06/03/03 03:00 h.La Federació Catalana (FCT), en colaboración con la Fundació FC Barcelona, organizará la disputa de un 'tiebreak' entre Albert Costa y Àlex Corretja en el centro del Camp Nou. No hay fecha para el duelo, aunque será antes de un partido liguero relevante del Bar-ça dentro de la temporada en curso que sea retransmitido por televisión. Los tenistas aprovecharán en el césped el tiempo entre la conclusión del calentamiento de los equipos y su posterior salida al campo. La idea es que el estadio esté lleno y que el 'tiebreak' entre en la lista de récords Guinness como el más visto en directo.

El evento forma parte del calendario de los actos que ha diseñado la Federació Catalana para celebrar su Centenario y que presentó ayer en el edificio barcelonés de La Pedrera. Los festejos, que se prolongarán hasta verano del año que viene, incluyen otras competiciones deportivas de relieve.

Debut de la selección catalana

Por vez primera competirá la selección catalana absoluta de tenis. Este mismo año se enfrentará a Francia en Girona, en una fecha que dependerá de los resultados del equipo español y del galo en Copa Davis. En 2004 el enfrentamiento será contra Marruecos, quedando inaugurado oficialmente el el Centro Internacional de Tenis de Cornellà, actualmente en construcción en terrenos colindantes con el futuro estadio del RCE Espanyol.

La instalación, gestionada por la FCT y que combinará el tenis de élite con la cabida a socios, dispondrá de una residencia con capacidad para 46 jugadores, pistas de GreenSet y tierra batida, gimnasio y un centro médico deportivo, entre otras facilidades.

El Centenario incluirá también un homenaje a Arantxa Sánchez y otro al resto de campeones catalanes, además de múltiples actividades culturales con el tenis como motivo principal

The Spaniards will play a tie-break on a makeshift grass court just before kickoff of the blockbuster football clash between fierce rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou stadium.

The exhibition is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Catalan Tennis Federation. It is believed that the sold-out crowd of 90,000 will be the biggest to ever witness a tennis event.

The tie-break, which Corretja claimed 8-6, was watched by 49,913 fans, smashing the tennis crowd attendance record (23,600) previously set in the Arthur Ashe stadium at Flushing Meadows. Both players played with football boots to avoid slipping on the wet surface.

The match was organized by the Catalan Tennis Federation, "Double Match" and "Futbol Club Barcelona" in order to commemorate the centennial of the Catalan Tennis Federation

i just heard on dutch sportsnews that martin verkerk will maybe withdraw because hes ill.
as i told already, friday he had to give up in a semi final, and today he had a practice but he was very dizzy and he said he couldnt play if he feels like this..
its not sure yet of course, because they play tomorrow.

As you Alex fans already know, Alex staged a comeback victory yesterday. I didn't see the match but I heard from outside the stadium the big cheer that went up when he won. Also the announcer interviewed Alex and congratulated him on coming from behind to win. Alex was very gracious in his remarks and particularly thanked the crowd for always having given him such great support at this tournament and in this match too. It almost sounded a little like a good bye. But it may have just been his genuine appreciation for a crowd that was behind him all the way. :)
