Yes, I'm pretty sure that Hewitt was up a break.

You can get updated scores off the main atptennis site as well. Just go to "scores and draws" and you will find it. Mind you, "updated" means "every half hour or so" ;)

It just occured to me that everybody I like that is left, are all in the same half  : David, Mark, and James. Grar!

I don't mind Dent, so i can always hold out hope for the minute chance he has of making the final ;)

Nalbandian - Mark P. 6-0 1-2! :D

Sjengster
03-07-2003, 09:58 PM
Somehow I'm not surprised, looking at the way their games match up - Nalbandian is going to absorb the Scud's winners and eat up his errors just like he does against Federer. I imagine Philippoussis now knows how Draper felt yesterday....

Chloe le Bopper
03-07-2003, 10:09 PM
Even if David is returning really well, Mark has to be having a crap serve day to get bagelled ;)

Sjengster
03-07-2003, 10:16 PM
Oh, I don't deny that he's having another dreadful, inconsistent and sloppy match, he's undoubtedly contributed to that - but there are certain players around who are consistent enough to make the most of that and to take every opportunity given to them, and Nalbandian is certainly one of those. Admittedly, bagels seem to have become his prerogative too recently, what with those infamous collapses against Schuettler and Zabaleta, but even though he has mental weaknesses he doesn't go completely haywire in the way that Philippoussis does.

Chloe le Bopper
03-07-2003, 10:21 PM
Agreed.

I think that Mark might be up a break, but the scoreboard might just be on drugs.

I want David to win though, because I want him to pass Costa.

Awesome4hand
03-07-2003, 10:32 PM
That's what I hate about Philippoussis. He can be so bloody awful if he wants to be. I dun expect him to beat Nalbandian.

Yes, I see your point - but if Philippoussis leads 4-3 in the last set, then he must logically be up a break....

Come on Scud, prove me wrong! Apart from anything else, a semi-final with Blake would be very interesting, as the winner would certainly provide an entertaining match with Hewitt even if they lost, in the way that the error-free Argentines Nalbandian and Zabaleta wouldn't.

Gee..,.. you are confident. Zab has to go through Blake first. Mark looks like he's got his head together now.

An All-Argentine semi would be great. Somehow I don't think it's gonna happen.

Sjengster
03-07-2003, 10:42 PM
It certainly isn't going to happen:

M. Philippoussis def. D. Nalbandian 0-6, 6-3, 6-4

That's what over-confidence does for you, I suppose... and a good recovery from Mr Hit and Miss, of course.

I'd like either a Hewitt-Mark final, or a Dent-Mark final. If only because the last one would be highly amusing ;)

I guess that Mark just had an enormous brain fart in the first set...

Yes indeed, although by the end it would seem that Nalbandian's game had become constipated, to coin an American commentating phrase from the Australian Open.

Oh, how I wish I had seen that Dent-Philippoussis encounter in Memphis a couple of weeks ago... the irony is that now, Dent is the higher-ranked and more conservative player who has more match practice and would probably produce the more sensible shots under pressure, where a couple of years ago it was the exact opposite.

In fact, Dent's play against Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2001 was rather similar to Philippoussis now; going for an all-out Grand Slam record on service speed and succeeding, slamming short forehands several feet into the stands and diving and lunging about the court for hopelessly sharp reflex volleys. I still feel that it was that match that really jerked the stoic Wimbledon public into the world of 21st century tennis - Dent's power (and grunting) against the emotional fire of Hewitt, who leapt about ten feet into the air when he broke serve at the start of the final set. The dazzled crowd had never seen anything like it.

Awesome4hand

There's a possibility of either an all-aussie final or an all-american final. Hopefully it's an all-aussie affair after all I am an aussie.

Riley Finn

Sjengster
03-08-2003, 12:40 AM
He is indeed... and hopefully, that match will be on Eurosport tomorrow as I know they're showing one of the semi-finals. Oh, what bliss it will be. Even if he loses heavily, Dent will go down trying to be as extravagant and free-wheeling as possible; not for him the draining baseline grind of trying to keep up with Hewitt, he'll be slamming down serves and lunging all over the net to try and cut off passing shots that will probably whizz straight past him for winners. Who knows though, with Dent's impressive form recently he could stand a very good chance.

Riley Finn
03-08-2003, 12:46 AM
don't really think he stands a chance....but I can cheer for him :)

If Hewitt is playing 'like crap' then how on Earth did he manage to beat Corretja in straight sets? I didn't see the match but from the scoreline I thought that Hewitt must have played well. In fact I have never seen Hewitt play badly even when he lost to El Ayanoui in AO I thought he played near his best.

Because Corretja runs on steam and he's devoid of his hot air?

there's the old saying
you NEVER beat a good player 6-0 (in set 1)
in most cases in mens tennis it comes back to haunt you esp against real QUALITY.

Awesome4hand

I dunno much about Corretja's game I must admit. I saw him play Hewitt in the first round of AO some years ago when he lost to Hewitt 60 60 61 (Hewitt was relatively new at the time)... never bothered to watch him again.

Corretja returned the favour - though, in less impressive fashion - and knocked Hewitt out of the Masters Cup later that year. In a match that was pretty meaningless to Alex, who was already out of the tournament, he was sure to send Hewitt back home to practice for DC after two sets ;)
