse for him?

Deboogle!.
12-01-2005, 04:08 AM
Well he totally blew a match against a guy who was in much worse physical condition than, on a surface that Mardy should've had a huge advantage. Had he won, he may have had a letdown, but it wouldn't have mattered b/c he would've won the GOLD MEDAL! Not that silver isn't great, it is, but, he was sooooooo crushed after that match, I'm getting sad thinking about how he looked in the pics. Mardy

That's what I meant - Massu was physically destroyed from the start, and you can see that he's trying desperately to slow things down from the start. Mardy knew it, and he took advantage of that. The Gold medal was within his grasp... I still don't know what happened during that evil bathroom break, but I'm convinced something did happen there because you just can't be rejuvenated after a couple of minutes. :(

If he'd have won the Gold medal, who knows, he might have gone on and achieve better things. But, with that lost, he lost his confidence as well, that's for sure... He did look a bit like his old self in the last couple of matches he played... Let's hope he's going to come back strong... :)

I think Mardy's cmeback will depend on how badly he wants it. Clearly, what happened to James was a big wakeup call for him. Hopefully the same kick in the butt is what will happen for his best buddy. Mardy needs to get himself into MUCH better shape, and he needs to work on his game. He has so many fantastic weapons and strengths, so if he could just improve his forehand and movement and fitness and head, he'd be right up there with the world's best.

The questions with him in the past have been, how hard is he willing to work, how badly does he want it. I just hope he decides he really wants it. Considering how little he's been able to play in the past many many months, he should have gotten himself into incredible shape (ha) and he should've had plenty of time to work on his movement and forehand, since none of those require use of his left hand.

We will see shortly, I guess. :scared:

Well we will be able to see what kind of shape he is in then and how well he is going to play. Sometimes a player misses tennis so much after they have had to be away from it so long due to an injury that they come back stronger than ever. Think of Kim after her wrist injury she really made a great comeback :)

I get the feeling his first tourney back could be Delray (he'll surely get a WC into it)

Or I suppose he could do the responsible, smart thing and build some confidence playing Waikaloa (Challenger) or whatever. But it sounds like he intends to start in January so I don't think Vegas will be his first tourney (and I'm sure he'll get a WC into that too)

He'll get a WC into pretty much any tourney in the US that he wants, I think. He won the silver medal, he's been in a couple big DC matches, etc, and he's popular. So yeah, he'll get into tourneys in the US for sure.

From Charlie Bricker's weekly column:

Mardy Fish, trying to get back on form after wrist surgery, plans to make Delray Beach (Jan. 30) his first tournament of next season, but he's not certain to be ready to play by then.

Serious injuries wreck season of promise for Mardy Fish

By KEVIN VAN BRIMMER
kevin.vanbrimmer@scripps.com
December 8, 2005

VERO BEACH — This was supposed to be a career year for Mardy Fish. Instead, 2005 turned out to be one of the toughest and most disappointing in his tennis life.

The ATP tour pro and former Vero Beach resident was coming off a 2004 season in which he played in the Davis Cup finals for the United States, won the silver medal at the Athens Olympics and picked up former pro tour star Todd Martin as coach.

"It would have been nice to make a move into the top 10 in the world," Fish said. "That's always been a goal. It was definitely frustrating knowing that after switching coaches to (Scott) Humphries and Todd that we weren't going to get to see where we could go. It didn't seem fair.":awww:

Fish, who is in Vero Beach this week for his third annual exhibition match benefiting the Adopt-A-Family program, learned quickly that life sometimes isn't fair.

Having climbed to the 17th spot in the world singles rankings by the end of 2004, Fish was poised last spring to begin his move to the world's elite players.

In early May, he tweaked his left wrist during practice in Rome two days before his opening match in the French Open, which he went on to lose.

By the end of September he'd undergone two surgeries.

Although he hasn't played a tournament since the U.S. Open in August, Fish said he hasn't been taking it easy. His only limitation is he can't hit his most powerful stroke, the two-handed backhand.:):(

Fish said the rehab hasn't been easy, especially during those times when he would drop practice points to players he knows he can beat.

"I went through times when I didn't want to play and didn't want to do anything," Fish said. "But when I didn't want to play, I still went out there. I'm trying to develop the weaknesses I have and make them strengths. I've been working on forehands and volleys. The forehand has definitely been something to work on.:D

"Maybe (the injury) was a blessing in disguise. It gave me the opportunity to work on things. I hadn't hit a backhand slice before but that's been something I've worked on.":yeah:

Martin said he has seen Fish improving his all-around game. When the veteran tennis pro first met with Fish in the fall of 2004 to discuss teaming up, improving Fish's forehand was on the list of goals for Martin.

And he said the time off might have helped Fish grow as a professional.

"I think Mardy did a very good job of accepting what the situation was," Martin said. "Despite knowing he wasn't going to accomplish as much as he hoped to at the beginning, he did a lot of things right. He certainly grew physically. He's a much better athlete now than he probably ever has been.:yeah::yeah::yeah:

"He learned a fair bit about the game and how to be professional. Those are great lessons to learn. If it took this overdose of reality for that, then yeah, maybe the injury was a blessing."

Fish said he expects to be ready for the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships at the end of January. He said not to expect to see him take it easy during Saturday's exhibition match with Martin.

"I'm going to push myself, and I'm going to try to beat him," Fish said. "Then when I do, I can have bragging rights that I beat him without my (two-handed) backhand."

Its so positive to know that he's trying to get in good shape and work on everything he's physically capable of. :yeah:  On the flip side, how frustrating must it be not being able to hit your best shot.

That's what I was hoping for - that he'd be working on the other stuff, esp. his forehand and fitness. So I think it's generally good news. All we can do now is hope that the time off made him desire it more, too :)

I don't know if this was posted before: interview with Etcheberry on Hingis and then he talks about Mardy as well. Good news!

The Tennis Week Interview: Pat Etcheberry on Martina Hingis
12/06/2005

Pat Etcheberry: I was on court early this morning before talking to you training a couple people in the morning. Then I am booked from noon to 7:30 p.m. working with Mardy Fish, Alex Kuznetsov, Brendan Evans and Karolina Sprem. In my job, it's good to be busy, especially this time of year.

Tennis Week: Speaking of Mardy Fish, we saw him get to the gold medal match in the 2004 Olympics, take a lead and then lose it. It seemed he was on the verge of a breakthrough, but he's had some injuries, his fitness was questionable and now his ranking is at 225 after a high of number 17 in 2004. I'm sure he sees the success of his friends, Blake and Ginepri, and that must inspire him, but how is his fitness now and can he bounce back in 2006?

Pat Etcheberry: I I believe he can and I think he will. I think the thing with Mardy is his attitude and training in general is becoming more professional. Really it is 100 percent different than it was before. I think when he lost the final of the Olympics and then had injuries and a tough year it really motivated him and he's finally got himself in shape to the point where when people walk by the court and they don't even recognize him. And before he wasn't the most fit player and he knows that hurt his development. He started training and now he has been dedicated. I don't care what day of the year it is, he is ready to work out and now he has to go out and do as James Blake did and prove it on the court. But even some of our players here try to train with Mardy and some can't keep up and they've told me "Wow, he is a changed man." So he has been dedicated to his training and now he has to do it on the court.

Shall we resurrect this thread in hopes of Mardy going back where he belongs? The best thing about his qualifying and winning a match in miami is that he didn't lose any points, so he's up 4 spots to 261.... but the good news is that he has one match win the whole entire rest of the year so every single match he wins from here on out is points points points :)
