I love Rafael!
He's arguably the cutest player on tour right now!

Glenn
07-01-2003, 01:28 PM
Oh and he's a good player of course...

Chloe le Bopper
07-01-2003, 02:58 PM
lol... Well there is a pretty good site about him growing. You should check it out: www.rafaelnadal.com Lots of articles and information there :)

Chloe le Bopper

He plays his first match at the Spanish Nationals this Tuesday night, against Luis Perez.

Anyhow Glenn, if your a fan, you should check out his interview after he beat Moya. It's on Real Player, and it's kind of funny. He takes a full minute to get the hell off his cell phone before he goes to talk to the press, lol. Go here: http://www.root3dtb.de/masters2003/ and go down to 14.05.2003 and click on his name in the far right column.

Glenn
07-01-2003, 07:06 PM
I've visited that site so much already, and your group also, it's awesome!
@shirtless pics.

OK I'll check out that interview now! :)

LOL, he looks so bored, and the faces he makes are hilarious.
But pfff@the media, they ask such boring questions.

But pfff@the media, they ask such boring questions.
That was what amused me - the faces. Pretty funny stuff. He looked like he might chew his face off at one point. I couldn't decide if he had a twitch, or was just restless.

You should post in my group sometimes, we could use the company :D

Let's demand our own forum for Rafi! :D

Which name?
How about Pre-Nadal Care? :D

Chloe le Bopper
07-03-2003, 04:05 AM
Pre-Nadal Care? Oh lord, that is just wrong on so many levels :o It is rather funny though ;) I'm fond of "the fetus" myself

Rafel has won through his first two matches at the Spanish nationals, btw, and will play Robredo tomorrow night :wavey:

Chloe le Bopper

Well there aren't all that many to choose from. Most of them are action shots, where he makes awful faces and they decide this is good moment to *snap* The one of him and Gasquet is alright.

lizabeth..*
07-03-2003, 06:13 AM
Mmmm Gasquet one isn't bad at all....But I danno...I still think this one is great..

When will photographers learn....action shots do NOTHING for a person..unless it is an unbelievable shot

For those of you who care about such things, he beat Robredo in the National Championships tonight, and will play the semis tomorrow against Verdasco, I think. The final scores was 6-4 6-4

lizabeth..*
07-04-2003, 05:24 AM
Vamos Rafy....To be honest I thought it would be a little closer than that..but ohh well. He won :D :bounce:

...

Anyhow, Rafael lost the finals 4-6 4-6 to Lopez, but it was still a good week for him, topped off with a very nice win over Robredo. Hopefully he carries some confidence over to Bstaad this coming week.

lizabeth..*
07-06-2003, 10:54 PM
To bad he lost but a good week for him anyway. The win over Tommy would have been goo for him.

I believe that girl is another tennis player?!

Chloe le Bopper
07-07-2003, 03:38 AM
Rafael will be playing singles in Bstaad this wee - in the first round he plays Younes El A. and he's playing doubles with Moya. :)

Nadal - Moya
My 2 favorites...
They'll win the tournament for sure! :D

Chloe le Bopper
07-08-2003, 03:31 AM
Let's not get ahead of ourselves ;) Word has it that Moya isn't much of a doubles player

They won their first match pretty easily though, so it's good practice if nothing else!

lizabeth..*
07-08-2003, 03:39 AM
He may not be great....but hes not THAT bad - lol.... I could think of much worse players.

Vamos Rafy - good luck for tonite :D

Go Rafa!

Well done :bounce: I haven't seen him play. What kind of tennis does he play? I really want to see :( So Rafael is a better doubles player in the team
I still think Moya is a better player of course, even though Rafael has beaten him already.

Rafael is Carlos' apprentice, they've known eachother for a long time, and you can also tell by watching Rafi play, he has a similar style to Carlos Moya.
He doesn't hit very hard yet, and his serve is probably his weakness, but you know, he's only 17 so he has loads and loads of time to improve.
He won't really overpower the opponent, but instead he'll run down balls and do something nice with them, give them a great angle, hit a dropshot off them, a lob, anything... he really outplays his opponents.
His strengths are that he's really fast, and his forehand is really good too, oh and he's a lefty!

claudine140
07-09-2003, 03:57 PM
Nadal won from Portas and must play now against Lapenti
Tomorrow he plays double with moya

Chloe le Bopper
07-09-2003, 03:59 PM
I'd say that his groundstrokes are pretty hard... not like Moya or Ferrero yet, but that will come.

Anyhow, he beat Portas 6-0 6-4 today and will play Lapentti f or a spot in the quarters. If I've done my math right, he'll be roughly 55th now. If he beats Nico, he'll be about 52nd. A final would quite obviously put him in the top 50, but that might have to wait ;)

Xin
07-09-2003, 07:35 PM
WOw, that's unbelievable. 0 and 4  I expect him to win but not by this much. Thanks for the infor Glenn  So Rafael must play the kind of tennis I like :lick: He is aggressive but at the same time a shot maker and maybe hit a lot of forced winners :hearts: Like all the players I like

Chloe le Bopper
07-09-2003, 11:47 PM

I should point out - for those who don't know - that the women running rafaelnadal.com have started up a message board in conjuction with the site. I read it for information, but can't stand the format of sports resources boards so likely won't really post there. But maybe somebody reading this would want to :wavey:

Glenn

Rafael just lost his quarterfinal to Nicolas Lapentti of Argentina.
Rafael won the first set 6-3, Nicolas fought back and won the second set 6-3 also.
Then Rafael had several matchpoints; 1 at 5-4 on Nicolas' serve, 3 at 6-5 also on Nicolas' serve, then again 1 at 6-5 in the tiebreak.
Eventually he lost 8-6 in the tiebreak.

Nicolas Lapentti def. Rafael Nadal 3-6 6-3 7-6(6)

Ouch to all the matchpoints. Oh well... Lapentti's ranking has died a rather pathetic death, and he needs a decent result. I'm over it ;)

No, not at all. After Gonzo won the first set 6-2 I thought that he might go into high gear and roll over Rafael in the second, so I was impressed that Rafael made it a little difficult for him :D Gonzo - when his head is there - is a very powerful player, so this is a good scoreline!

Rafael is yet to be bagelled at the ATP level... or lose in the first round. Hopefully he can keep that up ;)

BigCrimper
07-17-2003, 06:40 AM
Actually a very solid stat...not all of the first rounds he's played have been against the likes of Philipp of the dubious age ;)

Chloe le Bopper
07-17-2003, 06:45 AM
At last check, Philipp was 13 going on 37. And yes, Rafael has had some tough first round matches. Any normal 16/17 year old would not be beating these guys. It's been a pretty phenomenal few months. Hopefully he gets a good draw next week in Umag.... it's a weak field, and it would be awfully nice to see him crack the top 50 there.

BigCrimper
07-17-2003, 06:49 AM
Yeah it would. It would be pretty incredible considering where he was ranked at the start of this year.

Chloe le Bopper
07-17-2003, 07:03 AM
What was he ranked at the start of the year? He wasn't in the top 200, I know that much *scratches head*

BigCrimper
07-17-2003, 06:12 PM
Sources say (aka. stevegtennis.com) that he was ranked 200 at the end of 2002 and after the first week of this year was a whopping 198. Quite a leap to now be almost in the top 50!

Chloe le Bopper
07-17-2003, 08:46 PM
Well he'll definately end the year in the top 50 now...unless he just stops playing ;) He could even make the top 40 or 30 if he can translate these results to hard, so yeah.... an incredible leap indeed.

BigCrimper
07-18-2003, 04:21 AM
I hope he can have hard court success as well, although I have a feeling it might be a bit tougher for him. But yes, Top 50 is this year's destiny for him ;)

Off topic, but I noticed when looking at the year end ranks from last year that Coria has shed almost thirty places off his ranking -- I didn't remember he was ranked so low at the start of this year. Also, Philippoussis has jumped from 80th at the end of 2002 into the top twenty... and then there's Verkerk...both impressive but I give the nod to the former as more so because of both sentimental reasons and the potential to climb higher ;)

You can get lost in the rankings game

Chloe le Bopper
07-18-2003, 05:27 AM
Has Coria not shed more like 50 spots off his ranking? If not for Verkerk and Schuettler he'd be a prime candidate for "most improved"... which should go to Rainer, imo, even though Verkerk has improved his ranking more. I think Coria started the year around 58th, no?

Chloe le Bopper
07-18-2003, 05:28 AM
Mark's ranking rise is impressive, but less notable since he's just getting back to where he belongs. That is, the other guys are doing it for the first time. Although, I suppose that shouldn't say that his remarkable comeback from injury and bad fortune is "less notable".

Chloe le Bopper
07-18-2003, 05:31 AM

Wonder if he can take Moya's scalp again tomorrow?

07-26-2003, 08:23 AM
There is always room on the bandwagon! Man..Rafael even has haters now, I've discovered! Amazing ...

He's in the doubles finals!

Kazandra

Haters already? And he isn't even born yet!!

Quite a good sign though, in a pathetic sort of way. Hating probably means they're afraid on behalf of their own favourite - why bother to hate someone unless they represent a threat? (Bet Barry Cowan never had an enemy in the world! ;) ) Hmm, just seventeen and already they're running scared....I like it!

Think you could be right about the Moya match - I was gobsmacked when Rafa beat him in Hamburg to be honest, because if anyone ought to know all about Nadal's game it should be Moya. Two in a row might be pushing it...

Too bad none of it's being shown. I nearly saw him in the flesh at Wimby playing Lee Childs, but the crowds in the standing area were about ten deep :( Saw the top of his racket though! ;) Think we'll get lots of opportunities to see him in the not-too-distant future though: when he's #1 they can't exactly ignore him... :D

Chloe le Bopper

Heh... yes, they're very heartless like that :(

(Bet Barry Cowan never had an enemy in the world! ;) ) Hmm, just seventeen and already they're running scared....I like it!

Something like that, yeah. Most of the comments I've read/been told about were just people not seeing the big deal. Which is fine... not everybody is going to root for him. It's the ones that go into more detail that irritate me. Grrr. I won't get into it here ;)

Think you could be right about the Moya match - I was gobsmacked when Rafa beat him in Hamburg to be honest, because if anyone ought to know all about Nadal's game it should be Moya. Two in a row might be pushing it...

The win over Moya in Hamburg was totally shocking. I don't think that anybody saw it coming...not even Moya :o Rafael did alright today, though, considering that Moya was apaprently playing very well.

Nadal and Lopez Moron won the doubles title in Umag:

http://a1.cpimg.com/image/29/09/21578281-fa92-0210018C-.jpg

It's *just* doubles, but still.. a first title is a first title. If I'm not mistaken this is the second doubles title for LM... the last one coming in Umag a couple years ago with Portas.

Hi Rafael-ites!

Great to see Rafa win a title :D , and you're right Rebecca, *just* doubles is fine - every win is precious at this stage.

So you're seeing Rafa at the Open? One thing I already know is that you might HEAR him before you see him! Btw, don't forget your camera like I bloody did... :fiery:

Volandri, eh? Not quite my cup of tea, but then *whispers*I didn't really have aesthetics in mind for Rafa either - more history-in-the-making I think ;) But OMG, no camera and I was within INCHES of Feliciano L :hearts: ...*still kicking self*

Btw, in fact the grunt wasn't quite as bad as tv led me to think, unless I'm just used to it already. Open air, windy day - dulls it down a bit. Probably sounds like a buffalo in labour indoors though! Not that I care mind you - he can impersonate an entire Safari Park as long as he wins! ;)

One more for the bandwaggon. ;) I saw Rafael in Umag and he blew me away. He really is a phenomenon.

Like Becca said, his groundstrokes are pretty hard, and he can volley very well. :) It's not for nothing he won the doubles title, even though the draw was weak. He also uses dropshots and lobs as an effective weapon. He thinks about his tactics, and doesn't just pound the ball blindly. He's stong on both sides as well. He is mentally stronger than a lot of the older guys. All in all, he has tremendous potential to be a great all-court player. He has to work on his serve, but it's not bad by any means. I hope he doesn't emulate Carlos in that respect. ;) By that I mean the Careless Moya that keeps popping up these days.

Mind you, Carlos is also one of my faves, but when he suddenly starts serving badly (usually when serving for the set/match), it's not pretty.

I hope Rafael has a good US Open run! :D

I was at the USO the first three days... I was only going to stay two, but when Nadal got put on Wednesday i just had to stay another day so that I could see him - and it was worth it! I watched his practice with Moya in the morning, and then I watched his match a little while after... I'm glad I stayed!

No kidding... not many players will keep my glued to the scoreboard, but he did today. Even when it was pretty evident he was going down. I was rooting for him anyways, but after seeing him live (the only match that i didn't leave part way through and return to later... the only one i watched in full) in the first round, I'm a believer ;) I'd have been impressed if he was 20...

Well people who are in charge of tournies in Madrid are real assholes... in the wta tourny they prefer giving WC to foreign people before that to young talented Spanish, but if they don't give one to Rafael (I doubt they won't :fiery: ) that will be too much to who will they give it??? Clavet because he's from Madrid???....
Gasquet has so much help with WC in any French tournament....

Well perhaps he's just planning to play qualies in case he's somehow overlooked... in favour of Clavet or Gasquet? No, I don't see that happening :p Unless he specifically requests not to have one, I can't imagine him not getting one. I mean... Apparently all you posted about the poll in Marca newspaper it's true, they are giving one of the WC to the winner that will be Nadal who is leading with a 70% followed by Verdasco.
Other WC will be given to Alex Corretja and the last one is a secret... I hope they will give it to the one between Nadal or Verdasco who don't win the poll

propi... I was actually asking about the popularity of Rafael Nadal in Spain, not of Richard Gasquet ;) How long has Nadal been hyped there? I didn't hear squat about him until he won his first ATP last year when he was still 15, about a week after Richard won his first ATP match (in which case, Nadal went mostly ignored).

I had read he'd play qualies in Madrid some time ago on rafaelnadal.com ... I'm not positive what her (the webmaster) source for his schedule is, but it's a very good one whatever it is :)

I hope that Verdasco gets the last WC, along with Nadal and Corretja.

Nadal wasn't known until this year, but it's because as everywhere those who give sport news don't have a minimun idea, plus it's all about football here... after he beat Moyà and so became more popular but periodists always remember he's Nadal's nephew
On the other hand, if you like tennis (as I do) you can get to know him much earlier, I heard of him when he was 12 and they said he was a promising youngster in a tennis magazine, how right they were!!!:)

Did you? I first got to see him play Coria in Hamburg - the only good thing about you guys not getting clay TMS coverage in the US, is that TSN then carries coverage that is not USian... and thus I get to see players who are actually, you know, good on clay ;)

Hola 2004!

Yeah, Rafa and Tommy practising for DC purposes and Alex has taken himself out of the DC this year to concentrate on his ATP singles. As for Feli, he's playing dbles w Max Mirnyi! [hey, what about Rogi, Max??] Interesting combo, maybe Feli is similar to Rogi w his S&V tactics -- w love to see what Max has to say about him...

Anyway, hope Tommy and Rafa do well -- they s have been playing dbles all along... at least Tommy played w Rainer last year. Silly Spanish grupo tecnico! They really blew it waiting til the final last year... not saying any more about it now that it's a new year.

Yeah, but why not have such a goal to motivate you? Great he beat Sjeng today?!

Becca, I LOVE peanut butter but I do not LOVE David!! :p

VAMOS, RAFA!! I want you to win a title or two this year!!
Oh, I think that ambition is a fabulous thing. I didn't mean to suggest he was being ridiculous. Top 25 is a great goal for him. Last year his goal was to get into the top 100, and we all know how well that went, so :)

You do love David, by the way. YOu just don't know it yet!

Wow that was a tight win over Mario, 7-6(0) 7-6(6)

It seems Ancic is quite a choker... he served for the first set at 5-4 but got broken and then didn't win point in that 1st tie breaker :o

Not to mention the 2nd tie breaker, he wasted a 5-1 lead :retard:

Well I think Rafa is getting better and better on decisive points :D

I know you didn't mean to suggest he was being ridiculous, not at all, Becca! lol! He might as well aim for top 25 and I'll support him all the way!

Vamos, Rafa!!

Great win over Ancic too!! woo hoo!! Keep going! Who's next, btw??

[you mean to say I'm a closet Nalby-lover? what a thought!! :p cringe, cringe... I can barely watch him on TV, unless he beats the crap out of Pandy or some equally vile player... ;) but vs. my Rogi?! only the TMC Houston RR match was one I was able to sit thru... :D ]

Funny Ma Estefania, I'm the opposite!! [I'm talking PB and David here!]

oh ok it was Hamburg :
Star on the Rise
The young Spaniard Rafael Nadal began last year playing both the ATP and Challenger circuits, compiling an impressive winning record for a 17-year-old. He won two Challenger events in Barletta and Segovia, won an ATP doubles title with partner Lopez Moron, and qualified for two Tennis Masters Series tournaments in Monte Carlo and Hamburg. He reached the third round on both those occasions. He also reached the third round at Wimbledon in his debut, becoming the youngest player to do so since Boris Becker in 1984.

It may be premature to put him in such illustrious company, but there is much about him that is similar to the young Becker - of course he looks nothing like the big German and stylistically it might be more accurate to compare him to a young Agassi, but nevertheless - the confidence bordering on brashness, the boundless energy, the fire in the belly and the raw shot-making talent.

Underneath all that, he seems focused and well-grounded. He freely offered after his first round win (7-6 6-4 over fourth seed Sjeng Schalken) the modest observation that he would not have won if the game had gone to a third set. But he had just stepped off a plane from Chennai, and this was obviously part of his reasoning.

The next night we saw what he could do after a good night's rest. Against the big-serving Croatian qualifier Mario Ancic, he lost serve in both sets before fighting back and taking them to tiebreaks. The first tiebreak he won 7-0, and the second 8-6 after being 0-5 down. He then told the crowd how pleased he was to be here, and apologised for his English while grinning from ear to ear. The nature of the win had delighted him as much as it had the crowd.

Nadal was cautious about his prospects for his quarters match against Frenchman Gregory Carraz. "He serves very good. This match will be very difficult. I won in Hamburg in three sets. But all of the quarter-finals are difficult," he said.

Nadal is ranked No. 48 in the world in the latest ATP Entry Rankings which came out on Monday while Carraz is 65th.

Tennis: Young Spaniard shows he is destined for the top

16.01.2004
By TERRY MADDAFORD

Rafael Nadal has used a few "get out of jail free" cards but the fans hope he has enough left to get him to tomorrow's open final.

The 17-year-old Spaniard has wowed the crowds since his late arrival at the Heineken Open.

Nadal, a big mover on the ATP circuit - he is the second 16-year-old and first since Michael Chang (in 198 to break into the tour's top 100, and the youngest since Boris Becker (in 1984) to reach the third round at Wimbledon - is destined for the top.

Since his Tuesday afternoon arrival after he and compatriot Tommy Robredo (an unseeded combination) had beaten top seeds Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram (Israel) in the doubles final in Chennai, India, Nadal has been a young man in a hurry.

He played one "jail" card to win the first set tiebreaker en route to a straight-sets, first-round win over fourth seeded Dutchman Sjeng Schalken, and another on Wednesday night to come back from 0-5 in the second-set tiebreaker to end qualifier Mario Ancic's run.

There is no tomorrow when Nadal is on court.

"That is the way I have always played," he said after a walkover win against France's Gregory Carraz in yesterday's quarter-final.

"I play every shot like my life depends on it.

"My coach [uncle Toni Nadal] says always be aggressive. It is difficult to win if you are not aggressive.

"No matter what the situation, the best you can do is fight for every point. It is very important to believe in yourself."

I think that it was my first final and I was a little bit nervous," said Nadal who raced to catch a 5.30pm plane to Melbourne for the start of the Australian Open where he plays a qualifier in the first round. "The first match in every tournament is the most important and if you can win that match nobody knows what will happen," said Nadal.

Regarding his opponents potential Hrbaty believed Nadal could make a real impact on the international circuit. "Nadal, it seems is going to be a great player. He could win at Roland Garros. He could be good."

Both players said they would return to Auckland for the 50th anniversary of the tournament next year.

I'm sure he had those last year... it's just more noticable with the sleeveless get-up.

Anyways...

I was reading the messageboard at: http://on.starblvd.net/cgi-bin/bbs?rafaelnadal and it appears that he's had a hilarious explosion of teeny bopper fans from NZ. Heh

"we all think that you should've won but it doesn't matter, you still looked good :)"
*snorts*

Rebecca you get the "RA" tatooed on you belly I'll have the "FA" Nacho can have the "EL" and we'll be good to go....just hope this doesnt go into his head.
Is it just me or did he looked like he was enjoying the attention and seemed to be playing up to it a bit, I mean he was never THAT dramatic on court and now he's fistpumping every point ;)
Oh well it's his first final, he's a 17 year old boy, 748393646 teenage girls in the audience telling him he's the man, dont blame him for getting a little juiced ;)

As for the muscles issue, he's always had them ;)

and he seems to be getting more photogenic as well..;)
