Best 5-setter EVER ?

08-02-2005, 10:28 PM
Krickstein-Connors ? :tape:
Borg-McEnroe ? :)
Agassi-Rafter ?
Wilander-McEnroe

Other question : Which HUGE five setter do you wish you had the opportunity to see ? I wish I could have seen Philippoussis 20-18 win at Wimbledon a few years ago or McEnroe's win over Wilander.

Davydenko-Robredo at this year's RG was one that will live down the ages.

Either Edberg v Chang at the 92 US Open, or that 5hr31min marathon between Corretja and Hernan Gumy at RG one year, 98 I believe.

Yes, Borg vs McEnroe, the Wimbledon final 1980 was certainly one of the best five set matches ever. Alone the fourth set tiebreak which ended 20-18 to McEnroe was probably one of the best ever (hard to say).

However, there's plenty of room for other nominations, out of personal bias I always liked the Stich vs Muster Davis Cup match in 1994 on clay. Unfortunately it went the other way than I would have needed it, but it was still great tennis by both and dramatic until the end in the fifth set. Special Davis Cup tension between Germany and Austria, Muster doing a few clown moves and being the petulant ass that he could be (even more on home soil) and Stich, in contrary, being untouched by Muster's antics and acting like the coolest person ever did the rest to make it interesting enough for me.

Becker vs McEnroe in Davis Cup in Hartford also wasn't too shabby.

still... by far not the end of the list, I hope lots of other suggestions are coming...

I always wanted to see the Gilbert vs Stich US Open match (unfortunately Stich lost it again in five sets), going in a 5th set tiebreaker to Gilbert. Why? Because I would have found this match intriguing, I didn't see Gilbert so often play and it would have been against my favourite player from these days.

Also, again purely personal interest, I would have liked to see two other Stich five set matches:

Gustafsson vs Stich, Stuttgart outdoor 1993 (yes, you guessed right, Stich lost it again)

Krajicek vs Stich, Stuttgart indoor 1995 (yes... another final and another loss for Stich in five)

Todd Martin vs Carlos Moya 00 US Open 4th round. The 1st 2 sets were extremely long (over an hour) and could have gone either way. There were bad calls and Both players had missed opportunities, both sets went to tiebreakers and both were won by Moya. Martin came back and finally broke Moya in the 3rd, and destroyed Moya so much that he tanked the 3rd. 4th set was extremely close and went to another tiebreaker. Martin came through in the 5th to win 6-2 in a match that went past 1:00 AM. The match was filled with a ton of emotion and energy and the level of tennis was very high.

I've started watching tennis around 2002,

~ Roddick // Bracciali (Wimby 2R 2005)
~ Federer // Nadal (Miami Final 2005)

One of the best and most memorable 5 set matches was Sampras against Jim courier at the 1995 australian open . His poise and desire to win for his ill-fated coach was just uncanny and truly inspiriational for me to watch .

08-03-2005, 02:27 PM
Willy-Henman at Aussie Open 2004 as the best 5 setter I've watched.

Safin def Federer 05 AO sf - I can't imagine myself ever being more on edge for a match (that doesnt involve Lleyton, or Pat/Goran 01) than I was for this one....and the match just had such a great buildup...the unbeatable player against really the only guy with a legit chance of beating him. The fact that it took a whole bunch of mp's before Safin could finally close it out just made it all the more greater

Roddick def El Aynaoui 03 AO qf - not just because of that mammoth 5th set, but the quality of tennis was incredible, right from start to finish

Ivanisevic def Rafter 01 Wimby f - had me on edge more than any match I've seen...

Chang def Lendl 89 RG R16 - The Chang fightback, brutal cramps, fights through the pain and beats the worlds best...stands just outside the service box to receive Llendls 2nd serve on MP...unreal :)

Hewitt def Federer 03 DC - Federer up 2 sets to love and serving for the could I not put this one in? :)

Becker def McEnroe 87 DC - a truly great match made even greater by the DC atmosphere

Borg def McEnroe 80 Wimby f - the one and only

a few McEnroe/Connors ones too

theres a crapload I'm yet to see...

the best for me is Coria Nadal in Rome 2005, Awesome clay court battle :worship:

The memory cheats a little on the last one, Pam.

you'd think she'd have to be a Roddick fan for it to cheat her like that :)
