Wow, the cut was #225 (it was something like 330 last year). Everybody I like is in the qualies, it seems :)

..and here is the tournament web site:

http://www.tennischallenger.com/

How did they get such a nice website URL? .. I guess they were among the first to set up a challenger website .. This has always been a well-conducted challenger for many years, I am told.

Ivo with 19 Aces

It was a tough day for Americans at the Binghamton Challenger. Jack Brasington started the trend, losing to Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-4,6-3. Jack got down early, but fought back from 1-4 to tie it at 4 and was serving. It looked like he might do the same thing as Monday (when he trailed 5-1 against Vahaly in the 1st, and came back to win the match). But Lu then broke serve to go up 5-4 and then closed out the first set and continued to break to a 3-0 lead in the second. At 4-2, Brasington had Lu at Love-30 and looked to be making another attempt at a comeback, but it sizzled with Lu holding and kept on serve the rest of the match. Looked like that Love-30 was the opportunity and he couldn't capitalize. Jack didn't look like he did the other night, he was seeing the trainer later in the day... wonder if he wasn't 100%.

Brian Baker had a tight one against Ivo Karlovic, as expected. It was a match with easy serving on both ends, Karlovic serving 19 aces. Karlovic broke at 3-3 to go up 4-3 in the 1st. At 3-5, Baker broke back and held to tie it up at 5-5. The second set remained on serve through to the tie break and Ivo showed that he had a slight advantage with his booming serve. A bummer to see Baker go out, he does look like he'll be doing pretty well and would be nice to say he had a great start right here in Binghamton. Very poised and was continually able to dig out of any hole he might get on his own serve and realized the very few opportunities in Ivo's serve. He even mixed it up pretty well with some serve and volleying. He took Ivo to tie breaks, gotta be happy. All he needed was a little hole, but Ivo didn't give it to him today. So the big Wimbledon star returns to the Quarterfinals, where he left off last year.

Nicolas Thomann of France, the top remaining seed, beat Rik De Voest of South Africa, 6-2,7-5. The second set stayed close and got tight in the last game, at 6-5, with Thomann having 4 deuces before he could close it out.

Danai Udomchoke beat Paul Baccanello, 7-5, 7-6(2) in one of 2 first round matches postponed from yesterday. Danai came back in both sets, from 2-4 in the 1st and 2-5 in the 2nd. With good reason, Paul was pretty upset with himself.

Arvind Parmar, who won a Challenger last week in Denver, beat Jan Vacek, 6-4,6-3 in his first round match. Do you give the advantage to the guy who won the Challenger last week? What was Jan talking to the chair umpire about? He talked quite a bit, pretty quiet about it to... was it the ball kids?

Jeff Salzenstein split sets with Florent Serra before play was suspended at 7:10p due to darkness ... huh? Guess they didn't want to start a set and not be able to finish it. Jeff was having a hard time with the first serve, and in the 9th game Jeff had 4 first serve faults (out of 5 points) to get broken and settle the first set, 6-3. In the 2nd set, Jeff's first serve % was 56, with it being 41% in the first 3 service games. In the tiebreak, Jeff's percentage was 50%, but he managed to come up big at the end with his other weapons. On at 8-9, Jeff had a drop volley that Serra couldn't get to, to even it 9-9. At 9-10, Jeff said "Let's see if I can get a 1st serve" and he did to get to 10-10, then Serra hit 2 errors to close out the breaker, 12-10. This match will resume at 2pm tomorrow. When asked if he would have preferred to play on in the evening, "I would have played, but it doesn't matter… I go with the flow."

Almost forgot Ace with Pace, Andrew Colombo won the fastest serve coming in at 122 and Andy Ram was 2nd fastest at 119. Marcelo Amador won the aces category with 3 out of 3 and Travis Rettenmaier was 2nd with 2 out of 3.

Good stuff tomorrow... Fleishman-Benneteau is the match of the day. Thursday already.

Karlovic serves up 29 aces

Schedule for Saturday

11:00 Erlich/Ram vs Ayala/Coupe
12:30 Parmar vs Thomann
2:00 Karlovic vs Benneteau

Highlights-

Ivo Karlovic served up 29 aces en route to beating Yen-Hsun Lu, 3-6,7-6,6-4 to make it to the semifinals. Ivo served 2 double faults in the 8th game for Lu to break and then hold serve to close out the 1st set. Lu appeared to start picking up Karlovic's serve in the 2nd and forced it to a tie breaker, with no breaks of serve in the 2nd. In the 3rd set, 5th game, Lu faulted 3 of 5 first serves and Karlovic broke. Karlovic served 8 straight aces to win the 8th game and the final 10th game, not allowing Lu any points in Karlovic's last 2 service games.

-Arvind Parmar continues toward his 2nd straight Challenger without losing a set here in Binghamton. Parmar beat Andy Ram, who also didn't drop any sets coming into the match (only dropped 10 games in 4 sets up until today), 6-2,7-6(7).
-Nicolas Thomann beat Florent Serra, 7-6(6), 6-2. Thomann broke to open up the match and held for a 2-0 lead. Serra then won the next 3. Thomann had 2 break points in the 11th game (at 5 all), but couldn't convert. In the tie break, Serra had a 5-3 lead and Serra served an ace. That ace Thomann had to grab with his hand to prevent getting hit in the shoulder because he guessed wrong... didn't anticipate that one correctly. Thomann then won the next on a clean winner. Then on a deep 2nd serve that Serra couldn't get back in play and that Serra questioned, Thomann took the lead for good. He closed it out with 4 straight errors from Serra. When asked if he felt in control at that point, he replied with a definite "yes". Thomann took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd, then a 5-2 lead. Thomann closed it out breaking Serra for 6-2.

-Zack Fleishman, the last American in the singles draw, lost to Julien Benneteau in the continuation of his match. He was up 4-2 in the 3rd at the resumption today. In the opening game, Zack had a break point on Julien's serve, but couldn't convert. Benneteau broke and then held to take a 5-4 lead. Fleishmen then held, at love, to even it at 5. In the tie break, Julien stepped up his serve producing an ace and forcing 3 errors on the return of serve with 6 straight points after Zack had a 2-1 lead. The score finished 7-6(2), 6-4,7-6(2). In retrospect... really a bummer that the match was postponed, considering Ivo played tonight until 7:30, and Zack clearly had it all pointing his way on Thursday night. Zack was pretty upset, understandably... he had a break point starting out today. If he had converted it would have been 5-2 on his serve. Really, if you had to pick one point that was key... that was it. Fleishman walked straight from the court to his car and drove off, pretty quickly. He later said he can understand why they called it the night before, but still would have been nice to finish it off. He felt the quality of tennis was better the night before, and that is pretty accurate.

-Benneteau picked up his play in the 2nd match for him on the day and beat Danai Udomchoke, 6-3,6-2. Going to make his match with Ivo more interesting. Benneteau could offset the bombs with a little more.

There was a nice party afterwards, good music and atmosphere. Karlovic practiced right after the match, as if he didn't have enough in the 3 sets... although he definitely is getting alot of free points. He practiced alot of short ball hitting. Thomann was out there too, with Elseneer (thought he was injured?).

Semis Saturday... interesting. There was a guarantee from fans tonight that Thomann would win. It is statistically pretty tough to do what Parmar is attempting. Although, Jeff Salzenstein did it. Gotta think Benneteau is capable of putting a little more pressure on the Croation bomber too. Regardless, it'll be great stuff.
