Russia's Marat Safin has decided not to defend his title at next month's China Open, organizers announced yesterday.
Safin, ranked seventh in the world, failed to confirm his entry for the Setember 10-25 event by the registration deadline, French Open champion Rafael Nadal leads a star-studded field, which also features former world No.1 Carlos Moya, fellow Spanish claycourt specialist Juan Carlos Ferrero and Guillermo Coria of Argentina.

He thought as a defending champion, he could get a wild card to play even missing the deadline entry, but we heard that the tourney won't give him the wild card.

 nova, is ur av the pic I took on CO last year?

it is very weird to see that a defending champion says he will come once and once again while the official doesn't accept even intends to sue him for the absence! :o

totally gutted if he doesn't come. I've never seen him play live.

understandable if he has DC the week after though.

I think he just missed the sign up date.

Yes, it is  thanks for the pic!! I hope i can take some myself this year....

I think hippo's agent got some communication problem with the organization. It's a pity he can't come, but i still can watch him in Shanghai 2 months later.

Why the hell didn't they give him a wildcard. He won the Australian Open this year and he's one of only three people who can beat Federer....

I know.... all the fans want to watch him play here....I don't think the organization will ignore this....and I believe they once had planed to give hippo a wild card. But the result is a pity.....his agent maybe also have some problem in the communication, coz when the wildcard is mentioned, seems the organization is a bit upset, and said quite resolutely they won't give hippo WC. So, I am quite curious what his agent said to them after missing the deadline entry, and why hippo still hasn't know he can't play CO while his agent should already know that.....

And Human Washington, will you go to watch China Open next month?

i'm sure that they'll give to Marat a wild card, he has been request as the most popular player tennis in the world!!
If they want to loose money and audience, without Marat it's the best solution .I hope they are not so stupid to don't give him a WC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marat seems pretty sure to hav his WC!!!!!

I don't think there will be many who only want to watch Marat. :p even if there are some, the tickets money amount they lost won't be more than the appearance fee.

JC Ferrero blew Shanghai off last year. He could do the same to Beijing there.

No, he won't. Last year he had DC semi the week before that, and also he was not in the form. This year is pretty different. I don't care about him, but have a feeling he can do a good job this time.
