Wonder if Andy Murray and a few others (Jan-Michael) who probably won't get into Montreal qualies have called here asking for a wildcard?

Wonder if Andy Murray and a few others (Jan-Michael) who probably won't get into Montreal qualies have called here asking for a wildcard?

I would imagine so, especially Jan Michael after going out early in vancouver.
It's good to see Arvind's finally decided to get himself over to the US.

If Richard Bloomfield wins the Legg Mason will he get a special exempt? :p

Binghampton is in New York, same time zone as Montreal. Not really that far away either.

There will be a lot of phone calls flying around on Friday. I know JMG wants to play Montreal qualies (if he's healthy) but after that loss in Vancouver, he may just take a week off to prepare for Cincy instead. We'll know on Friday and Saturday I guess.

stuey87
08-05-2005, 09:21 PM
The Binghampton website is really hailing Murray coming to play on their courts. Perhaps he's assured them that he'd decline the offer of Montreal qualies and will still play in NY even though he's got into the Montreal Qs off the alternates.

Do we not think Andy should be having a rest before Cincy qualies? He's played a lot of tennis lately and had to travel a lot...

Shame, let's all cry for little Andy.

Welcome to the ATP Tour mate, the hardest most un-rewarding individual professional sport on planet earth.

There's no time to be tired when you're a pro tennis player,no time to rest.

maby murray will get a wc to the main draw...

yeah right. with all the Americans fighting for those WC's, its not going to happen.

If Murray is still playing in Binghampton on Saturday, then he will pull out of Cincy, the WC will go to someone else, and he can call the Bronx Challenger next week and ask them for a WC into their main draw.

Just wanted to let you guys know, in hopes of decreasing the questions about results, I called the # for Recreation Park that is listed in the Yahoo yellow pages and it's the pool house. There is apparently no number for where the tennis courts are. So it looks like this week will depend on when the tourney website updates: www.tennischallenger.com

Unless someone else can find a more direct #

I'm guessing because Andy was a last minute decision in regards to playing that tourny (he had applied for qulifiers for Montreal, but because he went to the QF last week couldn't make it I think) that Dave had already set up the pairing with Levy? Just guessing though.

Fingers crossed for Andy tonight, and Jamie and Dave for the rest of the tourny. :wavey:

The British teenager, who recently broke into the world's top 150 and is seeded second in the tournament, won in straight sets, 6-3 6-1.

Jenkins/Reynolds bt. Levy/Sherwood 6-3,7-5 :(
That doesn't bode well for Davis Cup doubles for Sherwood. Part of me wants to blame Levy entirely for the loss and be blind to the fact Dave's out of form at the moment but it'd be harsh and incorrect so I won't.

It's a wee bit worrying, isn't it? Hopefully he'll pull it together because, God knows we need to win the doubles and target the singles rubbers against Wawrinka because I don't think Federer will be feeling particulary generous in his matches.

Regarding the DC, how do you think our players will fare on the clay against Wawrinka? He`s ranked 58, so not a pushover, and correct me if I`m wrong (which I might well be!) but I think we reached the final is Gstaad ( lost to Gaudio) and the fourth round of the FO ( lost to Puerta). I don`t know much about Murray on clay apart from that he almost beat Hernych in Barcelona but Rusedski certainly doesn`t relish playing on clay. What do you think?

If I am being brutally honest? We have no chance. Rusedski struggled to beat Wawrinka on a hard court recently and he has an absolutely abysmal record on clay. Murray has a chance against Wawrinka but expecting him to play three 5 set matches in a row is expecting a lot from him so if I tentatively said Murray beats Wawrinka that would still mean we would need to win the doubles and Rusedski to win one of his matches. I honestly can't see us winning. Maybe if we could persuade Tim to come out of retirement we would have a shot but not with the team we have at the moment in my opinion.

Yes, Wawrinka is a good clay court player and won't be easy to beat, but we simply have to beat him twice otherwise we've lost for sure. Federer's not going to lose a singles, I mean he beat Greg 3 and 1 when they met in Monte Carlo on clay earlier this year.

I never think it's better to lose the match you're in for any reason. It gets you subconsciously in a losing mentality, if not on the surface, which might affect you for the worse in the next match. He should definitely do his best to turn it around against Harsh.

I don't know much about Mankad but on another forum he's been described as a bit of Brit killer so who knows how it will go. If Andy were to lose I think it would probably be quite benficial for him because he can then go play qualifiers for Cincy.

On the ATP site it says his career-high ranking is 237 and was set in July. He started off the year playing Futures and is now playing Challengers. He took a set off Kevin Kim in Chennai and Carlsen in Nottingham . He`s beaten Sherwood once this year so you`re right about being a Brit killer but he has also lost to him too, but mostly he`s been doing pretty unspectacular stuff by the looks of his activity.

dippykitty - Mankad was a formerly a #1 ranked player in the US colleges. Has played fulltime pro circuit only for 2.5 years but he has played Davis Cup for India for some six years now and has some decent experience .. His rank has gone up slowly and steadily over time. Does not have a big serve and is only 5 ft 9+ inch. But he is solid on everything else but a big serve. Moves well, anticipates well, plays well on all courts, solid from baseline and quite good etc etc. No huge spectacular wins but he has had a few top-150 wins over the last year .. Really staretd playeing to potential only after he was 24 years old, last summer. He is probably a top-200 quality player right now.

Listening to Petch and Murray on Sky Sports yesterday and Petchey was talking about how Binghampton is one of those tournaments that makes you realise quickly how badly you need to get into the ATP circuit because of the lack of facilities - so maybe that was the grand plan to focus Andy on his goal. You know 'you can play tournaments like this, or you can go and play with the big boys with all the creature comforts' ;)

Some of the previous thoughts seem a bit far-fetched. Murray will clearly continue in Binghampton until he loses. The points from the quarters on in the challenger will massively outweigh the qualifying (and even first round main draw winners' points in Cincy for that matter). Also, while he has certainly had an impressive summer, Murray would only have a slight chance to win 2 qualifying matches in Cincy against largely top 100 players.
Who knows where he will be down the line, but a tough struggle against Harsh points out that his match against Bogomolov, assuming Murray hangs on tonight, looks to be more or less a toss-up, and those odds would probably apply to any subsequent matches he plays in Binghamton.

20 points for qualifying and losing first round
40 for qualifying and winning 1 round

HOWEVER:
He simply cannot withdraw from Binghamton to play a different ATP event on the same day. He must have an injury or similar excuse to default in a challenger, not just the desire to play a different event. Some of the Americans in the draw have also been offered WC qualifying positions in Cincy, but they will gladly turn those down to continue in Binghamton.

Binghamton Points:
quarterfinal loss: 12
semifinal loss: 22
loss in final: 35
winner: 50

Hope this helps

Murray has played 8 weeks on the trot if I am not mistaken. That is already at least 3 weeks over what anybody should play at a stretch, regardless of how many matches you play a week.

He needs to take the next week off come what may. Finish this event if he feels good enough, and then he should take the next week off to recharge for US Open qualies the week after - or he is looking at playing 10 weeks in a row (or 12 or 13) .. It makes no sense to play like that now.

Petchey needs to take a look at what the heck he is doing. He may already have, and decided that Cinci was out anyway.

First time in ages that Andy's won a match that went to three sets which wasn't held over to the next day. That's a good sign.

Andy's points from his futures win in Spain last August come off this week, according to steveg, so he'll be pleased to have covered that by getting to the QF here, even if he goes no further.

I still think it was a questionable decision to play this tournament, however.

This thread has become pretty amusing.

If Murray loses tomorrow, he could still call the Cincy Masters and 'sign-in' for qualies. The draw will be made at 9 pm EDT (Binghampton and Cincy are in the same time zone). But I agree with Jay, he's played a lot of tennis and he should probably take a week off to rest and get ready for US Open qualies. I don't think he's ever had to qualify for a Slam before, and it can be a pretty daunting task on your first trip. I seriously don't believe that he is going to get a main draw WC for the USO, the Americans are practically arm wrestling each other for those and if Murray or Philipoussis get thrown into the mix, it will be very ugly.

Go Alex!

ustennis

Murray may very well receive a wildcard into the Open. It looks like the USTA may give 1 wildcard to Australia and another to England in exchange for an American wildcard for next year's Australian Open and Wimbledon, respectively. If this trade occurs, I would have to imagine that Murray would be at the top of the LTA's rather short list.

By the way, if anyone is interested in some Open wildcard predictions, here they are in no particular order:

1) Australian Open trade - Chris Guccione
2) Wimbledon trade - Andy Murray

I hope its Andy Murray since I'm a fan. I sometimes wish the USTA would give more wildcards to players not from the US. I know that's what all the tournaments do and everything, but still some foreign players are more deserving than the American wildcards. For example, enough with giving Donald Young a wildcard since he's 0-6 on the ATP circuit. Nothing against him or anything, but I think he's too young right now. Maybe next year or the year after that, but now now. The rest of the Americans seem like the pretty obvious ones on your list. I saw Amer Delic play live last year against Carlos Moya and I was impressed even though he lost He should be getting more wildcards into tournaments (and even Brian Baker too).

Anyway, good luck to Andy here

On Murray at the dbi, thanks Jay for the score updates. I also read you on sportsindia - you must be posting like crazy. Interesting forum there, by the way. I particularly enjoy the philosophical debates on the different degrees of Indianness. There are at least seven levels, apparently. :)

I too am a bit puzzled by the number of consecutive weeks that Andy has chosen to play. Also, it is strange that he loses early enough in Vancouver to play in Montreal qualies but instead accepts a WC into Binghampton. Meanwhile he also asks for a WC in Cincy, knowing that he is likely to advance far enough at Binghampton to prevent him from playing there.

I'd love to hear more about Petchey's interview on Sky - maybe I'll go and look in Andy's forum here.

Michael Chang and Steve Campbell may not like the list either, but there is not a whole lot they can do about it...
Morrison would have a very slight chance if the wc trade were not to occur, but he is 26 and is 3-16 in main tour matches this year.
I am afraid that JMG has no chance whatsoever of receiving a wc. He is now 28 and is struggling mightily to win matches in challengers this summer.

One obvious omission I made on my list was, however, James Blake. It slipped my mind that at the time of the Open entry deadline, he was not ranked high enough to make the cut. If the trade occurs, he will likely take the place of Rajeev Ram or Scoville Jenkins on my list, probably depending on how Rajeev finishes in Binghamton.

I am quite interested in any updates in the Ram / Reynolds and Baker / Widom matches today. I will be checking back.

It is a bit harsh but not entirely incorrect. Harel has not been in great form this year

Looking forward to Alex Bogomolov Jr v Andy Murray

I am tempted to say that both players are fully capable of losing the match almost regardless of how the other plays.

Bogomolov played very well to win Tarzana. As for his form throughout the rest of the year.............

Andy Murray seems to be getting worse by the week. And his bad temper more and more in evidence. Can he get his act together before he is match point down this time?

(Mardy Fish has withdrawn from Cincinnati - I wonder who will get his wildcard)

Well, that is what happens when one plays non-stop for 6 or 8 weeks. And all this confusion with wildcards and all that. I just don't understand what his coach is doing. I guess he knows better than us, but so far it doesn't look, at least to me.

Crazyrobert -- No, I don't have the frioend out there today. Actually it is a friend of Harsh Mankad who has taken off with him to Bronx where Mankad is going for the qualies.

Chalkdust - Thanks. I know, I waste more time than I should, away from work and posting stuff. But heck, we all need our escape from real world once in a while, right? Yeah, the Indians are a philosophical bunch on even tennis matters. After all, we developed the world's earliest philosophies .. :)

Well after all the debate Andy Murray ends up with a wildcard straight into the main draw at Cincinnati after Mardy Fish withdraws.

Will this inspire him to play some decent tennis this evening?

Will this inspire him to play some decent tennis this evening?Maybe he is cultivating his temper tantrums to make himself more attractive to tournament directors. He has certainly got an incredible record in terms of picking up wild cards. Let's hope he takes advantage but I do worry about the amount of tennis he has been playing, especially as he is still growing and has had his share of injury problems.

Dragan, I know Djokovic probably deserves a few WC breaks but he seems to be doing fine on his own.

Thanks for that.

It's not ideal for Murray with Dent thursting for revenge in the Cincinnati Masters.

Then there is the posibility of facing Safin in the second round.

It's a lot for the young man to think about.

However, there is only one thing on my mind.

That's Murray's chance of winning the tournament down the drain.

He'd have to destroy both Bogomolov and Baker to make it through.

Perhaps he'll attack for once - he has the big shots, you see them from time to time, the Johansson match at Queens featured some fierce forehands and the 2nd set against Nalbandian saw Andy taking the initiative.

Might as well give it a go. He doesn't have the fitness to last one long match nevermind two in the same day.

Yeah, his Forehand is great, he should attack and go move up to the net. His Backhand is only good for passing shots or slice:hug:

Never mind Murray's packed Saturday. Poor Alex Bogomolov Jr, he'll have gone to bed knowing he's got 3 matches lined up because he's still in the doubles. If he wins all 3 matches he deserves a hell of a lot of praise and lots of luck in the final.

Murray WILL beat Bogomolov, and all other things being equal would probably beat Baker. The schedule clearly gives Baker a bit of an edge in a possible semi, but i am sure Andy can handle the challenge!

We will find out soon!
