Give Nadal credit for becoming the biggest threat to Federer. And for Agassi, he can still get it done, pushing the best of the best to the limit. No shame in losing to Nadal. Just hope you're okay for the US Open.

Andre :sad: I just hope he keeps going, he is such a legend, he was really getting irritated by Rafa taking too much time

When Andre is cranky you know he's losing. Nadal wasn't talking undue time between serves. Andre was only irritated because he wanted to serve while Nadal was winded. Nadal can't get a time warning when he's within the 20 second time frame.

Here's a quote I saw only today, and I liked it so much I thought I would post it again. :devil:

Nadal will not win a title off of clay this year and will likely be number 2 this year. That is my prediction and Nadal will not make the 2nd week of USO. There is another one for you. I tend to be better with my crystal ball than hitchhiker Fumus. To tell you the truth, hitch doesn't use a crystal ball to see the tennis future; he uses an eight-ball. :retard:

I know, but Patrick said he is entitled to 20 secs and he was not exceeding his time, so he wasn't really breaking any rule. I agree that he takes a lot of time an makes the points very long, but he is not doing anything wrong, right?

Nice job by Rafa but Agassi was horrible today. Very boring match. Could have been a classic but it wasn't. I don't think Agassi could ever beat Nadal on any surface.

I didn't see the whole thing but there were some interesting moments. Agassi was able to move Nadal around and tire him out at times. If Agassi were a good volleyer he would have probably won. In the end Agassi was too tired to play well. It's too bad he had to play two matches yesterday.....but it was nice that at least this went to 3 sets. I thought Nadal over did the fist pumping bit at times when it was no longer kind. After you break Agassi twice in a set....why rub salt in the wounds?

Andre forced the issue too much at time esp when he had some forehand sitters. For all his experience, he still chokes when it matters.

After the first set, I never thought (but hoped) Agassi could win a set the way he was playing. Glad he did. Not a very exciting final, Nadal's a bad match-up for almost everybody with his left topspin that goes almost resembles the perfect art of moonballing, lol. Players will just have to deal with it cos it's not goin anywhere. Another "very exciting summer match-up" goes down the toilet, it seems.

Congrats to Nadal and for a great tournament Andre. I hope he isn't too tired and play Cincinnati, I think he can get to the SFs there and if Rogi is rusty because of lack of matchplay, even another final.

Looking forward to Cincinnati, seeing The King, The Kid, The Three Musketeers and The Ageless One. Should be fun.

He actually looked mad as hell, and that's when everything started going down the hill for him.

But they had a nice handshake at the end and exchanged a couple of nice words (they seemed nice). Rafa said something to him, I wonder what. But I don't think this is going to become an issue for Andre.

I think his serve is weird-looking, thus I don't like it. But it's proving to be very efficient on hardcourts. She has that wicked spin on it, and great variation so it makes it hard to read sometimes.

He's breaking down his weaknesses so quickly. He didn't have a backhand slice 'til the other day and he used to do that dropshot with his forehand, but I've seen him use pretty effectively his backhand dropshot and it seems more of a hidden shot than his forehand's. Defense is perfect, offense is great, serve is good, slices are average, he can volley better.

I had the impression that the interviewer was referring to Nadal retiring from a match (not from his career) before he got to play Agassi since at that time, he had pulled out of doubles because of his left arm.
RAFAEL NADAL: So for me, play the final here is unbelievable tournament. If I play against Andre Agassi , is unbelievable, too, no? I want to play against him because he is a legend of tennis. I never play with him before. For me, play against him is a new experience.

I hope play with him before he retires. I don't know when he retire because he's unbelievable, but I hope play before.

----------------------------------------------------------

Q. Earlier today Rafael Nadal was saying he'd like to play you before you retire. Do you have any plans to retire soon?

ANDRE AGASSI: Yeah, I'd like to play him before he retires (smiling). I think that would be great to see him on the other side of the net before he retires.

Some fans of NAdal just can't be happy I guess.

Nadal played a great match. Andre hit the ball EXTREMELY well and most players would not be able to keep up with him. But Nadal chased down shot after shot after shot. He put the ball back to at least a neutral position on Agassi's side and forced Agassi to hit a clean winner which ehe could not do. Agassi hits the ball as cleanly as ever but he can't hit the kill shot as well anymore.

Nadal was also impressive with his inside-out, acute angle BH DTL. It was really impressive. Also impressive was a serve out wide and then taking the ball early on the FH side and hitting it down the line.

I really hope we get to see Nadal vs. Roddick in Cincy. Nadal is a completely different player compared to the time Roddick beat up on him at the USO.

Nadal never ceases to amaze and impress me. I think that if he and Andy play next week, Rafa could so beat him, especially the way Andy has been playing lately. Rafa would kill Andy's short forehands and even Andy's serve hasn't been at its best. It hasn't even been a whole year, and a match between them now would be so different than when it was last time.

Q. A couple of days ago you mentioned that you wished you could play Andre Agassi before he retired. Yesterday said he hopes he can play you before you retire. What do you think?

RAFAEL NADAL: I hope. I hope he retire first before me. If I retired before him, I am totally injury (laughter). He have 35. I am 19. I don't know...
But I hope we will play. I would love play against Andre one final here. But I know, I always say for experience, every match is very difficult. I have very tough semifinal. Mathieu is playing unbelievable. He won Roddick the first round. He got a lot of confidence. In quarterfinal and in third round, Mathieu is playing unbelievable. He won 6-1, 6-2; 6-1, 6-2. These results -- (changing to Spanish).
ATP: Those results mean he's playing at an unbelievable level with a lot of confidence.

From this, I thought Andre meant retiring from a match, but having read Andre's comment, it's clear that he was joking. :lol:

Rafa would kill Andy's short forehands and even Andy's serve hasn't been at its best. It hasn't even been a whole year, and a match between them now would be so different than when it was last time.

Roddick would have a very hard time breaking Nadal. It's just like Agassi when he was at the top of his game. He didn't have a big serve but he was super hard to beat. He held his serve at a higher % than did Pete in 1995. I envision Nadal serving the ball to Roddick's BH, getting a neutral reply and then taking over the rally by pining him to his BH. Andre can rally better than anyone and he did a great job today but Nadal just ran everything down. Roddick's big advantage over Agassi is that he has a better kill shot and if his serve is on, he would be hard to break as well. I see maybe only 1 or 2 breaks of serve with at least a TB in there deciding it between them.

Looking at the draw, I think they will meet.

It is interesting because Safin can rally almost as well as Andre AND he can hit with power to put away the point. He also has a big serve that will win him more cheap points. I think his inconsistency wouldn't work against Nadal. Safin's ups and downs within a match itself would take a toll. Nadal just doesn't miss at all. In any case, I would like to see that matchup as well.

Didn't federer save like 7 mp's against draper in the first round of cincy two years ago? So he has been passed the first round.

Although federer may not have the best draw, his draw matchup wise is not threatening. There will be some high quality contests and good matches, but nobody to take him out until the later rounds.

Federer was in the Round of 16 against Nalbandian a couple of years ago. In any case, the past is really irrelevant. Last year, Federer was coming off a long stretch of tennis that included one week in Halle, 2 weeks at Wimbledon, 1 week in Gstaad and then winning in Canada. The year before, Nalbandian was in his head. Before that....Federer wasn't Federer.

I don't think even Dirk can come up with an excuse other than a thin field. Before the fast season, I wanted to wait before passing judgement on Nadal's abilities but he has proven that he is a force to reckon with on fast HC. Also, he is slowly on his way to creating the fear factor that Roger is able to generate. That is, most players will lose to him in their minds even before the start of the match.

Cincy is going to be fun especially because Roger is going to start his fast HC season campaign!

I don't think Nadal won because Agassi was too tired. He just played better plain and simple. And Andre made some bonehead mistakes under pressure at the end....like a couple df's at important points. I do think he was annoyed that Rafa was slowing him down and that also factored into those last two games. Sure the receiver has to play at the servers pace, but it still has to be within reason and I don't think Rafa was taking too much time. He's certainly not as slow and methodical as Rusedski and Kiefer are. I can't even watch those two play they're so damn slow. And Rusedski going for the towel after every point, even sometimes before a second serve. It's very annoying to watch.

Safin :bounce: I so missed him, any news on how Roger is doing especially with his horrible record in Cincy and his long layoff

Fed practiced some yesterday with a hitting partner (not sure who) but today he played a practice set with Tim Henman, which I thought was a bit of an odd choice (I know they are friends but) since Tim has been kinda off his game for a few months now. Roger was getting a bit frustrated with himself, hitting balls into the net and whining about the balls being too light when he hit shots long but he also had some amazing winners so :shrug: Later he was heading back to the players lounge and I was standing in front of the practice scoreboard not paying any attention to anyone around me and he elbowed me as he past! I was so disconnected by time I realized this he was like 2 feet from the door or else I would have quipped something about being short and invisible. :lol:

But Fed has a decent shot of winning his 1st round match since he's playing at night. If it had been a day match, I'd have said Blake would have been more likely since he plays better in the heat/humidity than Roger.

When you're opponent runs down every single shot you hit, you feel pressured to come up with a winner and as soon as possible. When your opponent is holding serve without any problem and he's tearing up your second serve, you feel pressured to come up with bigger serves. Bonehead mistakes happen when you feel pressured and tired.

Agassi played a great second set and showed his peers how to go after Nadal. Nadal had more in the tank in the 3rd set than Agassi who was too tired (and old) to keep up the attack he launched in the 2nd set.

Nadal has one helluva defensive game. Now on to Cincy where we hope to see him play against someone in the top 10 who isn't crowding retirement.

What the? Unless Fed is hobbling around the court he has a decent shot of winning his 1st round match because he's playing James Blake. Just as Roger won his recent matches at Wimbledon against Hewitt and Roddick in the locker room (neither player stepped onto the court believing for a minute they could beat Roger) so it will likely go with Blake tomorrow night.

Roger's not in Cincy for the appearance fee. If he's healthy, as he says he is, he shouldn't have any problems until he reaches the semis and maybe not until the final.

BTW -- At last year's USO, where it's hot and humid and sometimes windy, no one played better than Roger.

Well someone implied that Nadal won because Andre was tired. Which is silly, because if you watched the match it wasn't fatigue at all.

Someone or me? Yes, I did watch the match from start to finish and yes, I said that Agassi was too tired to continue playing the way he did in the second set when, it appeared to me, he figured out (and showed his peers) how to play Nadal.

Apparently you do not think Agassi's fatigue was a factor in Nadal's win?

In this case Blake must be among the top contenders to win in New York.

Nope, Dent is :p :o

I don't see what the figuring out is? Andre came out and started hitting with more conviction and went for his shots. I don't call that a good game plan, which is why he lost as it is hard to maintain for more than a set.

Thanks sweetie :hug: I like Blake but I really want Roger to do well in Cincy for a change

Sorry, you are right. It's just that Roger had been doing pretty well for about 1 1/2 years. So, to suggest he should win for a change is a bit silly. But I understand what you meant now :silly:

Roger's previous record has no bearing on what is going to happen tomorrow. He is a champion and will realize that his injury layoff has become a problem on two fronts - his #1 ranking is at risk and this is his only chance to get some practice time before the US Open.

We should really take this discussion into a separate thread since it has nothing to do with the original thread.

The defensive coverage of Nadal never ceases to amaze me. How many winners one need to hit before finishing the point, it must be depressing to play him.

I think that you need to go at the volley to beat him, unless you are tall (Safin?) and the top spin does not bother you much.

who said nadal does not know how to play on hartcourts? he will conquer the indoor and grass soon :bowdown: :haha: :woohoo:

Let´s try to be realistic, for those who know Nadal it was clear he would do well in hard court summer season, but indoors is his biggest weakness by far and I don´t expect him to do anything relevant there in next future. About grass, he will do well enough despite what people can think after this season.

Well I had other things on, but the fact that Puerta, Mathieu, Gaudio and Nadal were in the last 8 was funny enough.

Montreal and Miami are clay events, the world needs to be scared.

Carpet is faster than hard and indoors make it even faster. I think Shangai´s Cup will be played in Teraflex at indoors and I think it´s difficult to get any faster than that

Desert heat is so much better. I was thinking the other day that sitting in the stands in Cincy must be dreadful. I admire those fans. I'd take 100 degrees here in the desert over 100 in Cincy.

For instance, right now it's 102.0°F with a dewpoint of 63.0°. I think that would be pretty oppresive. Weather channel also says it's supposed to rain in Cincy today and tonight so there may not be any tennis played.

Cincinnati weather looks grim.
Today = thunderstorms 50% chance for precipitation
Tue = thunderstorms 50%
Wed = Sunny 20%
Thur = Scattered Thunderstorms 40%
Fri = Isolated Thunderstorms 30%
Sat = Scattered Thunderstorms 50%
Sun = Thundershowers (whatever them may be :lol: ) 30%

Well done for Nadal and congratulations for both. French Open Champion, two clay Masters, one hardcourt Masters now after he already made impressively the Miami final earlier this year. What an impressive year and that's true versatility what he is showing, something others have never achieved, let alone so early in their career :worship:

* He should thank Roger for not playing there
* Agassi had a day off
* Rain delay helped him today
* Montreal AMS has just been declared the 4th clay AMS bc Nadal is getting a worse thing for tennis than the greenhouse effect :lol:
Also don't forget the excuses that there's currently a lull in hardcourt tennis and that Hewitt also had to retire because of illness. You know, otherwise, an old man like Agassi or a claycourter like Nadal would never make it that far or win a title in this tournament *g* :lol:

Don't you mean MORE impressive? Yeah I think he took advantage of a weaker draw/field, but he certainly showed he's going to contend on hardcourts. I still think he has a way to go before he can be considered the favorite on hc (especially since he has yet to beat Roddick, Safin or Hewitt on the surface), but I still think winning a TMS is impressive no matter what.
