Soderling has a fan! How exciting! Hurley and I were convinced that we were the only ones paying him any attention at Wimbledon.

Sorry I can't help you out with the pics, though!

Just a random question. Does the guy comb his hair? In the few pictures of him I've seen, I don't think he does.

Nice to see that there are a few people around who are taking notice of Soderling :)

I've only seen him play a couple of times, this year v. Henman and at last year's US Open where he gave Rios a storming run for his money for about a set and a half as I recall. I was dead impressed with him that day and marked him down as a youngster to watch, but I don't seem to have heard much about him since.

How's he been doing?

Robin just beat Scott Draper in Shanghai (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) to reach the semis. I've been keeping an eye out for him too since his match with Henman at Wimbledon, this must be his best ATP run yet. Hurray!

I'm glad you like him!! I've been following him for a couple of years now. He had a nice little debut at the Stockholm Open and that's when he caught my eye even though I had been seeing his name in the juniors.

This is a great result for him and I hope it doesn't end here. :)

I didn't see the match with Philippoussis, but from the reports, Robin did manage to break his serve twice and only lost 4 and 4. That's pretty good, especially considering Jiri Novak only got 3 games from Flipper in the final.

Think we'll be seeing quite a lot more of Robin soon (tough draw in Japan though). And up to number 78 in the rankings this morning!

Hi Sara, you've gotta be one of the biggest Robin fans for sure! (Its Kristen... from the soderling site) I'm pretty sure Mikhail has the best gallery of Robin. Well, of those I've seen. And I look for heaps of Swedish info for my group!

I'm a bit sad about Jonas, but Robin is so good (dammit!) :hatoff:
It's so annoying when you know your guy is good... but the opponent is just on fire :awww: lately

Ah well, Robin will do well in the semi final. He's pushed Philippoussis to 6-4 6-4, and beaten many of the other guys, so lets hope he does it again! :yeah:

Vilken svensk tennis-knall!
Svensken Robin Söderling - oseedad - slog i morse ut fjolårsfinalisten Rainer Schuettler, Tyskland.

I nästa omgång väntar Nicolas Escude.

I nästa omgång får Enqvist möta lovande slovaken Karol Beck.

I just got home like about 5 minutes ago!

Robin won!! Robin won!! Robin won!!

And I saw him beat the evil Ivan.

I was so cold... didn't think to bring a wrap because it had been so bloody hot every other day, and when Robin was down 5-2 in the tiebreak I was thinking that maybe I would have to go home anyway, and then he won! he won! he won!

He played just great. He was going for the lines and for his serves and it was great.

And afterward I told him good luck in the tournament and others too were complimenting him on the match, and he just said thank you in a very soft voice.

But during the match he was really fired up and even mad a couple of times at the line calls, and he was talking to himself and to his coach a lot too.

Well, I don't know about "a lot of people" :)

A few people were wishing him well. One person spoke to him in Swedish and another told him it was a beautiful match and I said good luck in the tournament. lol... that was it.

Most of the people at the match were cheering for Ivan. Aparrently there are more croatians in SoCal than Swedes. :)

"In the men's doubles draw, the Israeli No. 8 seeds will start with a relatively easy match against Thomas Enqvist and Robin Soderling. Although the Swedes are talented in their own right, they are not accomplished on the doubles circuit. Soderling, 20, won the first ATP level doubles match of his career earlier this year and is ranked 323 by the ATP. Enqvist, once ranked fourth in the world in singles, has not played an ATP level doubles match this year and is ranked 577."

I hate this! I would much rather that they could enter Robin with Landsberg, someone he's played with before. Or, Aspelin even!? These guys know how to play doubles, and while Enqvist is good in the singles, I'd prefer to see one of the specialists there.

Here is a news about the Soderling-Gonzalez match ;) :

Gonzalez Pays Price For Gold In Opening-Round Open Loss
By Richard Pagliaro
09/01/2004

Careening rapidly to his left in a desperate dash, Fernando Gonzalez crashed into the blue wall near the scoreboard retrieving a shot from Robin Soderling's racquet. Standing in front of the net awaiting the arrival of the inevitable lob, Soderling snapped off an overhead into the opposite corner and Gonzalez could only toss his racquet in vain toward the ball that bounced away taking his U.S. Open hopes with it.

It was that type of day for the 14th-seeded Chilean. Soderling spent much of the match driving Gonzalez up the wall, frustrating him into losing his grip and ultimately putting this U.S. Open opening round match of out reach with a 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 6-1 victory.

It was Soderling's second victory over Gonzalez in as many matches and followed a similar script to his 7-6, 6-3 win over Gonzalez in the quarterfinals of Marseille: Soderling countered Gonzalez's baseline blasts with consistent depth and pace on his shots.

"I'm really happy that I won today," Soderling said. "It's a pretty good feeling to be up 2-0 against a player who is as good as he is."

A vocal contingent of Chilean fans chanting "Chile! Chile!" in sing-song voices supplied plenty of spirit, but could not coax life into Gonzalez's weary legs drained from an arduous Athens Olympic experience that would have caused Atlas cramps. In the span of 48 hours in Athens, Gonzalez, sustained a twisted ankle during his three-set semifinal setback to Mardy Fish, scored a 6-4, 2-6, 16-14 triumph over Taylor Dent to claim the bronze medal and give Chile its first medal of the Athens Olympic Games and returned to the court with Nicolas Massu in a five-set marathon match that saw the Chileans save match points in the fourth-set tiebreak to defeat Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler and claim the first Olympic gold medal in their country's history.

Stretching his legs out in front of him in the post-match interview, Gonzalez, who was scheduled to conclude today's day session on Court 7 playing doubles with Massu against former chain-smoker Karsten Braasch and Sargis Sargsian, looked like a man in dire need of a massage and extended nap, after enduring perhaps the most demanding three-week stretch of tennis in his career. Carefully selecting his words, Gonzalez declined to use fatigue as an excuse for the loss.

"I was really trying to hit the ball solid, but it just didn't move too much," Gonzalez said. "You never know (how much fatigue contributed to the loss). When you lose, you try to find excuses, but there are none that I like. Today was not a good day for me and he played well."

If sacrificing his shot at the U.S. Open was the cost of an Olympic medal, Gonzalez spoke like a man who was satisfied to pay such a price.

"The Olympics come once every four years so you have to play for your country," Gonzalez said. "The Olympics are very important."

The 20-year-old Soderling could sense the general weariness in his opponent ?and took advantage by forcing Gonzalez to come up with something special to beat him in baseline rallies.

"It (the fatigue factor) is so different from player-to-player and how they react so maybe he's not physically tired, but for sure he's mentally tired," Soderling said. "He played a lot of matches ?singles and doubles ?at the Olympics and they were all long matches so I think you would have to be a little bit mentally tired."

A 2002 U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Gonzalez delivers the type of crushing strokes that threaten to contort the shape of the ball with each vicious swing. But the hard-hitting Chilean could not summon the consistency necessary to combat Soderling, who rarely looks rushed in delivering the sound strokes that follow in the smooth-swinging Swedish tradition.

"This is a good tournament for me," Gonzalez said. "I've played good tennis here. It's disappointing. But some days you cannot play the way you want to play. It is not physically possible."

Stylistically, Gonzalez and Soderling are as similar as a Metallica and a mime. In the second-set tiebreak, Gonzalez's tendency to go to extremes cost him the set. Whaling a wild forehand returned well wide from the ad side, Gonzalez misfired another forehand return wide from the deuce side then crushed a crosscourt forehand wide to trail 1-5. Two points later, Gonzalez blasted the most impressive shot of the match ?a running forehand pass from seven feet behind the baseline to save one set point, but it was a brief reprieve as another errant forehand flew wide to give Soderling the set.

"He's a tough player to play against," said Soderling. "He can do some really bad games and then he will play very well for some games. He's a tough player to play against because he is pretty unpredictable. But his game suits me because he hits the ball hard and I like that. I always play good against him."

Soderling's serve set the tone for the fourth set. He won 11 of 14 first-serve points and did not face a break point to seal the match and set up a second-round meeting with Russian Nikolay Davydenko, who led Mark Philippoussis, 1-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5),4-1 when the 2003 Wimbledon finalist retired.

"We've practiced together before and we play a pretty similar game so it should be a good match," Soderling said. "I like this tournament because I play my best tennis on hard courts. It's probably my favorite (major). If I play my best tennis, I can beat anyone in this tournament, but I know I can also lose to anyone in this tournament as well. The Chilean chants did not faze Soderling ?"the fans were very fair; they were loud but they did not cheer my double faults or anything like that," Soderling said ?and he's happy to hear the Swedish sounds in the locker room as Soderling joined compatriots Thomas Enqvist, 28th-seeded Joachim Johansson and former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson in the second round.

"It's nice to be able to speak Swedish in the locker room for a couple of more days," Soderling said with a smile. "

My new love Tilda has helped me play this good!”

*He is Sweden’s new tennis idol, 19 year old Robin Söderling from Tibro – the guy who makes us talk about future instead of history.
- Bigger future hope was a long time we had, said DC captain, Mats Wilander.
Robin had 2-0 in the decision sets tiebreak and “Kungliga Hallen” was boiling. Five more pints and he would have been tribute as the youngest Stockholm Open winner in all times. It was that close.
- It feels heavily, but at the same time I’m happy that it went that good. I just got in the tournament with a wildcard, so I can tell you I’m a little proud of my success, Robin laughs, and tells us:
- Yes, love has helped me. It is that for I’ve played this good. I am in love with a wonderful girl since a month back.
- Her name is Tilda Rosén and she is 17 years old. She comes from Stockholm and studies at high school.
- We met at a party; one of the few moments I had time to do things other than play tennis actually.
Do you play tennis together?
- No! She refuses. She looks at me, but I can’t get her to hold in a racket...
Robin turned pro 2001 and has already earned 310 000 dollar, that would be about 2,4 milions Swedish kronors. Not too bad for a guy who, - for so long only is ranked as the 108 best player.
- What I do with the money? What’s left over after I’ve payed tax I put in a bank.
Have you thought about moving to Monte Carlo?
-Not yet, I really like here at home, but the taxes are so high so we’ll see.
With his extremely will Robin does everything do reach the top. He even practice at Christmas eve.
-You have to practice very much to reach succsess. That’s what I’ve learnt.
Aren’t you afraid to be distracted by the beautiful Tilda?
-On the contrary, She inspires me, assure Robin.

Soderling Takes Lead in Inaugural Tennis-X Euro Series

Swede Robin Soderling, unseeded in play last week at the ATP stop in Lyon, finds himself atop the standings of the inaugural Tennis-X Euro Series after claiming his career-first ATP title.

"I didn't know what it was like to win a tournament and I almost cried when I realized it was over," said Soderling, who was also expected to shed more tears upon realizing he topped the Euro Series.

In its first week the Tennis-X.com Euro Series was hailed by fans, players, and industry executives alike.

"It is the tennis fan who will likely benefit the most through greater exposure on television for tennis, for ATP players and for ATP tournaments," said ATP CEO Mark Miles, here actually talking about the US Open Series.

"I'll have to agree with Mark," said Tennis-X CEO Luke Johnson. "The Euro Series brings the spotlight on the European indoor events leading to the year-ending Masters Cup. It's a slam dunk. Each day I manually calculate who is leading the standings, purely out of interest, sometimes out of boredom. Sometimes I'll put on my Andy Roddick matching shirt and hat before I do it, or my Roger Federer headband...I don't have a whole lot to do around here."

In second place in a prime position for Euro Series cash is Belgian Xavier "X-Man" Malisse, the Lyon runner-up, while tied for third are Lyon semifinalists Vince "Vincenzo" Spadea of the U.S. and Spain's Dave Ferrer.

"I'm going to Metz, Madrid, Stockholm, and qualies for Paris. Still a lot of tennis left after a week like this," said Malisse, here not referring to his hopes of staying near the top of the Euro Series standings. "I think I'm in the main draw in Madrid so that will be the priority and then we'll see."

The 2004 Tennis-X Euro Series is a historic achievement in men's tennis that links the nine men's European indoor tournaments after the US Open leading to the year-ending Masters Cup, creating a cohesive, five-week European indoor season. Players will be competing for bonus prize money to be awarded at the end of the Euro Series and more importantly, the honor that goes with being crowned the Euro Series champion.

Three events will be added to the Euro Series standings this week in the BA-CA Tennis Trophy (Vienna, Austria), the Open de Maselle (Metz, France), and the Kremlin Cup (Moscow, Russia). Other remaining events are the Masters Series-Madrid (Spain), the Davidoff Swiss Indoors (Basel, Switzerland), the if...Stockholm Open (Sweden), the St. Petersburg Open (Russia), and the Masters Series-Paris (France), all leading to the season-ending Masters Cup in Houston.

For more info on the Euro Series or to check the standings, point your browser toward www.tennis-x.com.

Tennis: Third time lucky as Soderling claims first title in Lyon

LYON, France : Sweden's Robin Soderling claimed his first ATP title with a three sets win over Belgian Xavier Malisse at the 791,750-euro ATP tournament here.

The 20-year-old from Gothenburg clinched the title in his third final appearance 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 against Malisse who had also been bidding for his first career title in south eastern France.

"This is a great day for me," said Soderling. "I have dreamt of this for a long time.

"In the second set today, Malisse returned well and put me under pressure but I have been serving well all week and that allowed me to stay confident."

The towering Swede, a hardcourt specialist, got off to a flying start winning three games to love, conceding just two points on his serve before wrapping up the first set in 25 minutes.

A dip in form in the second set allowed Malisse back into the game and the Belgian raced to a 4-0 lead before taking the set 6-3.

But Soderling upped the momentum in the third and made a crucial break in the fifth game for 3-2 before claiming the title after 1hr 24min on court, to make up for his previous losses in Stockholm last year and Marseille in February.

It was a bitter blow for 24-year-old Malisse who suffered his sixth loss in a final, including two this year.

Soderling, 53rd ranked, beat Malisse, who is ranked one place above him in 52nd, in their only previous meeting in Scottsdale earlier this year

Here's an article from the Stockholm Open site. it has some quotes from Söderling.

Impressive week by Söderling

Robin Söderling captured his first ATP title ever in Lyon on Sunday. The 20 year-old Swede defeated fellow if… Stockholm open player, Xavier Malisse, in the final and is looking forward to playing in Stockholm.

- if… Stockholm Open is a very important tournament for me and I will enjoy playing on home soil a lot. Hopefully I can play as good as I did last year, but it’s going to be immensely tough, as the line-up is so good, told Söderling after his victory in Lyon.

The young Swede had a breakthrough at the if… Stockholm Open last year, when he reached the final, which he lost by the narrowest of margins to Mardy Fish. In February he lost another close battle in Marseille, before finally getting his revenge on Sunday as he prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 against Malisse.

Söderling hit several winners from the baseline throughout the match, but looked to be in trouble when he double faulted at 5-4, 30-15 in the final set.

- I was so nervous in the end. When I double faulted in the last game, I could hardly put any pace to my second serve, Söderling confessed afterwards.

This week the tour moves on to Moscow, Vienna and Metz. Söderling will play in the Russian capital, just like his compatriots Jonas Björkman, Joachim Johansson and Thomas Johansson. Last week, Thomas Johansson reached the third round in Tokyo, while Björkman and Joachim Johansson advanced to the quarterfinals in Lyon. The latter has a fantastic 38-6 record indoors since last autumn, but was defeated by Söderling in the quaterfinals in Lyon.

Hey Robin!!!
Congratulations on your first tournament win!
But could you please not party so hard next time?
Even if you only have to play Volandri 3 days later!
Volandri had a 0-10 record on carpet,
so should have been a cupcake for you.
And if you pay out 1.3,
some people think that's a good deal,
and put some money on you.
Those people are very happy when you have two MP's
in the third set tie break.
And are not so happy
when you lose the next 4 points.
You're a great player,
but not today!
Definitely not today.

Sorry, Soderling fans. Had to get that of my chest. I feel better now!

Robin was leading 5:2 in the first set, but then unfortunately Nalbandian came back.
In the tie break of the 1st set, it was very unfair, because a Nalbandian fan was doing a noise during Robins 2nd serve when David had setball, so I guess this is why Robin lost the 1st set and also the whole match.

Better luck for Stockholm Robin!

What is jumpers knee?

The patella tendon (or ligament as it is sometimes called) connects the kneecap to tibia bone. Under extreme stresses such as those involved in jumping a partial rupture can occur. This can often lead to inflammation and degeneration of the tissue. Inflammation can also result from overuse. Injury to this often affects athletes involved in jumping or throwing sports. Weight lifters, Tennis and Badminton players can also be affected. Rest in the early stages is important

What are the symptoms?

Pain at the bottom of the kneecap especially when pressing in.
Aching and stiffness after exertion.
Pain when you contract the quadriceps muscles.

Grade 1: Pain only after training

Continue training but apply ice or cold therapy to the injury after each training session.
Wear a heat retainer or support.
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation. An eccentric strengthening programme is generally recommended

Grade 2: Pain before and after exercise but pain reduces once warmed up.

Modify training activities to reduce the load on the tendon. Stop jumping or sprinting activities and replace them with steady running or swimming / running in water if necessary.
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation.
Grade 3: Pain during activity which prevents you from training / performing at your best.

Rest completely from the aggravating activity. Replace it with swimming / running in water (if pain allows).
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation.

Image shows a partial rupture to the patella ligament.

Sports massage can be effective for chronic tendinitis.

Which strengthening techniques have been shown to stimulate healing of Jumpers Knee?

Grade 4: Pain during every day activities which may or may not be getting worse.
Rest for a long period of time (at least 3 months!).
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation.
If the knee does not respond to rehabilitation then consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon as surgery may be required.

A Sports Injury Specialist or Doctor could:

Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication e.g. ibuprofen.
Use ultrasound or laser treatment.
Use cross friction massage techniques.
Prescribe and supervise a full rehabilitation programme.
A Surgeon can operate.

??? Robin can win 1st Round vs Dent, then vs Nalbandian....David is playing so much at the moment, maybe he is tired and Robin nearly won the 1st set last week vs him. So everything is possible!
