i wonder how moya will do on hardcourt!!!! He is not serving that fast anymore and on hardcourt players with a serve above the 200km/h have a lot of advantage!!! I do hope moya can place his serves very sharp and deep, without speed!!!!

I do hope moya can place his serves very sharp and deep, without speed!!!!I noticed the same thing - since estoril - his serve is damaged the most - I remember this year's Monte Carlo (match against Puerta - though he lost - he played well) where Moya hit 11 aces but since then, his serve has lost pace to an enormous extent - but he is a professional - he knows how much of importance a deep sharp & smashin SERVE is in the game of tennis - so he is gonna work & improve on that InshaAllah!!! - lets hope

HEY!

about he game change 2day my coach said me that at his age carlos, about 30, all players start to have desgast injuries. and carlos has been a strong server and his right shoulder are a "bit tired". and it's normal that he changes his game for continue playing.

i think that soon he'll have more phisically injuries for the desagst of his body. carlos must accept this handicap and improve to play different for his health

Carlos will face Mariusz Fyrstenberg, from Poland.
Head to Head : 0-0

[From the Sopot Website]

Moya Arrives

One of the world's most popular tennis players, Carlos Moya has landed in the Tri-city a few minutes past 4pm. He will face Poland's Mariusz Fyrstenberg in his first round match tomorrow. He will be practicing o the courts of SKT later today.

The 190cm tall and weighing in at 86kg Spaniard has won the French Open in 1998 and was the world's number 1 for a couple of weeks in 1999. Carlos is presently ranked 20th in the Entry System and 22nd in the Champions Race.

A powerful forehand is Moya's favorite shot. He also anticipates his opponents very well. He is a close friend and hitting partner of Rafael Nadal, who has been Carlos' prodigy since an early age.

Moya has earned over $11 million in various tournaments over the course of his career. The Spaniard is considered one of the most handsome tennis players and stars in many commercials and product endorsements, which are a big part of his revenue. He was ranked one of the world's 50 most beautiful people by "People" magazine in 1999.

Moya survives a night thriller

It was cold, late in the evening but Carlos Moya and Mariusz Fyrstenberg made the athmosphere on a Sopot's court really hot. It was efinitely the best and most exciting match of the tournament and winner was not known till the last ball.

Polish qualifier Mariusz Fyrstenberg was known just from doubles some far, in what he had some bigger successes with compatriot Marcin Matkowski. But now he is trying to pay more attention and try himself also in singles, which we see is going pretty well. After today's match he said at first it was a little bit hard because the court was too big, net too high but everything is to get used to.

Match started equally, for the whole first set players were going hand in hand so it is not suprising it finished with a tiebreak. Moya got one mini break and took the advantage first, leading 4-2 but Fyrstenberg didn't got scared and not only made the score equal but won it 7-5.

Second set was like everybody, besides Sopot's crowd, expected dominated by Moya. Spaniard got an early break, Fyrstenberg maybe felt a bit off and this way Moya kept the score with one break till the end and won the set 6-3.

Emotions were the highest in the last, most dramatic set. When Moya got break at the begining it seemed everything will go to one gate from this time like in previous set but with a little bit fight and luck Polish broke back to 2-2. It gave him huge mental power. In next games he was hitting the ball like inspired, forcing usually atacking Moya to deep defense. Two times it was 0-30 on Moya's serve but the experience was helping to win the games at the end. At the same time Fyrstenberg was winning his serve without problems. The longest game of the match which lasted surely more than 15 minutes was deciding. We saw many action s on highest tennis level, Fyrstenberg showed his good tough at the net and played few balls which really deserved to be admired. He defended two break point and had many advantages to go up to 6-5. Moya was cool though and showed fabulous passing shots.
It finished with more famous player's win. Moya was serving for the match, Fyrstenberg defended a match point and fought a break point. 'Never hit drop shot at important moments', an old tennis rule was true this time because Mariusz lost his last chance this way. Moya won the match 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. And he can forget about some very doubtful line calls against him...

Fourth seeded Carlos Moya overcame Poland's Mariusz Fyrstenberg in a thrilling match 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5 after 2 hours, 27 minutes. Moya, a finalist in Umag last week, scored the only break of the second set in the fourth game. In final set, Moya got the decisive break in the eleventh game which went eight times over deuce. The Spaniard won the match on his second match point with an ace.

Moya: “This was a very difficult match coming from last week in Umag where the conditions were completely different. I knew that Fyrstenberg was an excellent doubles player, but today I saw that he also plays very well in singles. It was a difficult match for me, playing against a lefty and still being a little bit tired after the final on Sunday.”

About being an ambassador for UNICEF: “I'm proud to be part of the partnership between the ATP and UNICEF. ACE is a great project and it's important to care about what's happening around the world.”

"I was lucky today and won the match" - said Carlos Moya at his press conference. The Spaniard was very happy with his win, because it really was difficult. Moya also had a few warm wards for the Fans here in Sopot.

"It is understandable that they were rooting for their player, but they were never disrespectful towards me" - stated Moya.

Carlos, who is considered one of the favorites to win here in Sopot praised the Polish player: "My opponent is one of the world's best doubles players, he does not play a lot of singles, so I did not know what to expect" - he explained.

When asked about his strategy for the rest of the tournament Moya said: "I have to raise my level of play if I want to win here. I am considered one of the favorites but I try to focus on one match at a time. There are many favorites: Coria, Costa and many others."

Moya sent home by Starace!

This is not the end of suprises in Sopot. After Mariano Puerta loss, another big favourite Carlos Moya was sent home. The father of the suprise was Italian Potito Starace. Very high (193 cm) 24 yeasr old Starace in now No. 94 in the ranking. In his last topurnament he didn't make anything bigger, in Stuttgart lost to Robredo in second round and in Umag to David Ferrer in his first match.

Carlos Moya already was struggling in the first round with Mariusz Fyrstenberg, with who he had to play three dramatic sets and was very close to lose. This time it seemed it will be completely different. The first set showed huge domination of Spaniard. Starace seemed a bit scared of the famous opponent and his first serve was almost always not in. Moya didn'y have to do anything special to win the set 6-2.

Second set in another story. Starace opebned himself a little bit and started to play harder and more brave. Moya was missing some easy balls. In the end the set finished with tiebreak. Very quickly Styarace took a huge lead. He won bopth first Moya's serves. Spaniard tried to win something there but even in a rally he was playing confident and well he lacked some luck and the ball stucked at the net. In a result Italian won the last game 7-0.

Third set was similar as second. Moya was hitting many drop shots, which was smart, as high Italian could not run forward so well. At 5-4 Moya had a match point but Starace defended himself. At 5-5 he got a break point and didn't have to do anything vecause Spaniard made a double fault (called by the chair umpire). In teh next game moya was looking at this mark few times, making it guilty. But Starace quickly went up 40-0. Moya defended first match point with a great winner but couldn't defend a strong shot sent by Starace and lost 6-2, 6-7, 5-7.

it was a close match, both could win, and it wasn't moya....too bad
but we must be happy he is healthy again and let us hope he will win some matches in the hardcourtseason.
some points to defend in cincinatti: reached the quart final last year and us open the third round: not so spectacular.
So he can go there playing without any pressure.
and he will have recieved 34 birthdaycards and some letters!!! so isn't that a big drug for him. The adrenaline will go through his body and give him force, speed and creativity in his game (I hope)
