No-shows among top players a growing problem

I do wish they'd leave Roger out of this. OK he's not playing in most of the tournaments leading up to the US Open, but then he never was scheduled to, other than the two TMS events. And Montreal, he's defending champ so with all those points to defend he certainly didn't pull out for no good reason. But these articles just lump him in with every one else and leave the impression he bailed on all these tournaments which isn't the case.

No-shows among top players a growing problem

SAN FRANCISCO — A virus has been spreading through the tennis community during the opening month of the US Open Series: withdrawalitis.

Just three weeks into the North American hardcourt season, a who's who of players has pulled out of events stretching from San Diego to Washington, D.C.

Stars who have left fans and tournament organizers out in the cold include Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Nearly half of the top 10 men and women have pulled out of summer tournaments and are suffering from injuries ranging from mild, such as Sharapova's back strain, to serious, such as Marat Safin's left knee.

"It's definitely not pleasant news for tournament directors and fans," says Raquel Giscafre, the owner and director of the Acura Classic in Carlsbad, Calif. The list of absentees there this week includes No. 1 Davenport, No. 2 Sharapova, former champ Henin-Hardenne and Williams. The $1.3 million event is the WTA Tour's only Tier I event all summer.

I'm not being paranoid. But he was never scheduled to play Indy, LA, DC, New Haven. His schedule was published well before this "reality series" ever started. And he didn't play these tournaments last year either. So it should be no surprise that he's not playing. If the media wants to have a go at someone go after the players that drop out at the last minute with some phoney injury that poof is gone a week later and you know they're just conserving their energy for the more important tournaments.

the article talks about the stars who are not participating in the tournies and with the exception of Sharapova and Safin doesnot state the reasons for any of them not going! If the articles piss you off so much then quit reading em.

How many players in the top 30 had Indy, LA and DC on their schedule? It's not like there's been a mass exodus of top players from these tournaments. The problem is the USTA is trying to promote a series where most of the top players, if they're not injured, only show up for a couple events - Montreal/Toronto & Cincy, and of course the US Open. They're either on holiday or playing clay court tournaments in Europe. Fed pretty much spends the entire month of July on a beach somewhere and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
