The INCREDIBLE 42-match losing streak of Josh Olivas!

vogus

I had noticed that this American player seemed to be losing a lot, so i looked up his results on the ITF site and he has lost 42 matches in a row, dating back nearly two years to September '03. Of the EIGHTY-FIVE sets Olivas has played in this stretch, he has won only ONE, and he has lost 53 of his sets by a 6-0 or 6-1 count. His career match record is 6 wins and 90 losses. Olivas's streak is on the line today in Washington qualies against Damisa Robinson of Nigeria, let's hope he has some luck and finally picks up a win.

I don't think that Tennis is the thing for that guy, so he should make sure that his losses get him a place in the ATP hall of Fame :tape:then retire and do something else worth it:p

He's gotten a lot of wild cards into various South American events (I smell bullshit!), he's qualified for a future's event where he didn't even win a match, but he got a bye instead straight into the main draw. Shit like this.

It's the Amadeus-Fulford Jones / Kyle Doppelt syndrome.

yeah i noticed this as well, Olivas had at least two maindraw (!) wildcards for 25K challengers in Ecuador, do you suppose he paid the tournament directors money for those WCs or smth like that?

Matschke started his career with 27 losses in a row and few weeks ago we talked to him and he said he started new serie and is going to beat his own record and then beat Josh's record
Only way to Josh to prevent this is to buy a WC to the tournament, then buy concrete place in draw and play with Johan.
But we'll notify Johan any way :p

Haha, I was there at the time too, and I also missed out on this living legend, as I was watching Kiwi and Rusedski practicing at the time. I did, however, watch Damiisa Robinson lose his next match, he wasn't anything special. Robinson is from DC and played collegiately at Clemson.

I'm at work, but I might be able to load the pics today. Anyway, about his game, he has an ok serve, not a lot of pace on it but gets it in. Forehand is a bit too loopy, although he is consistent with it. The backhand is what really sets him apart in terms of greatness. Everytime he hit it I had to hold back from laughing - he hits these little two handed dinks right into the center of the court every time. And he is awful at the net, mostly stayed back. He is a fighter though

And the guy he lost to, Philip Hammer, is certainly nothing special, and got beaten easily in the next round.

Looking at his recent activity, it appears that he sadly failed to secure himself a spot in the south american challenger circuit and has fallen out of the ATP rankings. But the year cannot be considered a total loss (despite taking only one game off of an unranked 38 year-old guy at Aptos), as he has managed to pull off a resounding victory in the first round of qualifying at UK F2 Futures. We can only hope these memories will inspire greater victories next year.

ATP Challenger and tour events are a little different from the open door policy of Futures and Saties.

Strictly speaking, it is up to the on site supervisor to allow/disallow non ranked players into the qualie draw. Even for a player without a point, it helps if that player is already in the ATP database for identification purposes.

Ironically, playing Challenger qualies costs less than playing Futures qualies
($30) and the Challenger entry fee is deducted from any prize money earned, whereas with Futures and Saties, you have to pay upfront.

Furthermore, with the new iPIN system in place for Futures and Saties (but not ATP events), players have to pay an annual registration cost.

Getting back to the supervisor's discretion : the only time I saw non ranked players turned away was a shameful episode at Waikoloa that even had the then rookie Peter Luczak up in arms. There were players who had flown from the mainland who were turned away as well as ALL the foreign players attending college in Hawaii. IIRC only one local collegiate player, an American, was let in. Meanwhile some of the local wild cards were truly laughable.

It is important to bear in mind that there are plenty of very good players out there, playing club and/or money tournaments, that have no points. Guys who could actually compete in the weaker Challengers.
