I wish Nicolas good luck as well. I don't think he will be seeded. He is 38 and unless 5 people withdraw, I doubt he will be seeded. That's a shame. With our luck he will draw Roger, Marat, Lleyton or Andy in the 1st rnd or 2nd

It's a horrible draw to do something really big here, but a good draw to make some points (3rd round/4th round). I hope Eurosport will have a special coverage for Germany like they had last year.

Neely
08-24-2005, 07:25 PM
It turned out quite well :) There is absolutely no reason to complain about his draw in the early rounds, the only thing that bothers me is that Federer is again nearby him :o Okay, not in the 1st/2nd round, but he is in the same eighth like Kiwi, meaning 4th round.

And now it's up to Kiwi to get to 4th round, all winnable matches if he wants to get up the rankings to show what he can do! (except that Nalbandian is playing in very good form)

kiwiteami
08-24-2005, 08:12 PM
The draw for ONCE is not that bad.The only problem that I see is..Federer! But you know he ALMOST had him in Cincinnati and at Wimbledon..third time might be the good one..I hope so.

Not too bad. Let's take it one match at a time. The matches I think he should win, he loses and vice versa. But on paper, the 4th round is very do able. He would match what he did last year.

bavaria100
08-25-2005, 12:42 PM
Kiwi should reach the fourth round. Stepanek could be a little bit tricky, but he hasn´t played well since the Queens Club tourney in London, so Kiwi should beat him. I don´t know about Juan Carlos because he´s a great player when he´s on, but Kiwi playing at his best should win the match. If he´ll face Federer, he can play freely because he´s got nothing to lose.

They showed Kiwi's match from the first until the last point. He really played nothing special and way below averagely because the first one and a half sets have been very very rusty and from time to time not pretty to watch. He started cold with his serve, low percentage on first serve and mixed with a lot of double faults. He had always again troubles with his service games and had to save a really big shitload of break points (he saved almost all, himself he converted 100% ;) ). He looked not to be in his rhythm on the return games either. It became better in towards the end of the 2nd set and his returns were working better and it was a lot of easier for him and Vanek didn't so many opportunities to be active like earlier. In the third set I was pretty convinced then that he will never lose that match and it was easy from there on, still not the best performance, but this was clearly enough for Vanek today. I think he was nervous and felt he was not playing well. But he was very quiet and focused today and as he converted his third match point with a backhand crosscourt passing shot he cried out a short scream of of release: JAAAAAAAAAA

Thanks for the description Neely. He's going to have to pick it up but a win is better than no win at all :) His serve is going have to get better if he is going to get far in the tournament. I really think Thomas or someone needs to refine his serve. He can serve hard for 1st serve (125-130 mph) but only getting 40-55% in, isn't going to work. His second serve needs to get more of a kick to be more effective. If he can tweak his serve, I would see him winning a lot more matches.

kiwiteami
08-30-2005, 11:52 PM
Well I didn't see the match but I looked at his % of first serves..not too good.It has been like this since Indianapolis.Stepanek could be tricky. But REMEMBER he has a PLAN..lol.and maybe the plan is to stop being a mentalcase and focus on his game.lol

Nalbandian's 2nd match will determine whether we have to worry about him or if he is running impressive form. I think if this guy picks it up, he is very dangerous because he is pretty much an allround player with great returning skills like Kiwi.

You know,in Indian Wells,Kiwi destroyed Nalbandian,I know,i was there and almost got thrown out but that is another story..lol.I think that if Nicolas keeps his cool and plays the same game with him as he did in march,he has a good chance to win.BUT,his serve was better then.Nalbandian ,when he has good days, well they are vERY good and when they are bad..they are very bad.David is a mentalcase so if he can manage to mess around with his mind,he has a chance.lets hope so.But he has to play Stepanek first.I DON'T understand why he is not playing doubles, like all german players are playing doubles..not him.But my problem is..when you see Roger play like he did today and win so easily, you wonder..who will stop him? who can?

lol, sure... Roger today didn't have these start-up problems like Kiwi
The commentator also concluded: "A very rusty start for Kiwi, he himself should know there is a whole lot of potential for improvement in the next rounds.... but not everybody can come out and play such a first round match like Federer in express tempo that lasted only 70 minutes" I thought: damn, man; you're right! *g*

He also told another story, concerning that Kiwi usually wants the ball back that won him the point. He said that Federer in Cincinnati put one of these balls into his pocket and kept it until the next point and Kiwi didn't get this one in time  Naughty, naughty Roger, now we know why Kiwi didn't convert this important break point :p

Well,I didn't see it when Roger do that and trust me I would of scream after him:"give him the ball back!!".lol.I know how Nicolas wants the ball back and each time, you can hear me screaming after the ballkids:"he wants the ball back!" lol.You know,Nicolas played his best tennis against Roger but then Roger woke up and well,we know the rest! lol.It is going to take a LOT to beat Roger.Like I said the PLAN might be to stay calm, don,t go mental and stay focus.I want him to win.But he really needs to improve his serve..like NOW! In 2 days,we'll see if he can past the second row, cause that is what he needs to do first.

Thanks Neely for telling us what they are saying about him.

I'm not even thinking Roger now. Radek is going to be tough. He is pretty consistent. I don't know much of his game. This interview is in German and they were mainly talking about football, about his Hannover 96 away jersey that he is wearing (the commentator/interviewer said: "sure, it's an away game here so the away jersey is appropriate"), about Arthur Ashe kid's day. Things like that, it was more like a relaxed off-topic chat that Eurosport did with him and they showed a few of these during changeovers.

Anyway, I didn't want to show you because of the audio content, it was more the visual one...!!! ;) :) :p

I'm watching Kiwi now on Eurosport and unfortunately Stepanek is looking very strong. Kiwi has had several BPs, but can't convert them. He's being very quiet too, no temper tantrums yet. I think he needs to get fired up more or this is going to slip away :(

A strange match so far. Again a very restrained start from Kiwi that made him lose the 1st set. Now both blew triple break points in the 2nd set so far. Hopefully Kiwi will be the first to convert a break point, he would need a lead now to have security.

Stepanek really playing well so far. Especially at the net. Kiwi can't return good enough and he yet has to find a way to pass Stepanek at the net who is reaching almost every ball.

Damn, he's in big big troubles now :scared: He needs a success now to break Stepanek's serve.

He must break somehow Stepanek now to see that it IS POSSIBLE to break him. It's already in his head that Stepanek is like a brickwall at the net and that his service games are almost untouchable. So he must get rid of this thought as soon as possible and also to make Stepanek think more. Stepanek rock solid so far.

Kiwi def. Stepanek 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-3

What an unbelievable change in Kiwi's game if you compare his return games in the first two and half sets to the rest. He hit many more return winners off Stepanek's serve or good returns that meant trouble for Stepanek at the net and he also had ideas how to get past Stepanek at the net to pass him.

Also Stepanek played almost a perfect match in the first two and half set, but then it was Kiwi who gained the edge and I would also say he was much fitter towards the end than Stepanek who looked significantly slower than earlier in the match as he digged out a lot of shots at the back of the court.

Thanks Kiwi for playing that cool match and not giving up, always believing in the chance and waiting for the moment until Stepanek's level will drop: that meant a lot for you! And for us of course, too! :)

Ah come on, nobody cares about that, we all know what is meant :p

I think the only difference in the arrangements of letters of German and English keyboard is that the "z" and the "y" are swapped. So the would mean that the "e" and "w" are only one key away and you are forgiven for that because it happened in the excitement about the win :p

Neely, thank you! Yes, I was supposed to be in Los Angeles for three days, but I sold my TV show to Fox, the first meeting! Canceled the rest and hurried home! (I will be hidining Kiwi's name in the show again this year :) )

And really, I meant the other thiing I said. It's a really terrible time here right now. Litterally hundreds of thousands of people homeless, thousands dead, cities destroyed. I know every country has daced things like this, but it is the worst natural disaster in out nation's history. So I'm flying back, thinking who cares about tennis? Then the match started and I am so glad I do care. I'm so glad there is something that can distract us for a few hours. And I'm so glad Kiwi won!

Yes, it's a horrible tragedy. I wasn't affected my the hurricane but am very close to it the tragedy. Living in Texas, we are housing all the refugees in every large city on Texas, mine included. The hospitals are full in town here with patients.

I don't know if this were the background noises around this court or if it was fault of the broadcast. But also the commentator said that this court is horrible and that you can hear speakers announcements from the facility, adverts, police horns, people chatting behind the court, so many movement around you because the court is not entirely closed. :retard:

Kiwi did win on court #11 and 10 already, but I hope he is going to feel even more well on Grand Stand :)

Kiwi played diffident in this third set in the deciding moments and was mainly shuffling the balls back into the court. Maybe he felt that Clément doesn't have any strong winners anymore? And frankly I don't mind.

PS. I know that sounds nuts, but how often have I read "He lost because I wasn't watching," and things like that. I mean, I know it doesn't REALLY matter-- but hey, it's no worse than touching the doubles alley line with your racket before each receiving point!

Good job Kiwi :yeah: You'll get him next time ;) :)

I'm disappointed due to the missed chances in the third set. I would have been quite confident if he broke there and if Federer had minus one lucky shot on the line in this situation. Federer down 1-2 sets would have looked different, that was his chance

Does anyone think, Kiwi would be offended or anything if I sent him a bottle of champagne via his hotel? He did great and he'll need a drink.

Kiwi :fiery:

As much as I am expecting him to lose, he has so many chances in this match, to even win it, but Kiwi :fiery: is always Kiwi :fiery:

He could have easily win the first two sets, and lead in the third set :bigcry:

Why he has to face Roger this early, otherwise I can see him go further in this tournament. Well, better luck next time.

Hope he will find more success in Asian tournaments, he usually had a great results in that continent, and most of his titles came from there

Go Kiwi :fiery: :fiery:

It's still not more than then minimum what he reached in New York. I don't know, is it 5 years ago when he reached the last of his 4 quarterfinals? Why can he never have a successful GS? :(

At least he don't have to play qualifying in Paris now with his few wins here and I'm confident he'll finish top 24, that should be his goal at least to avoid a 3rd round match against a top 8 player in Australia. Now he should win at least one of his 5,6 last tournaments. I'm going mad when I see guys like Stepanek on no.16 and Kiefer on 38.

kek

He played well at times. However, he has to be more consistent to beat Roger. The double faults really hurt him. That lucky shot 3 all in the 3rd set, was the typical Federer shot that made Roger step up his level. Maybe next year in the slams, Nicolas will be on opposite sides of the draw.

I don't think Nicolas will be offended by champagne at the hotel, however, to me, he isn't the champagne type. I think he would prefer a beer instead. :spit: You could also send him a mini Roger voodoo doll to poke holes into as well.

:haha: :haha:

____________

Federer is just Federer. If you want to beat him, even on one of his worse days, you need to be so totally present to take the chances in order to make him even think of losing a match. And once he is in that position, he would have been beatable for sure.

But Kiwi couldn't get the frigging break in the third set and the end of the story was that Federer raised his game for one return game and the set was gone for Kiwi. Instead of serving for a 2-1 set lead, he was down 1-2 sets. That's what Federer makes so strong. Just remember this point as he saved the 2nd break point of Kiwi in the third set. Against everybody else I would say, Kiwi's good net attack would have been good enough, but Federer not only retrieves the ball, he is producing an unbelivable backhand crosscourt passing shot out of his forearm. Such little things decided it.

I think in order for Kiwi to get this feeling and to make such situations, he has to play more of such matches and he must continue to go his way, maybe winning a tournament wouldn't be bad also ;)

Just like Wimbledon, he was the first player(this tournie to really challenge Roger). As everyones said it's a shame he cudn't get the break at 3 all. I'm so mad I didn't get to see it:( From the people who did, was it more of Federor playing to good on the big the points or was it more of Kiwi not taking his oppurtunities(like erors on cruscial points). What's u're take on it ?

The dumb errors came at the worst possible times (like to go up breakpoint) and Federer's play picked up at just the exact right moments (on breakpoint). So it was a combination of both.

It was like Kiefer stopped thinking out there and fell into bad habits, like always hitting drop volleys, when a volley to the open court was the obvious shot. He could have gotten a couple more breakpoint opportunities on Roger if he didn't try the drop volley so many times.

He had a really big smile :D I think in the third set when he hit a sort of squash shot from way behind the baseline on the run for a winner on the opposite baseline. I have it saved on Tivo, so I'll try to get it on the computer and post it on my website nicolaskiefer.tripod.com. That way we can take something positive away from the match! :yeah:

We..,now I have time to write.lol.Ok,Kiwi lost but again he took a set away from Federer..as he did in cincinnato and Wimbledon..who else has done that so far this summer? no one.Yes it was bad luck again that he had to face Federer in the 4th round. He needs to go back home, rest and stay in shape.Even if I,m sad to see him leave America,I will remember, until I see him again, that huge smile that he had on during the point of the match.Mc Enroe said it yesterday,it loks like Kiefer has a plan..and it almost worked..maybe next year!

I laughed too Karine, when McEnroe said he had a plan. Johnny Mac unlike Brad Gilbert, was very complimentary to Nicolas and his game. I wasn't expecting that. Maybe one mental case to another, they bond ;)

Agreed, McEnrow was suprisingly complimentary! But your quote indicates what makes Kiwi great to watch. He thinks out there. In hindsight not every deciddion is always the right one, but you can see him thinking. So many players (Roddick, for instance) just pound away and if things don't go their way, they have no plan B. Kiwi has a plan B, C and D-- he's always trying, thinking, figuring out the puzzel of his opponant.
