Well, what is the best match you've ever seen your favourite play?

08-01-2005, 07:08 PM
I don't remember seeing this thread hovering around here, so I decided to open it up and see what great memories you have to share.

The best I've seen Gonzo play was against JCF in Basel 02. The first two sets were OK, but the third... Gonzo was unplayable! Just so good! I actually remember him hitting a HUGE forehand return that landed right next to Ferrero, but he just couldn't do a thing, it was so fast.

For Taylor it's that annoying US Open match against Agassi, when he was hammering Andre but was forced to retire. Both matches these two guys played against each other (USO 03 and that 16-14 final set in the Bronze Medal match in Athens) were great too, especially that USO encounter, it was fantastic!

For Alex... Well, I don't actually remember a match in which he was actually brilliant all through-out :p
I guess it was one of his FO victories. I remember that LOOOONG encounter with Pavel. That was one hell of a clay-court match.

For Fed, it's just too damn hard to say. He played just BRILLIANTLY in Doha this season, simply the best I've ever seen him play. I saw all of his matches from there this season, and I guess the best was against Ljubicic in the final. Ivan just coulnd't get his enormous shots past him.

Sadly I have yet to see David's match against Hewitt at the DC semi final, though everyone who has seen it says it is the best they have ever seen him play. But of the ones I have been to live...................

David against Roddick in Basel semi-final 2003. He played brilliantly - despite having such a bad wrist injury he had to retire from the final the following day

David against Pavel - Munich Final 2005. To be frank it wasn't the best quality tennis I've ever seen David play - but after losing so many Finals it was so wonderful to be there live to see him actually win one! The fact it was my birthday made it even sweeter :)

For my other players -

Agustin Calleri - beating JC Ferrero in Malaga in the Spain/Argentina DC semi final in 2003 - Agustin was awesome - the best match he had ever played in his life (or probably ever will again!)

Marat Safin - beating Sampras so comprehensively in the 2000 US Open Final. I could only watch it on TV - but Marat was totally amazing and I don't think he has ever totally reached those dizzy heights since!

Gaston Gaudio - well it just has to be the (in)famous 2004 Roland Garros Final - the drama, the excitement - the sheer joy when he won the title :)

Murray vs Stepanek at Wimbledon 2005- Andy made me so happy that day. He destroyed a top 15 player, the start of his rise up the WR.

Agassi when he destroyed Schuettler in the AO final. A class above by some distance.

Canas coming back from the brink to stun Henman at the AO, I was disappointed for Tim but happy for Guillermo.

Guga beating Henman in Toronto 04, I enjoyed that match and Guga played some super tennis in that one.

Are we allowed to include more than one match? Anyway here goes.

Hmm... I find it hard to recall a match where Schalken started slamming winners all over the place and crushing his opponents by sheer talent alone. I suppose his first win over Kuerten back in TMS Paris in 2001, after losing their previous seven matches, was a great performance - Guga won the first set and then Schalken upped his level and was out-rallying him by the end. That was the same tournament where he got his sole victory over Roddick, in the round before, and seemed certain to make a TMS semi for the first time. Then he manages to blow a 6-2, 5-2 lead against Vinciguerra in a match that was one for the psychologists to explain.

I could also mention most of his matches against Clement.

Roddick vs. Federer 2004 wimbly final....

08-01-2005, 08:28 PM
I've seen Roddick play many better matches than that, and I'm hardly a fan.

08-01-2005, 08:29 PM
Yeah, some of his matches in the early rounds of the 04 USO were quite good. He was untouchable against Canas especially.

08-01-2005, 08:34 PM
He was in frighteningly good form, making Canas and Nadal look complete featherweights, but in hindsight beating up on them plus regular bitch Robredo was poor preparation for the bombs of Johansson the Younger in the quarters.

His first win over Agassi at Queens, a couple of his matches at Wimbledon that year, a lot of them from the hardcourt summer where he had his 19-match winning streak. Ironically, in terms of quality of performance, that doesn't include his two most important wins in that streak: Federer in Montreal and Nalbandian at the USO. Those were battles won on mental strength, not on superb tennis.

08-01-2005, 08:45 PM
Gaudio is maybe not in my favourite top 5, but I enjoyed it last year when he outplayed Hewitt in Roland Garros.

His match against JCF in the USO final comes to mind.

I don't know if it was his best (because he lost  ) but the most memorable match with McEnroe that I can remember was the one against Lendl (1984 Roland Garros Final). Mind you, I was hiding behind my chair quite often when the tension got too high.

Recently, Nadal vs Coria in Rome 2005 (also not that good for the nerves but fun to watch)
Nadal vs Puerta RG Final 2005

Another match I enjoyed watching was Ferrero vs Nadal (Barcelona, I think) but that was more because one of the French commentators was simply fantastic. :worship: Comments on strategy, psychology, mind games,...very technical comments on various shots and the build-up to the shots.

08-02-2005, 03:35 PM
Marat against Hewitt at the 2002 Hamburg Masters Series event.
It lasted just 54 minutes and to me it looked like Marat played some perfect tennis there (I was live at the match).
Hewitt was outplayed time after time and didn´t have a chance at all.
I don´t know how it looked on tv, but he played some amazing tennis there :worship:

08-03-2005, 08:38 AM

Gaudio schooling Hewitt at RG in 04
Muster bitchslapping Agassi in DC
Calleri beating the crap out of Ferrero in Malaga.
Gonzo over Hewitt in Hamburg, where he won the 1st and 3rd set 6-0 6-1
The last 3 sets of Acasuso over Roddick at RG.

Now it's gonna be maybe a bit historical for some of you, but I found some old matches that I really enjoyed. I'm gonna put them chronological, so there is no valuation in that:

1. Edberg vs Mecir Wimbledon SF 1988. Edberg was down in that match 4-6, 2-6 and 1-4 and managed to turn it around to win the last three sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

2. Lendl vs Chang RG 4th Round 1989. Chang was a boy of 17 years, he was down 3-6, 3-6, won the next two sets both by 6-2 and in the 5th set he started to get cramps. He couldn't sit on his chair anymore, in one moment he even served from down (he didn't put the arms over the head). Lendl was so confused about that that he lost the match.

3. Sampras vs Courier AO QF 1995: It was a brilliant match, when suddenly a spectator shouted to Pete: "Do it for Tim!" This spectator was thinking of Tim Gullikson, Pete's coach, who was short before the tournament diagnosed with brain cancer. Pete heard that and instantly started to cry on the court. He continued playing, but for minutes simply couldn't stop crying. Courier even asked Pete in a moment: "Should we have a break?" only that Pete can calm down again, but Pete rejected. And in the end Pete won that match.

4. El Aynaoui vs Roddick AO QF 2003: Everybody I talk to about it says it was a brilliant match. Now it's gone since then 2 1/2 years and I still didn't have the opportunity to watch that match......I had to work that morning, when it was going on. :bigcry: I want to watch that match!!!

5. Federer-Safin AO SF 2005: For me this is the best match of the year so far.

Agassi def. Sampras, AO 2000 Semifinal

He outlasted an in-form Sampras in a very tough, high-quality match with few unforced errors.

Agassi def. Lee, AO2003 2nd round, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. that was scary

08-05-2005, 06:40 PM
Nadal: Against Federer this year at Roland Garros . :)

Jonas Björkman: Davis Cup, 2004. df Mark Philippoussis 75 62 62. I cried after this match. A LOT. He sealed victory for the Swedes! It helped that Mark didn't play to the level I expected, but nothing should be taken from this victory. Outstanding.
Jürgen Melzer: Aus Open 2005 Melzer/Waske df Knowle/Nestor. Any 2005AO doubles match, I suppose.
Alexander Popp: Not a hard choice. Wimbledon 2005 df Arthurs 63 67 36 76 14 12
Jarkko Nieminen: Aus Open, 2003 df Kafelnikov 63 63 36 46 61

Lot of Andre's matches with his "come backs"

But very recent one: two final games vs Muller in LA

He came back from 0-40 (muller's serve)!!! and then won 7-5!

:wavey: Andre Agassi forever :wavey:

08-07-2005, 01:07 PM
Ditto what I said to Fumus earlier in this thread,

Ok I suppose you mean that you've seen Rafael playing better matches.
That could be true, since he's my favorite for just a couple of months, actually since RG 2005, and before that I didn't watch him that often.
For me it also is important that this match was against Federer, who always makes it very dificult for his opponents. Ánd it was the first Roland Garros he played. Al those things together makes it (one of) the best match(es) I've seen him play .
