ehhh good !
At first he won a match, secondly against Costa, that's good, I was sure he was going to lose easily at first round after Moscow's nightmare.

Allez Paulo, Gaudio lost at first round in RG this year, not you, come on

Article about his new collaboration with Thierry Tuslane, in l'Equipe

 Well done Paulo! :worship: I must admit i'm surprised it was won in two sets. (percentage of Paulo's break points conversion, please?, a description of how it went if that's possible too... ;) ) So far so good. Give all you've got next match and we'll see what comes out of it! Just relearn to enjoy to play and it'll do. :)

You misunderstood my intentions. I'm really happy about this win which, looking only at the score, seems to reveal that he's already back on track after his two humiliating and painful defeats. So i'm curious and i want to know more about his match to really know if he has progressed in terms of "bouncebackability" ( love this word! ) and in term of break points conversion... or if Costa helped him in his attempt to get back at his best level (how kind of him... :p if it's the case...) in "giving" him the match by playing really bad. That's all! I'll never ever be despising with Paulo even when joking. ;)

well, I understood, you want to know if Paulo needed 20 break balls to convert one...

L'Equipe

– Ph. B.

I love this quote

Mathieu Serves Out Roddick

August 9, 2005 - France's Paul-Henri Mathieu pulled off a huge upset in the first round of the Rogers Cup at Jarry Park Tuesday night, defeating American Andy Roddick, defending Tennis Masters Montreal champion and third seed, 7-5, 6-3.

Winner in Washington this past Sunday, Roddick was beaten at his own game by an inspired Mathieu. The Frenchman served 14 aces compared to three by the American.

Roddick had only good things to say about Mathieu after his surprising loss.

“I thought he played great,” Roddick said. “I think he served really well tonight. You know – a lot of credit to him. He didn't let me settle in and try to find my bearings. He really took it to me so I was playing reactive instead of active.”

The American also explained his difficulty adapting to the conditions in Montreal compared to those in Washington.

“It just felt totally different out there than it did two days ago,” he said. “The court, the balls, they're all a little bit different. I just didn't adjust. It's a different ball. I just didn't feel like I was doing anything real comfortably out there.”

Mathieu doesn't rank the win as the biggest in his career, but he puts it amongst the top five. “I've already beaten Sampras and Safin, but it's definitely one of my best matches. The ball is really light and moves a lot here. You just have to adapt.”

Mathieu plays his second round match against Arnaud Clément Wednesday. Clément advanced to round two with a win over Argentine Jose Acasuso in three sets. Another all-French match-up pits Richard Gasquet against Sébastien Grosjean, who ousted Paradorn Srichaphan.

The two remaining Canadians were both eliminated on Tuesday. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., fell 6-2, 6-2 to Belgium's Xavier Malisse; while Rob Steckley of Thornhill, Ont., took the first set off Dane Kenneth Carlsen before bowing out 6-4, 6-3.

MONTREAL, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Paul-Andre Mathieu upset the form book in the first round of the Montreal Masters on Tuesday when the unseeded Frenchman registered a stunning 7-5 6-3 victory over third-seeded American Andy Roddick.
It was a tough day for the leading seeds, with number two Lleyton Hewitt succumbing to a stomach bug and the top-ranked Rafael Nadal forced to dig deep to earn a second-round berth.

Mathieu, who had lost all eight of his encounters against top-10 opponents this year, matched the big-serving Roddick in the first set before breaking him in the 12th game to take the opener.

He broke Roddick again in the second game of the second set and despite facing break points himself twice in the fifth game, held serve the rest of the match for the victory.

"I like to play big matches," a smiling Mathieu said after the win on centre court.

"I had a lot of injuries last year and I'm trying to come back and this is going to give me some confidence."

Roddick had won 18 of his past 20 matches, including a victory in the Washington Classic final on Sunday, but the world number four appeared lethargic for most of the contest and could not match the pace and enthusiasm of an inspired Mathieu.

Mathieu will now meet fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the second round after the qualifier advanced with a 2-6 6-3 6-3 victory over Jose Acasuso of Argentina.

MONTREAL, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Paul-Andre Mathieu upset the form book in the first round of the Montreal Masters on Tuesday when the unseeded Frenchman registered a stunning 7-5 6-3 victory over third-seeded American Andy Roddick.

Thanks for sharing :yeah: I like these little anecdotes.

I also heard from the french commentators that some french players criticized the fact that Paulo was training with Hagelauer (DC coach) during RG and that's the reason why he had to change. But they didn't gave any names... I wonder who they are...

Anyway, that's a good start for him and Thierry Tulasne.

Rogers Cup - Interviews

An interview with:

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU

THE MODERATOR: English questions first, please.

Q. How does that rank up there for big wins for you?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: What was that?

Q. How does it rank in importance?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: It's a great victory for me. I mean, I play a very good match today. I knew, I mean, I could beat him. Two years ago I beat some great players, so I knew I had my chance.

Q. Can you talk about that one point that was so fabulous? He lobbed you.

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: I mean, I don't know what to say. I mean, it was a great point. I don't know. I just try to put the ball in play. What a winner.

But, I mean, it was a great feeling. When I saw the ball was in, I mean, it's a great feeling. You try to enjoy it.

Q. When did you start to feel that you had a very good chance of winning?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: When I broke him back I think in the first set. He broke me at 2?All. At 3?2 I broke him back. I think I knew I had my chance.

Q. Could you see a change in him?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: No. I think I was returning very well today, so I really serve pretty good. So I think that was the key.

Q. Did you think that long game in the second set with the breakpoints was absolutely crucial?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: At 3-1?

Q. Yes.

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: Yes, I mean, it was a very important game for me. I didn't make a lot of first serve. I think it was very big game for me in the second set.

Q. What were you telling yourself to do? Play on his backhand?

PAUL HENRI MATHIEU: No, I mean, I was trying to playing my game, try to put the ball in play, not to miss so much. And when the ball was short, just go for it.

I've seen the replay too and: What a match! It didn't look like it was a 60th ranked player against a 100th ranked player at all. High quality, i tell you!
It was so great to see Arnaud playing in singles again on tv! They both played really really well but Paulo was superior. The score is as it should be. Arnaud did play very well in the second set. :D
Paulo hit the ball so hard but still he was very smart and had a good tactic and Arnaud tried to do the same to answer him. Arnaud who, as the commentators pointed out, is one of the players who moves the best on the court, ran everywhere very fast all the time. Paulo had to fire winners and devastating attacks to win a point, and he did it perfectly!
I love to see Arnaud hit his "jumped" two-handed BH à la Rios...:inlove: There was everything you can dream of in this match for a second round match between those kind of players at least. Arnaud is still a very good returner.
This is great that PHM had two very different matches against two very different kind of players before his match against Rochus that he MUST win.
That is the good news of the morning! Our Paulo seems to be back. Please stay with us now...
And Paulo looked quite serene and calm! There was no sign of him getting nervous in the tight situations. He actually always believed he'll have the upper hand! This victory over Roddick did a lot of good to him! :D

He used to do this a lot a few years ago. It doesn't surprise me... I think that's because he's reserved that he doesn't shouts "allez" in French. It's easier for him in another language if you understand what i mean. And Rochus is a francophone as was Clément so i guess he didn't want to sound unfair-play or something or to make them react (hearing your opponent get pumped up, encouraging himself in your own language has a lot more effect on you than if he does it in a foreign language...at least that's how it is for me...).

Yeah. It was obvious that he was saying it more to pump himself up than to disturb his opponents (like Hewitt does). But part of the reason could be also that he trained at Bollitieri's (refer to Sharapova :tape: ).

That's not a good reference...I hope he doesn't grunt (a lot less loudly...and well, it's a man's grunt not this unbearable very highpitched scream making as much noise as a little plane in terms of decibels... ) because of that too...

Last time Paulo met Rafa on the clay of Hambourg inthe first round in 2003, he didn't loose with an humiliating score: 7-5, 6-4.
He has already played in a "night session" against Roddick and two times on the central court. He's ok physically. I hope he slept well this time. Yes! He lost but that was an awesome performance from Paulo.
So sad about the 2 DFs at 5-5 just after breaking Nadal. The serves were not as good as in the previous matches.

But anyway, I am proud of you Paulo! :hearts: You played like a top player during this tournie!!! The match against Nadal was awesome. You can be confident for Cincinnati :worship: :worship: :worship:

Yeah he sure can, I loved how he got the very pro Nadal to cheer him on, coz he was trying so hard. And he got a nice standing ovation from the crowd, I am so proud of him, allez boy :hearts:

Did you notice he was running to his chair just as Nadal usually does! I liked his fighting spirit! :D
If only he could have done less UEs and better serves...

My fav part of the match was when he broke Nadal and he did a huge jump and fist pump, I loved it.

Most of his errors were mainly due to the spin Nadal uses. If you watched any of the Rafa and Roger matches, you will notice that Roger was making crazy errors and its mainly due to the spin. Its harder to deal with especially since Paulo hadnt faced anyone playing with that much amount of spin. I wish he had served better but players have days like that, but he gave it his best even when his serve let him down, thats all I can ask for :D
:lol I am turning into quite the fan

Anyway, I am just so happy he is showing so much fight and I love his vamos after every point. The new coach is doing wonders for his confidence. He really is pumping himself up, and he believes now that he belongs up there with the top boys.

Allez Paulo, I am so excited for Cicny, with him playing well and Roger coming back its shaping to be a good tournie. Hope both my boys do really well :D

Yeah. He could have served better and taken some of the BPs. Still, we couldn't ask for more. He has totally surprised us this week. At the beginning of the week, we were expecting a first round exit. Hopefully, the new Paulo will continue to show up in Cincinnati, not the old one. ;)

I won't have access to my PC for a week again (i post thanks to 24/7 cyber cafés... ) but i was able to see this match and will be able to see all his next matches (he scared me against Haas for a while... ). He didn't play the match of his life against Nadal, took a while to loose his nervosity, was a bit naive sometimes but he really played with heart and intensity during the whole match (too bad that he made those two DFs at the worst moment...) and that's just so great. You can take away from him that he gives his all every time. He seems to have kept his form in Cincy and has an occasion to take revenge against Davydenko but it will be very hard. I hope he'll be hypermotivated and not haunted by bad memories...:scared:
Good luck to him! Welcome back Marine! :bigwave:

The New Haven draw is out. Paulo gets Santoro or Carlsen in the 2nd round (1st round bye) and guess who lucky Paulo draws in the 3rd round? Davydenko :fiery:

I'm looking forward to see him kick Davy's ass!!
My advice to Paulo is to look at Davy's profile and realize that he isn't RUSSIAN. . . He IS Ukrainian

:scared::rolleyes: I hope he learned the lessons from Cincy and is hypermotivated about having another opportunity for revenge...Watch out for Santoro (or Carlsen...). It will be a good test for his nerves if he has to play him...
I had almost hoped that it was nearly over with his "good luck"...But he's done worst. Keep smiling. It' better to laugh about it...

Bear in mind that it was Santoro on the other side of the net... ;) Hopefully he's angry at himself, therefore will work his heart out during the week before the USO, will arrive there hypermotivated and will take advantage of the best draw he had in a Slam so far...
It was not chance. But the old Paulo is coming back. That's what i fear...

It's better for him to have lost today against Santoro than on the 1st round of the USO (pfff so obvious.... ).
You are right Delsa...he can be angry at himself and then bounce back, just like he did after his match against Andreev.
In the second round he could play Henman or Verdasco. If he plays the way he played in Montreal, it could be very good for him.
 Go away "Old Paulo"!!! We want to see the "REAL PAULO" :bounce:

L'Equipe

Cela fait long. »

Yeah but you beat me to it two times on other threads so that's ok, isn't it? ;)

Let's share the laugh!
Here's a translation:

Gasquet returned
Richard Gasquet, who suffered from an inflammationof the right elbow, retook his racquet yesterday after a few days off. «I'm doing a lot better now.», he delighted at, not unhappy of his draw either that he qualified of «not too bad » (< at that... ). The programm of his return is very "classy". Yesterday, he hit the ball with Safin on theLouis-Armstrong court, the central bis of Flushing Meadows. Today, he "gives his cue" to Hewitt. And when Rusedski came to ask him to be his sparring-partner for a practice session, the "very demanded" Frenchman who didn't know which way to turn, had to politely decline the invitation: «Sorry but no, Greg. I'm already practising with someone...». _ F. Ra.

Pfff! :haha: Better than the bubbles anectdote, i told you! The way they put it make it sound as if they were teasing Richard so much...lol!

That's the right translation...hum... :o

For Paul-Henri Mathieu that was maybe a match too much after a long American tour. «I regret a little bit to have came here, he admited. I had my head already at the US Open.» Thierry Tulasne didn't really share the opininon of his "protégé". «It's true that it's always a bit uneasy to play during the last week before the US Open. But if we hadn't came here, it would have meant two weeks without competition. And that's not good. It's too long.»

Mathieu will now have a few days to rest and above all to know more about that sudden pain that stroke him in the right leg at the end of the second set. «It worries me a little bit because i was feeling it tensing up. I really hope that it's nothing serious.»
