Tennis Canada, York finalize deal

(Jul 26) TORONTO (TC) – Tennis Canada has signed a long-term lease agreement with York University to build a new $35 million national tennis facility on the west part of the campus to be completed by May of 2004.

The proposed new tennis centre will feature a 12,500-plus Centre Court stadium, a 5,000-seat grandstand court, a 3,000-seat court one, and 12 outdoor courts with eight indoor courts for year-round development and community programs. The core 15-acre site will expand to more than 20 acres during the Canadian Open and will be the home of Tennis Canada and the Ontario Tennis Association.

The Centre Court stadium will have the ability to expand to a capacity of 14,500 and will feature comfortable seats with backs, arm rests, and drink holders as opposed to the bleachers used at the current facility. There will be 6,000 premium seats in the lower bowl and corporate suites overlooking the court, as well as tournament operations, training facilities and administrative offices housed in the stadium building.

"There are many challenges to overcome before this facility becomes a reality, but the agreement with York University is a huge step forward," said Bob Moffatt, president and chief executive officer of Tennis Canada. "The university is as convinced as we are that this facility will bring major benefits to the campus, the local community and the Province of Ontario.”

Tennis Canada is waiting for confirmation from the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario on their application for $10 million in funding from the SuperBuild program. An announcement could be made as early as next week when the Tennis Masters Canada tournament at York University is in full swing.
