Friday Daily Predictions

Andy Roddick 1 (USA) vs. Robby Ginepri (USA)

The big question in this quarterfinal is can Robby Ginepri beat Andy Roddick?

I admit I'm no statistician, but I suspect the law of averages might be on Ginepri's side since he's yet to beat his boyhood rival, Andy Roddick, in six career meetings.

The first time these two played in the pros was at the Knoxville Challenger in 2000 - the only time Ginepri scored a set. Since then it's been all Roddick, including in the round-of-16 at the RCA Championships, where Ginepri played Andy hard, but not quite hard enough. And to be fair, while I don't know the entire junior background between these two, I do remember that at the 2000 US Open, Roddick beat Ginepri in the junior boys' final. That win, coupled with a victory in the Australian Open junior title, established Andy as the No. 1 junior in the world.

Ginepri fell prey to Roddick twice already this year - in the quarterfinals in Memphis and the round-of-16 in Houston.

So far this year, Ginepri has reached the quarterfinals at Memphis and Auckland and has not added any trophies to the one he scored at Newport in 2003. In contrast, Roddick has won three titles this year in San Jose, Houston and London/Queen's, which brings his title tally up to 18 in five years on the tour. And lest we forget, one of those titles stands out proudly as coming from the 2003 US Open.

Okay, so if you're getting my drift, law of averages doesn't really hold much weight once two athletes get out to the court and do battle. The No. 98 ranked Ginepri might be a good guy, but that doesn't give him the goods to contend with the No. 4 ranked Roddick.

Greg Rusedski 7 (GBR) vs. Nicolas Kiefer 2 (GER)

Greg Rusedski, 31, is the type of guy that seems to have nine lives when it comes to his tennis career. On more than one occasion it was thought that injuries and/or bad results would bring the curtain down on Rusedski's career. But this southpaw seems to always have the fight and the passion to continue on, currently rebounding to the No. 40 ranking spot – not quite as good as when he ranked No. 4 in the world back in the autumn of 1997.

The 1997 US Open finalist, Rusedski has won 15 career titles, most recently successfully defending his Newport crown earlier this month. A southpaw with a fast-paced serve-and-volley style, fans should cherish watching Rusedski because his brand of tennis is quickly becoming a dying breed.

As for Kiefer, he's putting together a good solid year having reached the quarterfinals in Adelaide, Dubai, Indian Wells and now Indianapolis. In his career, Kiefer has won six titles, but it's been quite a while since he reeled in his last two in Dubai and Hong Kong in 2000.

Rusedski comes into this match against Nicolas Kiefer with a 5-4 winning record over the German. But their head-to-head comes across as strange in that only one of their encounters has taken place since 1999 – Kiefer won their outing at the 2004 summer tournament in Los Angeles. Their other outings all took place between 1997 and 1999 with Rusedski winning the last of those in Vienna. But, interestingly, it is Kiefer who has won both of their outings on US soil – the one in Los Angeles as well as their 1999 meeting at Miami.

If the weather continues to be hot, I believe that will take more of a toll on Rusedski and keep Kiefer in the mix. But if Rusedski can stand the heat, the Briton could reel in a semifinal spot at the RCA Championships.

Taylor Dent 4 (USA) vs. Paul Goldstein (USA)

Good for Paul Goldstein in his ability to fight for a career resurrection. Mostly seen on the challenger circuit these days, Goldstein has battled back to No. 78 in the world and has made it to the Indy quarterfinals. If Goldstein, who already took out No. 6 seed Max Mirnyi in the second round, keeps the momentum going he could create another stunning upset on Friday. But, the safe bet is to book a date with Dent.

Karol Beck 10 (SVK) vs. George Bastl (SUI)

George Bastl had a quick day yesterday when Mardy Fish retired in their match after only a few games when his surgically repaired wrist got the best of him. That was a bonus for Bastl, who was able to stay out of the heat and rest a bit for his quarterfinal date. There is no denying that Bastl is having a good week, but common sense would say his run is up and Beck will walk away improving his record against the Swiss to 2-0 and with a semifinal appointment.

i do know my junior records (mostly itf ones) at least for robby (and mario) i do, but there are only 2 times that i can recall them playing and thats obviously the junior uso final which andy won 6-1 6-3 (ironically for me at least he beat mario semis)
they also played in the quarter finals of the australian hardcourt jnrs (the week before the jnr AO which he won, beating mario in the final  ) andy won that one 6-1 6-2 before losing to i think robredo in the final but i could be wrong on that one but i seem to remember it being robredo as i was only checking robredos junior stats for gaby the other day. but thats not important.
But yes robby has NEVER beaten andy EVER. i don't even think they played each other in the junior doubles even though they were #1 and #2 best doubles players

but as much as i love andy i do think robby needs it more than he does so i will be supporting robby tomorrow (sorry ducky)

go robby go! :bounce:

**edit* i just checked and i was right it was robredo he beat in the australian hardcourt jnrs not that its important but just wanted to edit to say i was right**

you saw Taylor´s matches ?? Because without the live view I would say that it is not that good to break out Gambill only two times and one time he was even rebreaked from Gambill. Last time I saw Gambill was Cincy last year and it was horrible and I think JM isn´t much better maybe even worser this year.

I suppose. it's been a poor match from both, really.... lots of loose errors, from Beck especially when serving for both the first set and match. And Bastl has really given a lot of his service games away. I'd say neither are too impressive and either of them will lose the semi, regardless of who they play.
