Davis Love looks to be in good position to win his second Major, but knowing him he'll come up short once again. Not a good start for Ernie Els, the defending champ. Woods started off with a triple bogey on the first hole, but was able to finish the day at +2. And when's David Duval gonna break this slump?

Tempers and scores rise with the wind
17-Jul-2003 19:07(BST)

The target score of 68, set by virtually unknown South African Hennie Otto early in the first round of The Open Championship, remained unbeaten throughout a day of changing weather and fluctuating fortunes at Royal St George's. Only five players completed rounds under par.

Past champions Tom Watson and Greg Norman launched strong bids but pre-championship favourite Tiger Woods spent the day trying to keep himself in contention after losing his opening tee shot in the dense right rough. "The fore-caddies were telling us where the ball was, but we couldn't find it," said Woods. "That was frustrating." That shot led to a seven and he went into damage limitation mode, fighting many wayward tee shots to restrain his score to a two-over 73. Summing up his round he said: "I shot one-under-par over the last 17 holes and I've kept myself in the tournament."

Otto, playing in his first Open Championship, felt that the elements were against him when he arrived for his 6.30am tee time. Forecasters had been predicting that the bad weather would not arrive until the afternoon, but the wind was freshening and rain came in heavy squalls. Yet as the day progressed the rain stayed away and the winds became stronger, making it increasingly difficult to hold the ball on fairways and greens. The benefit of an early start time was obvious from the scoreboard. Of the five players with under-par scores, four were on the course before nine o'clock and three were in play by 7.36am.

Even the power and experience of defending champion Ernie Els could not prevent him scattering four shots on the way to an outward 40 and three more on the way home for a seven-over 78. He was having a terrible day on the greens, misjudging many long putts and unable to convert anything from short range.

Norman and Otto both reached four under, but neither could hold that score together to the end. Norman finished the day sharing second place with 1992 USPGA champion Davis Love III whose only dropped shot came at the final hole.

Norman commented: "I don't think there was an easy shot out there today. The golf course was baring her teeth all the way round." Of his punched four-iron to six inches for an eagle at the fourth hole he said: "I had 194 yards to that hole and I had basically four different ways of playing it. I remembered playing it in '93, a little bump-and-run. It worked then and it worked today. "

Watson, who dropped shots at the last two holes for a level par round of 71, said: "I finished ugly, but 17 and 18 are very difficult driving holes. It turned a very enjoyable round into an average round. I left the course with a bad taste in my mouth, but it's happened to me before and it will happen again. This golf course has always been a struggle for me."

Another Open first-timer who took advantage of the easier conditions of the early morning was SK Ho of Korea. A golfer since the age of 10, he turned pro in 1995 and has had victories on the Asian and Japan PGA Tours. He mixed four dropped shots and five birdies in an up-and-down round of 70 to claim a share of fourth place with Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden.

Jacobson was the man with the best scoring record of the day. Playing when the conditions had seriously deteriorated, with winds gusting to 35 miles an hour, he birdied the fourth and every other hole was completed in strict par. "I didn't quite expect that as the wind picked up," he said. "I got away without going in the fairway bunkers and scrambled round the greens very well, which I felt would be one of the most important things. It is virtually impossible to stop the ball on some greens and you need an up-and-down for your par. I did very well on that bit."

Colin Montgomerie was forced to pull out after seven holes after injuring his right wrist in a fall at his hotel.

No, this isn't the entire field. I just posted the top 35. Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, and David Duval are all +4 or worse.

Anyway, good luck to Davis Love, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia in the 2nd round tomorrow! :)

Duval is probably my favorite player...he needs to pick it up

First of all, go Davis Love! :bounce: Keep it going with this great form and you'll be the 2003 British Open Champion! Garcia looked good today, although a bit shaky on the greens, and he's obviously got a great shot to win his first Major here. Els also looked much better today. And   David Duval. His drop to #87 in the rankings is improbable and disappointing. And just think that two years ago he won this Major, and now he's missing the cut by 11 strokes! Well, with his talent, strength, and youth I expect to see Duval return to the top where he belongs. It's all mental.

Wow, this is so wide open. So many contenders for the title tomorrow, and I would love to see either Davis Love, who dropped to +2 today before getting back to par with an eagle on the 14th, or Sergio Garcia, who unfortunately bogeyed on the last hole in today's round, lifting the trophy. :) Can't forget about Woods or Singh, though, or the current leader Bjorn.

Congrats to Ohio boy Ben Curtis, the 2003 British Open Champion!

http://picsrv.opengolf.com/fif=/open/60000773.fpx&obj=iip,1.0&wid=220&cvt=jpeg

His first start in a Major and now he's a champion. This is also his first top ten finish in a PGA event. But got to give him credit for out-playing experienced golfers like Woods, Love, and Singh. What a choke from Bjorn, though, huh? He had a three stroke lead over Curtis going into the last three holes, but disaster struck for him on the 16th when he double-bogeyed. It took him 3 shots to get out of the bunker, it just kept rolling back in! And then he bogeyed the 17th as well to fall a stroke behind Curtis, who was already back in the clubhouse, and couldn't come up with the magic on the 18th. I felt so sad for Bjorn afterwards when they showed him with his daughter, obviously disappointed.

And gee, couldn't Curtis and his fiancee get a frickin room instead of making out in front of the cameras?! :D

Bizarre :o

He seems like a good guy though :)
