MONTREAL (CP) - Marat Safin, ranked fourth in the world, has pulled out of the upcoming Rogers Cup tennis tournament to allow his injured left knee to heal.

Safin underwent minor surgery on the knee following Wimbledon and needs at least one more week of rest before he returns to competition, his agent told tournament officials Wednesday.

Last month, World No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament with a foot injury.

The tournament opens Saturday, with the main draw starting Monday.

not like he had a ton of pts to defend anyway after his pitiful loss to Kiwi last year...

I don't want him to miss the US Open!

I'm not sure from what week the seedings are determined, but wouldn't it be awesome is Safin was #4 and Roddick was #5. Another QF for Andy if that's the case...

Agassi has a better chance to take to take Montreal. No Fed, No Safin. The week off after his LA win was a very smart move.

He only has 38 points left to gain on the ATP 2005 race so he has no pressure in defending Cincy. He had 283 after Cincy last year and has 245 right now.
