OK so here is my favorite:

One Night in Paris - featuring Paris Hilton & Rick Salomon. I think the acting is great but lots of it is real anyway :yeah:

I was in this industry for 3 years so I know good quality

You mean the porn industry?

Just watched "mysterious skin" It is about two children who get abused as children, and how their life progresses. One of them is a rent boy, and the other is convinced he was abducted by aliens (they then discover each other later on in life).

Excellent movie, best I have probably seen this year (well for sure the best I have seen for many months). I really wanted to see it at my local picturehouse and missed it, and also missed at the cinema in london. But I finally got it yesterday and well worth it. Some very uncomfortable scenes, and it is quite disturbing.

Although one scene is probably the most uncomfortable scene I have ever seen, I think it was necessary and not pointless like many of the **** scenes. So be warned, if you arent into that films like irreversible, ichi the killer etc you may want to stay clear. It is more disturbing than the films above, due to the fact it is about children. PS It contains many homosexual scenes, so if you are one of those homophobes its also best to stay clear.

Anyway, has to go into my top 10-15 film list.

If you really want one movie that drives you insane and will have to be watched at leasy 8 times until you finally get it, watch Donnie Darko.

There are many movies I like that have already been mentioned, I'll point out some that weren't.

Y tu mamá también
Dirty Dancing (Havana Nights)
The Diary of Bridget Jones (you gotta love it. )
Saw I and II.

I am sure I have others, but I can't remember right now.
I watched "Y tu mama tambien" for the first time two weeks ago and loved it immediately! :yeah:

Bridget Jones is a fun movie (but the books are better).

Other movies worth watching:
The Shawshank Redemption
8 Femmes (hilarious French movie)
The last supper
21 Grams wasn't bad but I was very tired at the time that I watched it and the plot is not chronological so I was confused the first 30 minutes of the movie.
Memento is also very good.
My favourite girlie movie is "Legends of the fall" :hearts:

I also watched the 1975 cult movie "Salo, or the 120 days of Sodom" , just for the sake of it. Anyone else see that? :tape: (It's not for sensitive souls)

Y tu mama tambien - Is very good, although I prefer gael's other films. Especially Amores perros.

As for salo, I have read alot about that film and about the director who made the film and got killed. I have considered downloading it, but wasnt sure if I wanted to. Is it really that bad? I am not too bothered about watching the shit eating  thats more disgusting than disturbing, but is the torture and **** uncomfortable to watch? Seen films like cannibal holocaust, irreversible, ichi the killer etc? How would you compare to those?

Amores Perros rocked! (and GGB too. I also saw La mala educación.)

The sex part wasn't bad at all (I'm sure people were shocked 30 years ago though, because of the frontal nudity) but I found the shit eating part quite disturbing. :o The torture was pretty intense but again, not something I haven't seen in violent films before.

I think the creepiness of the movie isn't really due to the images itself (I've seen more violent movies with better special effects ;) ) but the overall cold, immoral tone of the movie. There was definitely something weird about it.

I haven't seen cannibal holocaust, Irreversible or Ichi the killer.
But now I must, of course. :p

I will try downloading that then, I recently got into a new torrent site which caters for all films non mainstream! I downloaded a bunch of brazillian, and argentine films :D I watched tsotsi last night (south african film which won an oscar) and it was quite good. I also going to watch a morrocan film tonight; Ali Zaoua, prince de la rue AKA Ali Zoua: Prince of the Streets. Its nice to find those kind of films without having to buy from the country that made them  and paying a high price.

They have salo on there, so will download sometime.

Cannibal Holocaust, is it a movie in Spanish or Portuguese, by any chance..?

I remember my roommate watching a really violent movie with **** scenes (on some female tribe member in a jungle  ) during exam period. I guess we all have different ways to deal with the frustration. I politely refused to watch it with him.

Well it sounds like it, it is italian though (but in english I think). As are alot of the cannibal films! And seems alot of gore ones are from italy too. That film in all honesty is not that violent, and the **** scene is preety tame to many I have seen. I was expecting it to be quite uncomfortable to watch, but it wasnt at all. Its a good film though.

Well I guess salo will be a cakewalk if you failed to watch CH :D Because I am sure thats the film you mean.

:yeah:

I quite liked PI, I saw it on tv late on channel 4 about 18 months ago. It was a good film, and I didnt realise it was directed by the same person who directed "requiem for a dream". RFAD Has the best soundtrack I have ever heard, it fits the film perfectly too. I am gonna have to rewatch or get pi on dvd sometime, as I want to watch it again.

I havent watched hardly any american films in the recent past to be honest, and hardly any american films are in my favourite of films. Thats why I was so impressed with mysterious skin, usually those kind of films are made from a foreign director/country etc.

I am going to watch "kidulthood" later  its an english film, and our films are usually a joke and preety crap. But I saw the soundtrack and it seems great, and it seems something different so will give it a try. seems quite bad from http://imdb.com/title/tt0435680/

That's funny... I hit two first position, and definitely would give Godfather II as third, but just thought the poster is smart enough to go for the second as well :p

Plus some other category - Indiana Jones series, or "The Mummy" (funny)

There was a VERY COOL film by Mel Brooks - the version of Robin Hood, but I don't know the English title.

Shawshank is very good, but I have seen many better films. It shouldnt even be in the top 10 films. How it manages to get to 2nd is quite a joke. I mean carandiru is a better prison film so is the green mile, I also enjoyed midnight express, and probably blood in blood out too more than shawshank. And those listed are just prison films, not to mention the many other films that are far better than shawshank.

This (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=62232) is a very good thread started by Shotgun Blues some months ago, I searched and read it all just a couple of days ago, and will bump it (unless someone else does) when I have a proper time to answer, hee. I hope it helps you as well.

I haven't seen a whole lot movies that came out in 2005, but I made a TOP10 of them anyway:

1 - Brokeback Mountain
2 - Match Point
3 - The Squid and The Whale
4 - Mysterious Skin
5 - Pride & Prejudice
6 - Sin City
7 - The Constant Gardener
8 - Good Night, and Good Luck
9 - March of the Penguins
10 - Munich

I think for those of you who like critics lists (to analyze, love, hate or laugh at them), They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (http://www.theyshootpictures.com/index.htm) is a VERY good site with a very interesting list of "Most Acclaimed 21st Century Movies" (http://www.theyshootpictures.com/21stcentury_films1-50.htm) among others.

Cidade de Deus (City of God)- It's amazing, amazzingg. It's Brazilian, so if you don't speak Portuguese it requires you to read subtitles. I've watched it tons of times, and I pick up something new everytime. It's well worth it, don't let the subs discourage you. One of my favorites.

Fight Club- I enjoy this movie. Violence, seems to be a trend in my picks so far. I also enjoy Brad Pitt, perfect ab shot in this movie.

A Clockwork Orange- It's a classic, really clever, kind of gross, but it's great.

Legends of the Fall- Quaint essential romantic sob story. I've never cried so much during a movie.

Almost Famous- Great acting, great music, I love this movie.

American Beauty- Weird, funny, and twisted, my type of movie.

Others, are Mystic River, V for Vendetta, Crash, Hotel Rwanda, Snatch, Thelma & Louise.

Watched a nice greek film yesterday called "hardcore"

http://img422.imageshack.us/img422/9962/hardcore8eu.jpg

Two young women on the wrong side of both society and the law fall into a dangerous love affair in this stylish drama from Greece. Martha is a cynical 17-year-old drug addict who supports her habit by working as a prostitute for pimp Manos. Martha has resigned herself to a short and ugly life on the streets when she meets Nadia, a 16-year-old who has fallen into the street life and is also hooking for Manos. Martha and Nadia are rivals at first, especially when Nadia attracts the attentions of good-looking hustler Argyris, for whom Martha has long carried a torch. But in time, the two girls become close friends, and then Nadia takes their relationship to a new level by seducing Martha. Martha falls hard for Nadia, but Nadia takes a more opportunistic attitude toward their new romance, and refuses to break things off with Argyris, while Martha retaliates by becomes involved with Miltos, a close friend of Argyris.

The Pro
07-26-2006, 10:59 PM
Magnolia - The most epic, thoughtful, amazing drama I've ever seen. The music, acting, script, it's all perfect!

The Descent - The scariest horror film ever. And also the best. Bunch of girls go 'spelunking' underground. Tension ensues, they find out they're lost, ppl get hurt, then it gets even worse!

A Simple Plan - A quiet, clever thriller. It's somehow manages to be bittersweet and funny yet horribly brutual and tense at the same time. Not happy-clappy at all, but a very interesting watch, and food for thought. It also has Billy Bob Thornton, Bill Paxton and Bridget Fonda giving their best performances in the same movie.

Cube - Great b movie. 5 people trapped in a maze of cube shaped rooms filled with booby traps. You'l never see anything like it.

Run Lola Run - Girl runs for 25 minutes from 3 different perspectives. Stylish, philosophical, kinda european, very entertaining!

If you want to see a old 70's movie that still holds up pretty well today than check out the new DVD release of Sally Field's Sybil.

To this day it's still the chilliest tale about Child Abuse I have seen, but that is only part of the story as the abuse caused the character to come down with 16 multiple personalities.

The movie is based on a true story and Sybil to me is one of Field's greatest accomplishments even outside her Oscar winning films.

In many scenes you might think Sally is overacting, but in reality, she was shockingly brilliant in every physical scene.

And the late Martine Bartlett as the demented mother Hattie. Damnnnnnnnnnnn. Can't believe she never was nominated for any awards for that performance.

Joanne Woodard is great as the therapist that helped Sybil overcome her disorder, but Field and Bartlett definitely make the movie worthwhile sitting through.

Have got home from hospital, and can only lay in bed. So will be watching alot of films :) as I cannot do much else!

Anyway, some good ones to reccomend; (both very good ones!!)

Cidade-Baixa
http://www.cinemacafri.com/img/poster/grande/Cidade-Baixa.jpg

Lifelong friends Deco and Naldinho, who own a small steaming boat in Bahia, meet strip-dancer Karinna. Both men fall for her and their friendship is deeply shattered.

Had been trying to get hold of that film for a while, missed it at the local picturehouses a few times and never managed to see it.

Brazil :worship: so many good films are made by directors in this country!!

And a great documentary/film

Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids (2004)
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7567/brotehlj7.jpg

Admist the apparent growing prosperity of India, there is a dark underbelly of poverty of another side of the nation that is little known. This film is a chronicle of filmmakers Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman's efforts to show that world of Calcutta's red light district. To do that, they inspired a special group of children of the prostitutes of the area to photograph the most reluctant subjects of it. As the kids excel in their new found art, the filmmakers struggle to help them have a chance for a better life away from the miserable poverty that threatens to crush their dreams.

Same problem for about 4 years now, pilonidal sinus. Just an absces that appears above your butt and that was my 5th operation.

Probably about the worst position possible you could think of in terms of getting comfortable :haha: Speaking of films, I wanted to go to the cinema actually, but no chance

Sorry but the movie doesn't have a plot. The script wasn't too exciting or original to say the least. And it's not like you can say that the movie is not about excitement, that it's purpose is to expose the.. blah, blah 'evils of society'. In short, i was bored to death.

The plot was as thin as a thread. The love triangle... ahem. Was the movie about love? Was it about the lifestyle of many unfortunate people in Brazil? It was like the creators couldn't decide what they wanted to talk about and ended up with a very bad 'blend' (although the two themes didn't blend well at all).
The movie tried too hard to look like "Amores Perros". There's f*cking, loving, animal fighting, prostitution, robberies, murders, poverty just like in Amorres Perros, but it just doesn't fit (btw murder in both films is connected to animal battles and robberies in both films are connected to running away with one's lover. Suspicious.)

Sure it has fancy artsy camera movement, but the movie just doesn't have any substance or anything else to offer.

PS: No, i'm not a type of person who hates unusual, philosophical, art films. I just can't live without them, but this one feels like a fake.

No need to read into it so much and try to analyse the film, just the kind of film which is entertaining to watch without trying to do all that nonsense. I just took it at face value, and didnt try to disect it all (and I enjoyed it). Not exactly a deep film with alot of meaning. I would hardly call it an art film anyway, actually I wouldnt call it one at all; so it isnt a fake at all. I suppose its more of an thriller/action/drama

Although, I had a look at your favourite films in this thread and a lot of them are the brainless kind (not in a bad way, I often enjoy films like that too for entertainment and enjoyment), which you watch to be entertained. So I am a little confused.

Maybe you were expecting something a little different and expected an art film, or just something you didn't find interesting. It happens what ever way.

Just saw the New 007 (Casino Royale). David Craig was awsome, probably the best James Bond movie along with Golden eye and a few of the Sean Connery films.

I also saw Will Ferrels "Stranger than Fiction". This was Ferrel's best film hand's down. It was smart, funny and witty. It was quite werid though.

But watch them both, they were truly great movies.

I watched 21 grams yesterday, actually. It was very good indeed, but it did keep me confused for some time, I couldn't work out what happened first and what happened after. But linking everyone is definitely a challenge, I liked it a lot. Sean Penn is amazing.

Y tu mama tambien - Is very good, although I prefer gael's other films. Especially Amores perros.

I know, I think I liked Amores Perros better. Such an incredible movie, it reminded me a bit of 21 Grams, because of the parallel stories.

I think I should watch Mysterious Skin, everyone seems to recommend it and looks like my type of film, really. Disturbing.

Already watched the Notebook, as every girl in this world must've. :p

Carito, are you a fan of girly films? Or are you one of the ones who doesn't like them?

Well, I'm in between. I enjoy a chick flick every now and then, but if I'm in a thoughtful mood I'll go for a good drama movie.

But in all honesty, what girl can not love The Notebook? :p

Yesterday Olga recommended to watch The Dreamers, by Bertolucci. Pretty good film, entretaining, but the ending... well, unexpected and kind of left you wanting more. I got that feeling. Still a good movie. :)

Hmmmm its hard to say, because I am not sure what I have posted before (when I posted here) as I haven't seen many good films recently. But I will take a look and report back.

My focus has been away from films recently :D and on music mostly.

Ok hes back with the recent and long time discoveries, seeing as I haven't posted here for a while.

Dead Mans Shoes
http://www.bergen-filmklubb.no/images/Dead_Mans_Shoes.jpg

This was a nice surprise, its english (lol, I really don't like english films to be honest) but I sat down to watch this and loved it. Its about a guy whos mentally challenged brother is picked upon by a gang, and his revenge on that gang. The guy is totally menacing, I mean he looks so hard, its unreal. Sometimes it makes you laugh because of that, of how much he is fucking with them, and the balls he has.

Imdb says "A disaffected soldier (Considine) returns to his hometown to get even with the thugs who brutalized his mentally-challenged brother (Kebbell) years ago" - http://imdb.com/title/tt0419677/

Lila dit ça; Lila Says - French
http://www.taiwanfun.com/pics/movies/0604/lila_says_poster.jpg

imdb - Two inner-city teenagers engage in an obsessive, innocent flirtation fueled by Lila's sexually explicit overtures

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424237/

Lilja 4-ever - Swedish

"Lilja is 16 years old. Her only friend is the young boy Volodja. They live in Russia, fantasizing about a better life. One day, Lilja falls in love with Andrej. He is going to Sweden, and invites Lilja to come along and start a new life."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300140/

Other than that, I haven't really seen any "great ones" in the past few months.

So finaly he, his teacher and a couple students were leaving the plain and a couple minutes later the plain sais kaboem so they escaped the death but it was their destiny to die in the plain so the death will hunt them till they are death but the 17 year old guy sees always a vision right before a accident so he has to follow the vision and safe himself and his teacher and friends to survive very good movie and final destination 2 is the same movie only with a girl as caracter and other accidents

If I can venture an opinion: The Notebook - 2004, was about director Nick Cassavetes working {directing} his mother: Gena Rowlands. ...and about senility.

Of the occasions where I've seen a director 'direct' a parent, it has been an enjoyable film. ...and the only other one was a classic: Treasure of the Sierra Madre - 1948, with John Huston directing his father, Walter Huston.
.................
P.S.: Nick also directed Gena in Unhook the Stars - 1996, and in a lesser role in She's So Lovely - 1997

Man, I just watched "Network" last night on TCM. Wow! It came out in 1976 but is still so relevant today. Except for a few dated details (technology mostly) it could be about television and the world today, 30yrs later. I highly recomend it. :yeah:

Amorres Perros was not the first movie shot that way, so they copied someone else...Absolutely. Magnolia (1999) adopts a similar structure. But of course it goes further back than that. Robert Altman (Short Cuts, Nashville) was a master of it...and I'm sure he wasn't the first.

Nothing is new anymore in movie-land.

The plot is about a passionate music teacher who arrives at a correctional boarding school for boys and transforms their lives through music. The film stars Gérard Jugnot as Clément Mathieu the teacher, and Jean-Baptiste Maunier as Pierre Morhange, one of his students, a musical prodigy. The movie is based on La Cage aux Rossignols.

The film explores the pain of a child's separation from his parents, and the transcendence of music as the greatest form of expression.

Chocolat (2000)
Dead Poets Society (1989)
Deconstructing Harry (1997)

I seem to like the foreign movies more than Hollywood. :p

As it is in Heaven (Sweden) - Paradise, now (Palestine) - Maria full of Grace (Colombia) - Turtles can Fly (Iraq) - Caramel (Lebanon) - Milk of Sorrow (Peru) - Volver (Spain)

...to name a few. :p
