Well done JC! I knew this was your chance to beat Coria.

Having seen the match live, JC played pretty well and Coria was not at his best, but credit to him he did fight until the end. Coria was playing in Sopot on Saturday on clay so maybe it's not surprising he wasn't at his best on hardcourts so soon but JCF played really well and was able to hit through the wind a lot more than Coria.

Vamos JC

I wouldn't go as far as to say he was pathetic. He played really well at the end of the first set but he was making too many double faults. He tried until the end though.

From the bit of the match I saw, Coria was playing about as bad as I've ever seen him play! At times, it was just embarrasing and I could barely bring myself to watch it!

Really? I don't think it was fair to say he was embarrassing himself. He was not near his best but it wasn't the worst ever either.

Bravo Raquel for staying optimistic. ;)

Now their H2H is tied at 3-3 (2-2 on clay and 1-1 on hard), all matches being straight-set drubbings.

Hopefully Ferrero can get revenge on Ferrer for their Miami match... David isn't playing as well and isn't as confident as he was in the spring, so I like Juanqui's chances! Or perhaps I should remain pessimistic, that seems to work better.

I think JC has a good chance against Ferrer. This was the important one to get by first though, even if Coria was not at his best (although to be honest I wouldn't have cared if he had one hand tied behind his back and was on a drip, as long as JCF won). You stay pessimistic, I'll stay optimistic - it worked this time anyway ;)

I feel the same way. I don't care if Coria is on one leg, a win over him is always sweet. :D

I sure hope he can get revenge. I was at that Miami match and was pissed that I sat in the blazing hot sun for almost 3 hours to have Juanqui lose. :ras: (I know, I'm selfish).

Yeah, and didn't he blow the third set after being up a break, too? I'd be incredibly pissed. I'm fortunate that Ferrero has won both times I've seen him live.

I watched this match too, Coria played ultra pusher which worked in Aussie Open but here he got ***** by a JCF who played too clean and with too much pace. If Coria plays this kind of crap on hardcourts, I swear you couldn't pay me to ever watch a match of his again.

I am so pleased for J-C :) I watched the match on TV last night - he did play well, although it would be fair to say that Coria played worse than I have ever seen him play before, and made so many unforced errors (especially double faults), that J-C had it easier than he could ever have imagined. Still good luck to him for coming through this hard 1st round.

Nice win :yeah: Took his chances when he needed to played with controlled aggression, textbook style.

And GWH is right. It's time he strung a few matches together and with the draw opening up as it has been could be a very good opportunity to add some more points and push his ranking back up to get a good seeding for the U.S. Open.

Actually it reminds me of Safin/Ferrero before their last 2 matches. Before Hamburg or Paris, they had a very even, back-and-forth rivalry but all of their matches were routine straight-setters. Finally now they've had 2 in a row going beyond straight sets... so there is hope for Coria and Ferrero yet to build a compelling rivalry! :D
