España vs. Argentina

07-19-2003, 05:21 PM
Who will win?

Spain is very strong
Argentina has enough great players to make 2 or 3 competitive teams
Spain plays at home
Gaudio has lost only 1 match (Kafelnikov, who saved 2 match points)
Spain..... plays at home
Coria is unbeatable now
Spain..... er, well they play at home
Argentina is back to the times of Vilas and Clerc
Spain..... will have the cheering of the people
Argentina will have a lot of people there too.

07-20-2003, 05:15 AM
this tie is going to be fantastic :D ...everyone that gets to see this, consider yourselves very very lucky and feel sorry for the poor poor people who are stuck with aus vs switzerland :retard:  !!!

couldnt pick a winner...may the best team win and hope to see them kick australia in december  :)

07-26-2003, 05:10 PM
Argentina will win :)

The team may be:

But the only one who plays doubles is Nalbandian, so Lucas Arnold will go too.
I hope David will play because Gaudio always plays (and always wins) and Coria is in his best moment.

07-28-2003, 09:16 PM
I think that home advantage can go a long way to help a team to victory in Davis Cup, but Argentina are the strongest team by far at the moment. Moya, Costa and Corretja are not at their best these days, and, as Catriel says, there will be a lot of support there for Argentina! There will certainly be a big group of us from England going over to support them - I am counting the days and can hardly wait - it should be the most AMAZING atmosphere! And what about Mariano Zabaleta for the team - he has been playing great recently, winning Bastad and a semi-finalist in Kitzbuehel, - he's a pretty good doubles player too!
What does anyone else think?

08-01-2003, 02:55 AM
don't forget ferrero for spain

08-07-2003, 09:32 PM
Sky mentioned during their Montreal ATP masters coverage a couple of days ago, that all of the Spain V Argentina match will be televised live here in the UK. I think it will be a very exciting tie, with Argentina winning it.

08-18-2003, 04:42 PM
A friend has just called me to say that they have announced the Argentine team, and it will be Coria, Gaudio, Nalbandian and Calleri.... Can anyone tell me if this is actually official or not?

08-20-2003, 12:37 AM
Spain vs Argentina will be on in the UK?!!!! OMG are you sure??? coz i was really sad coz i'll be on holidays in england during DC and thought i'd completely miss it!! Is Sky pay tv?

08-20-2003, 05:46 PM
Hi Esther, - yes Sky TV is a satellite channel (pay TV). If you are staying in a Hotel, then the chances are you will have access to it anyway as most decent Hotels have it installed as standard. If you are with friends then it would depend whether they have it set up or not, - often the tennis is actually shown on a separate Digital Sky Channel called Sky Sports Extra (Channel 404) - hope that helps - whereabouts in England are you going?

08-20-2003, 11:28 PM
rosie- no i'm staying with relatives and they live like...3 hours from London?!!! i forget which part they live in exactly lol but i'm goign to ask them if they have that channel but i seriously doubt it. Shame because we're going to stay in London for a few days as well in a hotel but i dont think i'll be in london for that DC weekend. thanks for your help ..i'll get back to you and hope for me that they do have the channel!! but i'm not getting my hopes up...if i was in melbourne i wouldnt see it neway so yeah *shrugs*

08-22-2003, 07:34 AM
yeah doesn't look ilke i will end up seeing it...oh well.
i hope someone who gets to see it will be nice enough to do a few match reports? :) ;)

08-22-2003, 12:33 PM
OK Esther, - I promise I will file some match reports when I get back from Malaga :) I might even post some photos if I take any that are good enough(!), but I get VERY nervous when I watch Guillermo play so my hands will probably be skaking too much to hold the camera straight!

08-23-2003, 11:43 AM
oh thanks Rosie!!! Actually forgot for a second that you were actually GOING...will suck that i miss this DC tie...i would have only followed it on the net and stuff but yeah hopefully it will be a weekend for everyone that gets to see it!! :)

are you going for the whole 3 days rosie? thanks in advance for the match reports :) :)

08-23-2003, 01:49 PM
Yes, I'm going for the whole 3 days Esther, - we bought our tickets absolutely ages ago! It should be a wonderful atmosphere and a great experience, - we will have to make a LOT of noise though, because we Argentina fans are going to be badly outnumbered!

08-24-2003, 05:42 AM
lucky lucky girl rosie!! No doubt, it'll definately be a great experience and looks like it will be a very high quality tie...yeah make all the noise you can for guillermo and the rest of the argies!! :) what is it...26 days away? something like that :)

08-24-2003, 11:16 AM
Yes, you're right Esther, - it start in 26 days time - not that I'm counting the days or anything! :D Just can't wait to see my Guillermo again(!), - I was in Stuttgart when he won the Final there, and although that was only last month it feels like an age away - guess that's just because I'm totally crazy about him, but at least I admit it......!

08-25-2003, 02:38 AM
hehe nothing wrong with being in love with guillermo...isn't a hard thing to do...:P ok thanks again for the match reports and hope you have a great time seeing coria :)

Coria sufre una lesión en el muslo izquierdo. También está lesionado David Nalbandian, cuya participación contra España en Málaga no está asegurada.

09-11-2003, 07:46 PM
Nalbandian joins Coria on sideline

September 11, 2003
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- U.S. Open semifinalist David Nalbandian withdrew from Argentina's Davis Cup semifinal against Spain because of a wrist injury Thursday.

Guillermo Coria, ranked fifth in the world, pulled out of Argentina's team Wednesday because of a leg injury.

The No. 9-ranked Nalbandian hurt his left wrist during his five-set loss to eventual champion Andy Roddick in the U.S. Open's final four Saturday.

Nalbandian, the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2002, won the first two sets against Roddick and had a match point in the third.

No replacement was immediately announced for Nalbandian. No. 25-ranked Mariano Zabaleta will replace Coria.

Spain will be led by No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, former No. 1 Carlos Moya and 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa.

Switzerland is at Australia in the other semifinal.

09-12-2003, 05:16 AM
To bad for Argentinia, but good for Spain! Now they are surely the favorites, they can win this meeting, they must win this meeting now!!!!

09-12-2003, 11:13 AM
would have been a better tie if both teams were at their best but oh well...shows how good the argentinean team is to be able to have injured their 2 best players but be still able to pull of a team of Gaudio, Zabeleta and Calleri...

neway may the best team win...

09-12-2003, 03:41 PM
poor argentina!!! but lucky they have a good chance to win! :D and THEY MUST win!

you are the best, guys!

ps: does anyone know if french channel will show the DC's semi?

09-13-2003, 06:38 AM
I do hope some french channel would show this meeting, but haven't find any information about that

09-14-2003, 01:44 PM
I think the withdrawals of Coria and Nalbandian pretty much seals the fate of this DC tie.

09-15-2003, 04:01 PM
noooooo  french channel'll show us the semi between Australia and switzerland
i wanted to see this semi ( SPAIN/argentina) so much! :fiery:

09-15-2003, 06:03 PM
maybe when the final will be spain- swiss they will show this meeting??? But both teams have to win their semis first!!!

Chloe le Bopper
09-16-2003, 02:14 AM
I think that Gaudio and Zab are better than most people are giving them credit for :p Wether they can do it with a crowd completely against them, is another thing...

09-16-2003, 05:38 PM
maybe when the final will be spain- swiss they will show this meeting??? But both teams have to win their semis first!!!

Yep i hope so...but i think they have to show us the DC's final.
and swiss and spain Will reach the final :) ( I REALLY Hope! )

Chloe le Bopper
09-17-2003, 01:45 AM
grrr Go Gaudio and Zab! Make me look really good for backing you this whole time;)

09-17-2003, 02:13 AM

and swiss and spain Will reach the final :) ( I REALLY Hope! )

I hope so too Corredian!

VAMOS ESPANA [Alex!! Juanqui!! Albert!! Carlos!!]

If ESP and SUI reach the finals, Becca and I can fight it out!! ;) or maybe she won't care anymore without her Nalby! ;)

09-17-2003, 08:07 AM
¡España Toda la vida!
¡¡¡¡¡vamos Carlitos, Beto, Álex, JCF!!!!! ¡¡¡¡A por la segunda!!!! :bounce: :bounce:

09-18-2003, 06:56 AM
I want Spain to win but I think more than my wish to see JCF, Moya, Alex and everyone in the team in the DC finals is to watch the full line up of these two squads take on each other. I've been waiting for this quality tie for months! So sad for Coria and Nalbandian. :(
But what the heck, I hope Gaudio, Zabaleta and co can make this semi very exciting!
No, I'm not swaying to the other side but it's just me...a sucker for underdogs! :p :o

09-19-2003, 10:41 AM

09-19-2003, 03:47 PM
2-0 for the Spanish Armada! :woohoo:
Wow, that was some spanking from El Mosquito!
It was too bad for Zab. Carlos, you were making me swear in frustration in the early sets!

09-19-2003, 03:55 PM
who saw the match on tele? In the last three sets, was moya playing better,or has he won because zabaleta couldn't play well anymore?

09-20-2003, 03:34 AM
i saw it Claudine
and for sure Carlos won it cos Zabaleta couldn't move much after 2-2 in 3rd

Carlos played a little better but we'll never know if he could have turned it around without Zab getting hurt.

09-20-2003, 09:34 AM

09-20-2003, 03:17 PM
I'm so happy that the doubles team delivered. I was getting afraid that the Argies would be skunked. So difficult to go to Spain and win. The Spaniards are really tough at home.

Go Blue and White! :)

09-20-2003, 03:37 PM

Choking Monica vs. "I have no confidence" Moya

Calleri wins second set 7-5

09-21-2003, 11:44 AM
From Eurosport :
13:41 Calleri is unstoppable in these final games of the second set!! He is hitting magical shots and Ferrero can't believe his eyes 30-0....... Another huge point at the net with great anticipation by both sides but this time Ferrero gets lucky as Calleri's final volley stays at the net 30-15..... and another stunning ground stroke for set point 40-15......and he does it, Ferrero's shot unfortunately stay at the net. The Argentinean fans get up on their feet and celebrate a two set to love lead over Spain!!!!

13:35 MALAGA: Calleri is on fire and makes his move to break Ferrero once more to serve for the set.

09-21-2003, 12:05 PM
Calleri *3-0

14:00 MALAGA: Ferrero is playing by the book with solid shots but Calleri is just magical today, there's no other explanation!!! Calleri makes yet another break with huge passing shots!!!

There are no words to describe the magistry of Calleri :worship:

09-21-2003, 12:27 PM
Wow Calleri really made the most of his opportunity to play the singles! This is surprising though i know Calleri is a good clay courter, i wouldnt expect him to beat Ferrero this easily!
This tie is really getting interesting now, i think if Gaudio's head doesnt explode he should beat Moya, the way Carlos is playing. But chances are Gastons head will explode first

09-21-2003, 12:49 PM

Anyone know the Gaudio-Moya head2head?

Vamos muchachos!

09-21-2003, 01:22 PM

Anyone know the Gaudio-Moya head2head?

Gaston still can't get enough of these bagels, heading for another one

Moya *4-0

Moya 4-0

09-21-2003, 01:26 PM
It seems like Gaudio has decided not to win a game for the whole tie.
Imagine if Coria and Nalbandian had played!

09-21-2003, 01:30 PM
NOPE, no bagel this time, maybe a breadstick for a change ?

Moya *5-1

09-21-2003, 01:35 PM
Gaudio is the player whos been bagelled the most on tour
Good thing he avoided one here for once.
Come on Gaston!

09-21-2003, 01:56 PM
Moya 6-1 *3-2

Augie!!!!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

What a gallant effort in a losing cause! It makes me so happy for the Argies. Nearly single handedly, he has covered Argentina with honor.

Moya leads 6-1 6-4 *1-0

09-21-2003, 02:33 PM
I have no faith in Gaudio to win this. I'm thinking of calling him GiGi --- But that might be sexist. ;)

Anyway, I hope Gaston puts egg all over my face. :)

09-21-2003, 03:00 PM
Carlos 6-1 6-4 *5-2 :D

Carlos 1st serve pts won 97% 30/31

09-21-2003, 03:03 PM
Carlos wasn't Careless Moya today :woohoo:
awesome performance :D :)

6-1 6-4 6-2
he served it out to love with 4 2nd serves :rolls:

09-21-2003, 03:05 PM
Moya wins 6-1 6-4 6-2 :(

09-21-2003, 03:06 PM
And España goes to the final :) Moyà beats Gastón 6-1 6-4 6-2

A perfect end, Calleri defeated Ferrero on straight sets to put some drama but Carlitos Moyà, the one who couldn't play that final against Australia, today is the real hero for Spain winning his 2 matches :worship:
Strange series with all those injuries and with that unexpected victory by Callleri over Ferrero, but at the end the best team goes on. :)
Now Australia (surely on grass) will be another story, maybe is time to call Chano López. ;) well, there is enough time to think about it.

09-21-2003, 04:07 PM
and the winner is:

Well done guys! i wih you the best of luck against australia( on grass i guess?) you'll need it and so even if it's gonna be difficult i still believe in YOU!!!!!

:hearts: OLE :hearts:

Pheuw it was close.....
Now I hope they choose Nadal, Feli, Tommy, Moyà and Ferrero for the final, but I doubt they can beatthe Aussies who will choose grass :(

Really sad about Argentina losing especially after such a brilliant effort from Agustin, - they would have won for sure if David had been fit. Still, never mind - better luck next year and now I wish all good luck to Spain against Australia although it will be hard for them on a grass court.

Don't say things like "they would have won if Coria and Nalbandian had come", or "if Zabaleta would have not got injured". Tennis is a sport and this means that you never know who would win anything until they play. As those possiblities didn't happen, you don't know who would have won...

Well OK yes, - tennis is a sport and no one knows for sure who is going to win anything, - but surely it is not a crime to have an opinion and the right to express it freely? You only have to look at the Stats to see that Coria and Nalbandian are two of the top two players in the world this year (not just in Argentina), so I personally firmly believe that if they had been in the Team their presence, talent and experience could well have made a difference. Whether it would or not of course, we will never know now.
