Interesting that Monaco seems to be an "alternate" for both Vienna and Stockholm in the same week  Obviously a man of many talents who can be in two places at the same time ;)

they often list themselves as an alternate for more than one tournament in the same week to give them more options

Fair enough - and thanks for that info. Must admit I rarely bother to look that closely at alternate lists, but I do like Juan and I'd like to see him play more often, so I was just wondering which of these tournaments he would choose.

I like Juan too. I was  when he and Verdasco didn't sign up to play Cincy qualies, so I've never gotten to see him play live in person.

I'd be willing to bet that Monaco will play here. He'll get direct entry for sure when the SE spots clear, if not before, since he's first on the Alt list. He's 2nd at Stockholm, so he could go there too. Does one offer more points or money than the other? Perhaps a court surface that he prefers?

Two wild cards will go to Koubek and Marach, the third is reserved for a "highly interesting player" (quote from official tourney website) - are they still hoping for Hewitt? ;)

If the "highly interesting" one doesn't show up, the third WC will also go to an Austrian.

Nadal's presence in Vienna is very doubtful due to the huge accumulated tiredness during the season ( He finished Davis cup tie physically destroyed , in fact his coach has admitted that if the two first sets against Seppi had been tougher maybe Nadal hadn't won that match because in the third and fourth set was extremly exhausted.

Now, Nadal is now in a period of rest and recovery and it seems there are a lot of chances that he pulls out of Vienna, but his presence isn't ruled out yet.

Juan doesn't really like indoor hard courts at all - he primarily prefers the clay - but he is trying to learn and improve on other surfaces, so I don't think he would have much preference - though I believe Vienna has a slightly higher prize money (not sure about that though). If he does choose Vienna, it may be because more of his fellow Argentines are appearing here, and they generally do tend to stick together for dinner, socialising etc - also Nadal (if he plays), as he is one of Juan's best friends on the circuit.

For the non-German speakers: The tournament director says that one WC might be reserved for a player who already won once in Vienna. Who could this be? Among recent winners only Henman and Rusedski come to my mind, unless we are up for a miracle ;) .

I really feel Henman might ask for a WC.
Despite withdrawing from Tokyo this week, he did say that his back and general fitness is improving. He says he's about 85% fit and he's nearly ready to play matches again.

Think you're probably right - and that would be great. Poor Tim has had a rough year and he loves Vienna - good luck to him.

Why not Mark Phillippoussis? Many tournaments are wasting WC with Flip, so Vienna could do the same. If he gets Mello, he may break his bad sequence and everyone would be happy!

Are you going to Vienna?
Rafa: If I knew, I'd tell you...On this moment it's more a no than a yes...but who knows, I'm not sure yet. I mean I want to go but...I need a little more rest and training so I don't know. Maybe the day comes and I say, hey I wanna go, but maybe I say, well I want to train more for Madrid because I want to do really well there this year, and Madrid is my number 1 priority...

Henman's priorities for next week: -

1. Pack his bags, head for the airport, get on a flight bound for Vienna, and touch down in Vienna

2. Make it to a practise court and complete training.

3. Get up the morning of his R1 match and not feel any pain.

4. Take part in his R1 match.

5. WIN!!!

On a serious note though...please play Vienna Tim...I don't like where you're ranking is heading :scared:

What does this meaan?? jajaja
