hahaha we are all excited about this match up but seriously hoping Andy can take care of Rafa. I wouldn't mind seeing Andy having another shot at Lleyton just to solidify this recent victory and prove critics it wasn't just luck.

Wins over any top 5 player is what Andy needs and now!

Okay, something's gotta be wrong here. Deb's being positive. I am the one who thinks this will be another boring tournament Andy will lose somewhere around QFs/semis and Feds will take the trophy.

Yep, something's VERY wrong. I wouldn't mind Andy proving me wrong, though. :)

I actually wish Rafa could be seeded a bit lower so he could end up on Roger's side and take him out before the finals. Then Andy can play Rafa in the final.

Ok since you are here.

Um, how's Andy's foot and what's the word on that injury? All of sudden in the second set Andy is making a match of that final and he gets injured, I really would have liked to have seen what would have happened if he didn't.

Yes, it definitely sucks but it just proves that if he is fit and really in it mentally that he can beat, or at least have a chance of beating, ANYONE. Okay...well my friend sent me this e-mail...and she said that she does this survey website for television shows since she watches so much t.v. over the summer...anyways...she sent me this one question about an ad on t.v. that she said was obviously supposed to be Andy's new AMEX commercial....here's the question:

In a commercial you may have seen, what had a tennis player's spirit-like inner essence -- or "mojo" -- done, causing him to perform poorly during practice and causing his coach to run off the court to deal with the problem?

These are the choices:
1. Got into a brawl over an attractive female and then rented out a hotel suite
2. Spent a wild night on the town and then went shopping for fancy clothes
3. Snuck into a women's locker room and then bought drinks for everyone at a bar
4. Got into a tense, high-speed car chase and then went water-skiing

Weird, huh?

I don't know if anyone has posted this...but on the Tennis Week site there is an article about the Babolat shoe launch. In the quote below, Andy talks about his foot injury. Here is the link for the whole article if you are interested: http://www.sportsmediainc.net/tennisweek/index.cfm?func=showarticle&newsid=13678&bannerregion=

"I kind of felt a knot that kind of came out of nowhere — I guess it was a fluke thing — so the trainer came out and decided he was going to get it out with his hands and that was a little painful," Roddick said of his treatment during Sunday's final, adding his foot should not present problems for the U.S. Open, which begins on Monday. "I'm pretty optimistic (about the Open). I was walking around yesterday without really much pain at all and I'm going to try to get out there and hit some today so it really shouldn't be of much concern at all."

Roddick Rocks The Lacoste Launch
By Swarali Gandhre
2005-08-24

Macy's hosted the launch of Andy's Lacoste clothing line at their Herald Square branch in New York City on August 23, 2005. This Macy's branch will be the largest supplier of the Lacoste line in the United States.

Although the event wasn't scheduled to begin until 5:00 pm, fans and media converged well ahead of schedule for a glimpse of the tennis star. Andy arrived punctually, and after posing for pictures and answering questions from the media, he got down to business and began meeting and greeting his fans.

Fans who purchased a Lacoste item were given a free hat and had the opportunity to have it signed by Andy. The gala continued for a good hour and a half where Andy signed ferociously and took pictures with all his loyal fans. Thanks to the ongoing hot and humid New York City weather, he did have to take a couple of timeouts to change shirts. Former doubles legend, Murphy Jensen conducted a short interview with Andy for The Tennis Channel. Agent, Ken Myerson, sister-in-law, Ginger Roddick, several Lacoste representatives, myself and my ar.com cohort, Jen, helped keep the area around Andy mob-free while photographer, Ron Angle, snapped away. The festivities came to an end at 6:30 pm when Andy left the scene.

Andy will maintain his busy schedule throughout the week as he continues the countdown to the US Open.

Check back to ar.com for all the latest updates.

RODDICK: I FEEL OK

By DAN MARTIN

August 24, 2005 -- Andy Roddick found himself in a familiar spot last weekend when he lost in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters to the top-ranked player, Roger Federer.
It was his 10th loss in 11 matches against the Swiss star, and the straight-set defeat reminded Roddick just how dominant Federer has become.

"What Roger is doing now is similar to what Tiger Woods did three or four years ago," Roddick said. "He makes everyone better by chasing him."

Federer has won Wimbledon three straight times, and next week looks to defend his U.S. Open title. Roddick, who scored his lone Grand Slam victory in Flushing Meadows two years ago, hopes to get in his way.

Roddick will be battling a sore right foot stemming from an injury he suffered last week in Cincinnati.

Yesterday, Roddick sounded relatively certain that he would be at full strength in time for the Open.

"I'm pretty optimistic," Roddick said. "I'm walking around yesterday without much pain and I'm planning on hitting balls today. It shouldn't be a problem at the Open."

Federer is far from Roddick's only obstacle. The 19-year-old phenom Rafael Nadal beat Federer in the semis at the French Open en route to winning it all at Roland Garros.

"I feel like I've been knocking on the door the past couple of years," said Roddick, who turns 23 next week. "I'd love to get a win and a second slam."

It's out.

Andy needs to thank someone.

He is in the third quarter, seeded to meet Coria in the QF. Andre and Nadal are the two big seeds in the bottom quarter

Andy opens against LUX :(:(:(:(

Probably Robby in the 2nd round , Tommy Haas in the third round, also Gasquet and Ljubicic are in his section for possible 4th round.

All in all I think it's an OK draw. Hard early on, so he'll have to be alert from round 1, but not so hard that the really dangerous people are in his immediate section. With this draw, I'll be disappointed if he doesn't make the SF.

PinkFeatherBoa
08-24-2005, 06:22 PM
I think Andy's got a reasonable draw, now all he needs is to believe. :scared: ;)

Deboogle!.
08-24-2005, 06:25 PM
Yes definitely. LUX is tough, but beatable - and Andy does well with lefties generally. Surely he wouldn't lose to Robby twice in a row, especially not at the USO - that would surely be a night match. Tommy hasn't played well lately, neither has Ljubicic, and Gasquet has had a tendonitis problem.

So it's tough, but not awful. He just has to be focused and stuff from the start and he could go far.

From a press release about the AMEX stuff
-----------
Andy Roddick's 'Mojo' on the Loose
American Express' sponsorship of the 2005 US Open Tennis Championships will be brought to life through an interactive communications campaign featuring tennis star, Andy Roddick along with Andy's Mojo or alter-ego who visits jazz clubs, restaurants, and more, showcasing how the American Express® Card opens doors to a world of service. The campaign, which spans broadcast, print, outdoor and online channels, is tagged "Have You Seen Andy's Mojo?" and includes a broadcast spot that breaks on August 25. A second broadcast spot will launch after the tournament begins.

The web extension, www.andysmojo.com will provide an interactive, multimedia portal to the campaign for American Express Cardmembers and fans. Borrowing the campaign's creative themes, the site will allow visitors to click on Mojo's various trappings - receipts, restaurant matchbooks, etc. - each item of which will clue the visitor daily into a new stop on Mojo's New York City tour. Andy got the really easy draw holy crap! He just has to worry about Andre or Nadal who will have to play each other first before they can play Andy. If Andy can serve well I think we can look at him in the semis and maybe finals because I think Rafa v. Roddick isn't a good matchup for Rafa on HC.

Roger has a much tougher draw with Nalbandian, Ferrero, Kiefer, Safin, and Hewitt all lurking in his half...ouch.

It is gonna be interesting to see what happens that he and Andre are in the same half - Andy won't get as many night matches as he got last year b/c of that. His first match probably won't be at night but I'm sure him vs Robby will be.

US Open odds:

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050824/mxw004.html?.v=6
Current Odds: (All Odds Subject to Change)

Odds to Win 2005 Men's U.S. Open (favorites)
Roger Federer 5/7
Rafael Nadal 9/2
Andy Roddick 15/2
Marat Safin 15/1
Leyton Hewitt 15/1
Andre Agassi 27/1
David Nalbandian 55/1
Nikolay Davydenko 69/1
Robby Ginepri 79/1
Richard Gasquet 84/1

OK so how can Nadal, who's won exactly one hard court title (and at a tournament where Roger and Marat weren't playing and Andy and Lleyton went out early), be the second fav over past winners like Andy, Lleyton, Marat and Andre? I know he's the "hot thing" right now, but has he really proven yet that he can contend at a GS on a fast hard court? I don't get it.

----------
'It's also worked out pretty well for the top two Americans, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi. They have avoided each other and are in the other half to Federer, which is always a good thing.'

Roddick plays Gilles Muller of Luxembourg in round one and could play number 13 seed Richard Gasquet of France in the last 16.
=========================

No. 4 Andy Roddick, the winner of the men's U.S. Open Series who is also playing for double the top prize, appeared to have an easy draw through to the semis:o, where he could meet Nadal or Agassi.

I wouldn't call Muller (S/V player) and Richie easy matchups. I don't see either doing too much to hurt Roddick as long as he is healthy he should make the semi to face Andre or Nadal.

Andy's draw is very doable. The funny thing is that Andre must be thinking the same thing "my draw is just fine...". I'm sure Andre would love to win another slam before he retires but Andy needs it more.

I was hoping Andy would be in same half as Rafa (hooray!), now they have to live up to their seedings. :D

It's also interesting how Andy hasn't been in the same draw as Roger since he lost the number 2 ranking. He must be the "luckiest guy" on tour then.

Somebody in GM said Roger's draw was easy. Er, two of the guys who beat him this year are in his draw and I don't think Roger is terribly pleased to see Marat there, injured or not. Nalbandian is a non-factor. Roger will likely end up brushing him off the court like he has with his former masters.

No, Andy could get Gasquet in the fourth round....

Well, players who play with a TON of spin can give Roger trouble... so if he were to have to face a good clay-courter who was also good on HC and hit with a lot of spin (a la Nadal) that would be tougher for him, also if he had big server-types like Karlovic or Arthurs who could go on a real hot streak, that would be tough for anyone. Also, the young firecrackers such as a Monfils/Berdych/Gasquet who wouldn't be afraid to go at him like crazy, that would be tougher for him.

LOL Jace, exactly. But even more objectively, his draw could've been a lot harder than it is, even for Roger. IMO.

ROUND OF 16
Ivan the Terrible. *&^% this guy and send him packing home, Andy. He can't do shit in big tournaments.

QUARTERS
The top half is weak as hell. I'm going to go with Lopez. Andy will beat him because FLo will still be waiting for his nail polish to dry.

SEMIS
Agassi. If Andy's going to fall this is where it will happen. He needs a win over Andre almost as badly as he needed one over Lleyton.
Nadal. If it's Nadal then it's a dream come true. I really believe that if anybody can stop Rafa on the hardcourts it will be Andy (not factoring Ivo). Or, I hope it will be Andy. ;) And I'd love to see a rematch. It's gonna be ugly!
ToJo. This is almost as bad as seeing Bracciali's name anywhere on a draw sheet near Andy's name. lol

Tennis Week on Andy's draw:
---------------
Andy Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, could face either Nadal or Agassi in the semifinals if he navigates tricky tests in the first week. The fourth-seeded Roddick takes on Luxembourg lefty Gilles Muller in the first round and could meet compatriot Robby Ginepri in the second round that would be a rematch of the 2000 U.S. Open junior final. Ginepri beat Roddick in last month's Indianapolis quarterfinals to register his first win over his former — and perhaps future — Davis Cup teammate in seven professional meetings. While Ginepri has been one of the hottest players during this U.S. Open Series, it remains to be seen if he can sustain that success in New York as Ginepri has failed to surpass the second round in three of his four career U.S. Open appearances. Assuming Roddick advances to the third round he could play 29th-seeded German Tommy Haas, who has won four of seven matches with Roddick and reached the U.S. Open quarters last year.

A potential fourth round match could pit Roddick against either 13th-seeded Richard Gasquet or 18th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic, who has sputtered after reaching four finals in his first six tournaments this year. Roddick is 5-2 lifetime against Ljubicic, but the Croatian won their last match on hard court in Davis Cup play in March.

Roddick not ready to be written off By Simon Cambers
Reuters

When Andy Roddick was dismantled in straight sets by Lleyton Hewitt in the Masters Cup semi-finals last November, it seemed the American would begin a slide down the rankings from which he might not recover.

After reaching the final at Wimbledon for a second consecutive year and having won four titles in 2005, however, the 22-year-old Roddick goes into the U.S. Open showing the kind of form that brought him the title in 2003 and the number one ranking.

Victory in Washington kicked off his summer in style and his run to the final in Cincinnati, during which he beat Hewitt for only the second time in eight meetings, helped him to rise back to number four in the rankings.

"That's very important," Roddick said. "It's definitely not comfortable when the draw comes out and you're supposed to play either (Rafael) Nadal, Hewitt, (Roger) Federer or (Marat) Safin in the last eight."

At Flushing Meadows, the draw has given Roddick the possibility of facing fellow former champion Andre Agassi in the semi-finals. His first big test could be against 13th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the last 16. (have they forgotten how well Robby's playing?)

Having split with coach Brad Gilbert at the end of last year, Roddick teamed up with another American, Dean Goldfine, and his hard work and dedication have already paid off with victories in San Jose, Houston, Queen's and Washington.

His huge serve and forehand remain his main weapons, but Roddick has added a subtlety to his game that had been lacking previously.

DIFFERENT OPTIONS

The serve-and-volley is much more in evidence, as are patience and variety, particularly on the backhand.

"When I was getting some grief earlier in the year for losing some close matches trying these things, I assured you guys that I was working on it and I was working hard," he said in Cincinnati.

"I wanted to be able to develop different options. Now it's coming to fruition and everybody's acting really surprised about it.

"I've put in a lot of work this year, fitness-wise, trying to work on different aspects of my game, knowing that it would come around some time.

"Now I have the confidence that they're going to work in matches. And so, you know, it looks like a huge transformation, but it's definitely a process.

"When I won in 2003, I felt like I was playing above myself, but now I feel much more comfortable and I expect to play well. I am a better player now than I was two years ago."

In addition to his victory in 2003, Roddick has been to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open every year since 2001.:yeah:

This time he will go into the event as winner of the U.S. Open Series, having performed best overall at the hardcourt events in North America.

"I think it's cool because it's an overall judge of the consistency of the summer," he said.

"And when people were questioning what kind of summer I was having, to finish number one in the U.S. Open Series gives some factual back-up." (it would've been even better if you'd won the matches you could've won :D)

Here's what Matt Cronin says about Andy's draw
--------------------
Andy Roddick: A good but not great year for A-Rod, who just can't seem to put his entire package together. All those gradual improvements he's been making over the past year don't show up consistently enough against the other elite players. He has almost zero confidence against Fed and just watched Nadal roar past him in the rankings. But this is his home country Grand Slam and you can expect a much better performance that last year's quarterfinal shocking loss to Joachim Johannson.

But Roddick will be tested quite early, by Gilles Muller in the first round, by his old foe Robby Ginepri in the second (pencil that one in for a Thursday night match), maybe Tommy Haas in the third round and Ivan Ljubcic in the fourth round. If he survives those contests, he'll be in good shape for quarters and then should be primed for a brawl against Nadal or Agassi. If Fed falls to someone else, this '03 champ has a solid chance at another Open crown.

You know, I've noticed this in the past year: that some of the most amazing shots played, and some of the best, most memorable matches played have come mostly from Andy. :D

But, I would say that the best match this year still has to be Safin/Federer at AO. And Roger also had a brilliant five-setter against Nadal at Indian Wells and that was quite memorable too.

The entire French Open this year was memorable thanks to Nadal.

Wimbledon was the only wash-out in terms of memorable matches this year. But of course, the best match of the tournament (Andy vs ToJo) was never aired.

Fumus

Andy vs. ToJo had the best ending.

I think the biggest unexpected wash of the year came in Houston with Andy play amazing against Seb.

The dive shot against Bracialli was amazing and it help remind me why I was an Andy fan.

I think Andy's spin volley against Roger in the second set at the of the Cinncy final was pretty amazing too.

The reason why Andy makes the funnest shots is because he's soo explosive. Unlike Roger who is so relaxed, you can't tell if it's an explosion or just a light tap.

Andy Featured In Lexus Ad Campaign

In his latest ad campaign, Andy is in the driver's seat…literally. This week Lexus will launch its nation wide "Road to The US Open" campaign featuring Andy.

The humorous commercials feature Andy behind the wheel of a Lexus with a variety of characters in the passenger seat. We don't want to give too much away, so keep a watch for Andy on cruise control on your television. The commercials are scheduled to run for at least three weeks, throughout the US Open. The first two of this series were shown during the finals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, held in Cincinnati.

In addition to joining Team Roddick, Lexus recently inked a deal with the USTA as the official vehicle of the US Open and the presenting sponsor of the US Open Men's Singles Championships. Beginning this year, the Men's singles champion will be awarded a 2006 G5 430 Lexus.

Check back to Ar.com for more of Andy's US Open promotions.

Tennis-x on Andy's draw.... :o
-----------
Third Quarter
Seeds: (4) Andy Roddick, (8) Guillermo "El Mago" Coria, (10) Mariano Puerta, (13) Richard Gasquet, (18) Ivan Ljubicic, (23) Jiri Novak, (26) Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez, (29) Tommy Haas
Floaters: "Rappin'" Vince Spadea, Nicolas Massu, Stanislas Wawrinka, Rainer Schuettler, Gilles Muller

When A-Rod (or "Pay-Rod" after he receives his check for winning the US Open Series) saw his third-quarter draw, he must have thought 'Wait a minute, I thought this thing was run by the USTA -- I need to make some calls...'

If Andy has any mojo coming into the Open it was immediately dampered by his draw, which reads like a Super Villain Hall of Fame.

Roddick opens against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, who reached the L.A. final before falling to Agassi. A second-round meeting looms with countryman Robby Ginepri who Babolatted him out of Cincinnati over a week ago:scratch:, and in the third round awaits Tommy Haas, who the American has lost four of his seven meetings with (but has won the last three, including 2 on HC :haha: ). Fourth round? Croat Ivan Ljubicic who won their last meeting in Davis Cup play (who has played like crap since and I would be shocked if he made the 4th round), or Richard Gasquet who Roddick has never faced.

Haas says he is fully recovered from his freak accident back at Wimbledon where he stepped on a ball, badly twisting his ankle.

Likely facing Roddick or Gasquet in the quarters will be (8) Coria or, get this, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka who has a perfect-storm-type opportunity to emerge for a mini-section of hardcourt lightweights including Jiri Novak (slumping), Nicolas Massu (recovering from injury), and Mariano Puerta (just happy to be here).

Andy will be getting a lot of TV time, and rightly so since he will be practically hosting an almost nightly talk show (smack talk, that is) with some of the hottest players in the game in the early goings.
