Interview with Alex Corretja after the match. I transcribed this from Austrian TV coverage.

INT: Congratulations, Alex. It was so impressive this year. Do you have an explanation?

AC: Well, I think I played one of my best tournaments here and also in Gstaad two weeks ago. It gave me a lot of confidence to come here in Kitzbuhl and I really played unbelievable. I beat three of teh top players in the world on clay pretty easy. Pretty amazing, I think I played unbelievably good tennis, pretty aggressive, and that's amazing for me.

INT: Why was it so clear today? What do you think?

AC: Well, I think I was doing more things with the ball, I was moving more angles, I was serving better, I was coming to the net more than him. Even in the first set, I lost my serve three times or something. I stayed focued because I realised that I could break him many times, cause he didn't serve too well either, so...

INT: Must have been like a dream, not even playing one tiebreak, not dropping a set... What do you say?

AC: Yeah, it's a dream come true, I mean imagine... I won in Gstaad too without dropping a set and now I come here, I didn't drop a set yet. I hope next time I drop a set I'm not gonna break the raquet, you know, because I'm gonna be upset, thinking how is it possible. So I gotta keep my feet on the ground and really understand that tennis is really hard these days and I have to keep working to keep my level.

INT: You have to play the doubles still. Is this a problem for you?

AC: Well, right now I feel like... of course I'm a little tired, but I have a lot of respect for Arnold, and I'm gonna try my best, I'm gonna try to win. Of course, I feel unbelievable on the court, so I'm gonna try to play one good match to see if I could get another trophy.

INT: Thank you very much and enjoy your celebration.

Thanks a lot Layla for posting and translating the interview.

Thanks Layla for the translating interview :)

07-28-2002, 11:56 AM
Ahheeem. :o You're welcome, but I didn't actually translate the interview, I just listened to the tape and wrote it down, mistakes and all. They spoke in English. Alex's English is much better than Juanqui's, I must say.

Oh, and Alex and Juan Carlos hugged when they shook hands :D and Juanqui didn't seem so upset about losing. This isn't Roland Garros, after all. ;)
