Mardy's actually seeded  16th, the last seed in the draw, so he has a bye.

He'll face the winner of Andy Murray and Flavio Saretta in the second round and could face Hrbaty in the third round and Ancic in the QF (but that would require winning 2 matches :p)

Edit: oh heck why not make the thread about the whole HC season :p

WTT was on here the other night and they showed Mardy's mixed doubles match with Steffi Graf. I actually thought he looked really solid. He hit some absolutely fantastic serves out wide, and he didn't look tentative with his left wrist on his 2-hander at all. I thought it was a really good sign. Only problem is his head - it was WTT so it was meaningless and he could be relaxed and fluid...

They both pulled out. Mardy was hitting about 6pm pacific (like, 3 hours before the match)... he looked rather unhappy but was hitting with his left hand on his BH and stuff and it wasn't taped or anything.

He should never have stayed in the tourney, it was obvious from day 1 he wasn't fit enough to play.

Blake, Fish Receive Cincinnati Wild Cards

By Tennis Week
07/30/2005

A former finalist and a doubles champion will be back in Cincinnati next month. Americans Mardy Fish and James Blake have accepted wild cards into Cincinnati's Western & Southern Financial Group Masters August 15th-21st.

The tournament has four main draw wild cards at its disposal. Wild cards which are typically given to players with significant fan appeal, but with rankings not high enough to allow them direct entry into the tournament. The other two wild cards will be announced prior to the draw ceremony on August 12th.

The 23-year-old Fish was runner-up to former Boca Raton housemate Andy Roddick in the 2003 Cincinnati final. That effort, and a title at Stockholm, helped him finish 2003 ranked a career-high No. 20. Last August, Fish won the silver medal at the Athens Summer Olympic Games.

The 25-year-old Blake won the 2002 Cincinnati doubles title with Todd Martin, his only ATP Masters Series title of any kind. He won a singles title at Washington, D.C. in 2002 and has reached three other finals in his career. He will be making his fourth appearance in Cincinnati where he has reached the round of 16 twice.

Cincinnati’s Western & Southern Financial Group Masters is one of the 13 major events in men’s professional tennis. The four Grand Slams and the nine ATP Masters Series events form the biggest events in men’s tennis and are all mandatory events for players ranked high enough to enter. Players already committed to the men’s Masters main draw include defending champion Andre Agassi and 2003 champion Andy Roddick, Wimbledon champ Roger Federer, French Open champ Rafael Nadal, Australian Open champ Marat Safin, Britain’s Tim Henman, and Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt.

The W&SFG Masters is the oldest tournament in the nation still played in its original city. It is held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, the only tennis facility outside the Grand Slams with more than one permanent stadium. It is located across from Paramount’s Kings Island on Interstate 71 and is approximately one hour from Columbus.

For tickets or information call (513) 651-0303 or go to www.cincytennis.com. Tickets are also available through TicketMaster at (513) 562-4949 or www.ticketmaster.com

look at this :(

Fish withdraws from masters; senior schedule set
2003 finalist has wrist injury

American Mardy Fish, No. 65 in the ATP entry rankings, will not play in the 2005 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters. He returned his wild card today because of an ongoing wrist injury.

Tournament officials, who are permitted to hand out four wild cards to the main draw, said they will name Fish’s replacement Friday afternoon.

Fish was a finalist in Mason in 2003, losing in the championship match to Andy Roddick. Fish has played here three times (2004, 2003, 2000) and has a 5-3 record.

The event begins Friday with the Seniors tournament and goes through the main draw final Aug. 21.

Poor Mardy :( if returning that guy's serve was a problem..... oh gosh. This is from the Connecticut paper
-------------------
As Tampa, Fla., resident Mardy Fish made his way through the Connecticut Tennis Center early Saturday afternoon, he appeared blissfully unaware of the fate that would await him in his opening match two days later.

Fish, like Molik before him, was done in by a case of tennis rust in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Philipp Kohlschreiber on Stadium Court Tuesday afternoon.

Fish, a former top-20 player, had played in one tournament since the French Open as he recovered from wrist surgery. He had high hopes in his first trip to New Haven, but almost from the first point, the overwhelming pain he felt from his wrist was only dulled by the frustration in his game.

"My wrist hurt more than I thought it would," Fish said.

Fish was not offering an excuse nor was he using his ailing wrist as a crutch. However, it was evident rather quickly that Fish's time in the singles draw would be rather brief.

"If he hit the first serve hard, I would have to block it back quickly," Fish said. "That didn't bother me at all. What bothered me was a slower-paced ball when I had to generate my own pace.

The doctor said I can't hurt it any worse, as I said, but it still hurts."

Fish now looks ahead to the U.S. Open with one ATP match victory in his possession since the last week of March.

"I will definitely be happy just being able to play (in the Open)," Fish said. "Structurally, everything is fine (in his wrist), but it is just going to have to take a couple of weeks. I am down from where I was this week practicing. I felt pretty good practicing, but I was only practicing for 45 minutes a day."

Fish isn't expecting to make a run deep into the Open, but he did have optimism for his fellow Americans.

aceit
08-25-2005, 03:25 PM
He won't need to generate his own pace off of Ivo's serve though.

Thanks for the article Deb! Poor Mardy.
