I thought Hanescu was Romanian No. 1 because he ranks higher than Pavel right now,so I misunderstood Ivan was No.2 single player. http://www.mysmilie.de/english/green/smilies/cool/img/017.gif

Regardless of the status, really hope Ivan play much better than Mario becoz I like him much more. http://www.mysmilie.de/english/green/smilies/music/2/44.gif

Ljubicic creates Croatian history
So Ivan Ljubicic did it once again – he carried the flag for Croatia, this time all the way to the semifinals, and for the first time in history. Ljubicic defeated Andrei Pavel 63 64 63 in the fourth rubber in Split, giving Croatia an unbeatable 3-1 lead in this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal against Romania. Croatia will be at home to Russia in September’s semifinals, the first time this young country has appeared in the last four of this historic event.

It is the third time lucky for Croatia in the quarterfinals, having lost quarterfinal ties against Argentina in Buenos Aires (2003), and a year later against Spain in Valencia. But this was a different story.

Ljubicic created history for Croatian tennis against the USA in the first round this year, with two great singles victories against Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, as well as winning the doubles rubber alongside Mario Ancic against the Bryan brothers. So having almost single-handedly taken Croatia into the quarterfinals, this weekend he almost single-handedly took them into their first ever semifinal.

After Pavel had shocked the hosts by defeating Mario Ancic in the first rubber on Friday, Ljubicic won the second rubber against Victor Hanescu, and partnered Ancic to an epic victory over Pavel and Gabriel Trifu in Saturday’s doubles. It was part of the script, then, that he should defeat Andrei Pavel in the reverse singles on Sunday, and indeed he did, making short work of the Romanian no.1.

Pavel held three break points in the third game of the first set, 0-40, but Ljubicic got out of the hole with great serving, and took control of the match by breaking in the sixth game, and went on to take the set.

Pavel came back early in the second set, breaking in the second game, but he couldn’t hold on to the advantage. Ljubicic missed three break chances in the third game, but did not make the same mistake two games later. Ljubicic went on a five game-streak, won the set, and that was the end of Pavel.

"I was mad at myself losing the serve in the second set,” said Ljubicic. “It was all me, and my mistakes, but once I got back on track, I knew I have to win this match in three sets. After the first set I knew I had to finish Pavel off in three".

The Romanian came back from 1-3 to level at 3-all in the third set, but never looked a player who could take this match into the fourth set.

"I sensed early that Pavel was slow, took the advantage of the only break in the first set," said Ljubicic. “The key to the match was the second set, when I got back from 0-3."

After the match, in the middle of wild celebrations, with Queen’s 'We are the champions' being played at high volume, Ljubicic took a camera out of his bag, and took some pictures of the screaming spectators.

"I left my camera in the bag by accident, I'm glad I did it. This will be a memory for the rest of my life."

Moments later he threw his racket to the stands, which two spectators got hold of, and would not let go. After a few seconds, they decided that they would toss a coin to see who would keep this prized souvenir, the racket that won the tie against Romania. Moments later Ljubicic also threw his shirt into the stands.
"This was one of my best feelings on a tennis court,” said Ljubicic. “The spectators were great, I had goose bumps for the whole of the third set."

Andrei Pavel meanwhile could only refelect on the match, and the first set in particular.

"It was difficult to play in this situation, trying to get on level trems, and give Hanescu a chance. If I broke early it could have been a different story, but it did not happen. I played in a soccer atmosphere, and if that will be the case in the semifinals, Croiatia has a chance against Russia or anybody.”

Mario Ancic then added to the celebrations with a 76(3) 76(8) victory over Victor Hanescu in the dead rubber to make the final score 4-1 to Croatia.

Opening day's singles split

Ivan Ljubicic had to dig deep. He went out to play Mikhail Youzhny with Croatia, the home side, trailing 0-1. Ljubicic knew if his nation had a chance of progressing he had to beat the talented Russian. In three hours and three minutes Ljubicic played some of the best diving tennis of his career to level the semifinal of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas by scoring a 36 63 64 46 64 victory.

“It was a tough match and I didn’t start well,” said Ljubicic. “I played in the beginning the way I had to finish – too aggressive and I didn’t feel the ball straightaway. But I picked up my game and in the second and third sets I played really good.

“I had chances in the fourth to finish it of but unfortunately I didn’t make it so I found myself in a fifth set. It was a little tricky in the beginning but I had break points at one 1-1. I finally broke him in an amazing game at 2-2. I served great throughout the fifth set.”

One service break midway through the first set was all Youzhny needed to get the early advantage. The Russian was striking the ball cleanly and he had Ljubicic under pressure, but Ljubicic responded to the crowds chants of “Lubo! Lubo!” and he broke the Russian’s serve in the second game.

The Croat then went on to create a 4-1 lead before levelling the match in 29 minutes.

The third set went with serve till the seventh game, and on his second break point Ljubicic reached up at a lob that Youzhny did not send far enough back. Ljubicic stretched up and powered it away to the sideline for a winner. Three games later the set was his when he pressured the Russian into sending a backhand volley into the net.

The Croat had some chances in the fourth but the Russian was able to stave off trouble, and then broke Ljubicic to take the match into a deciding set and a cliffhanger.

The fifth game with Youzhny serving was pretty much the match. The Russian would save break points. The local crowd would get into a frenzy as they chanted and cheered for their man. It was getting to ear-piercing decibels but what an atmosphere it was. This is what Davis Cup tennis is all about.

That game produced some magical tennis with the point that brought up break point absolute desperation tennis from both men. Ljubicic got it when Youzhny dove for one return and was on the court as his fast acting opponent pounced on the chance, and rifled away a winner.

“I had the feeling that I had to do something special to break him,” said Ljubicic. “He is a realy strong player, really strong from the baseline, good serves, so I had to do something special and that’s exactly what I did.”

It was virtually the match right there. Youzhny continued to try and stem the tide but Ljubicic, who had hit some serves at 228km per hour, kept his nose in front. Soon after it was all over and the stadium went wild.

So after the first day the tie stands at 1-1. Day two will see the doubles rubber between Maria Ancic and Ljubicic against Youzhny and Dimitry Tursunov.

“It’s gonna be big. Of course it’s not easy to play doubles on this surface because it’s pretty quick and tough to return. There won’t be many rallies so you are going to have one or two chances to make it, and if you don’t - bad luck. We are going to have to be focused and hope for the best,” said Ljubicic.

Croatia win dramatic doubles to move step closer to final

It came as a surprise that when Croatia broke serve to win the crucial doubles rubber against Russia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, that the roof over the Sportski Centar Gripe didn’t get blown off. The crowd erupted with such a deafening roar that the stadium which overlooks the Adriatic Sea, seemed to shake.

Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic defeated Igor Andreev, who came in as a replacement for Mikhail Youzhny, and Dimitry Tursunov, in three hours 37 minutes, 62 46 76 36 64.

The standard of tennis was probably not memorable but at the same time it was gripping. The crowd was stunning and while there were times when they came close to unruliness, the noise and atmosphere they created more than made up for everything else. This match proved yet again that in Davis Cup players find that little bit more because they are playing not as individuals but as a team and for their country.

The Australian great Neale Fraser, himself a player and a former captain, once said that Davis Cup makes men out of boys.

“It’s great stuff. Every time we play Davis Cup here in Croatia, it’s an unbelievable energy we have from the crowd,” said Ljubicic. “We won our last three doubles in Croatia in five sets and in the beginning of the fifth set I told Mario we were going to make it again. We always did it and we are going to do it again … and with this crowd everything is much easier.”

Ancic opened the doubles just as he had done in every set of the singles match he played the day before. Soon he and Ivan Ljubicic were up a service break when they broke Dimitry Tursunov’s serve in the fourth game. The Croats stretched the lead to 5-2 and broke Tursunov again to seal the set in 29 minutes.

Again Ancic started the set but this time he dropped his serve. Igor Andreev staved off break points to make it 2-0 for Russia but the Croats came back by breaking Tursunov to level at 2-2. The reprieve didn’t last long because Ancic was broken a game later and the Russian kept their noses in front.

However, the set turned rowdy when the crowd didn’t like a call in the eighth game when a ball was called good but appeared out and the booing reached painful decibels. The set ended when Tursunov powered a smash away and the crowd amusingly was not happy.

In the third set with Tursunov serving in the sixth game a point was overruled by the chair umpire Carlos Ramos. Tursunov had played a brilliant passing shot down the line which the crowd thought was out but it was called in. It would have given Croatia two break points but instead it was 30/30. To say the crowd voiced their feelings would be an understatement.

They went to the tiebreak and the Russians raced to a 5-2 lead. Incredibly the Croats clawed back much to the fans delight. Five points fell in a row and the set ended with Ljubicic playing a delicately angled forehand drop volley.

But the lead enjoyed by Croatia evaporated when the Russians forged back to win the fourth set.

“We have been in this situation before, me and him and have played a lot of five sets and we didn’t panic,” said Ancic. “They served unbelievable and it was really hard to play doubles on this surface but we kept calm and went for our chance.”

The fifth went with serve with the locals always one game ahead having started serving in the set. But then that chance Ancic and Ljubicic were waiting for came. Andreev was serving to stay in the match but the Croats went on the attack and broke serve as the place erupted.

Now to the reverse singles and Ljubicic and Nikolay Davydenko play first followed by Ancic against Youzhny.

“What Nikolay showed on Friday was unbelievable, he played a great match against Mario but we are different types of players,” said Ljubicic. “Mario was at the net all the time and he was giving him a target. I’m going to try not to give him any targets and try to play from the baseline is not going to be easy but I have to serve well and hope that the crowd is going to help me also.”

Croatia to travel to Slovak Republic for final

The last thing anyone would have seen before leaving the Sportski Centar Gripe following Croatia’s superb 3-2 win over Russia in the semifinals of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, was the scoreboard. It read: “Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final – CROATIA 5 SLOVAK REPUBLIC 0." ( )

The sense of excitement and euphoria with Croatia’s victory in reaching its first ever Davis Cup final was amazing. For such a small country to achieve something as big as this is what dreams are made of.

The captain Niki Pilic says for him this is incredibly emotional even though he has been in the situation before. But before he was captaining Germany. Now he is captaining the country of his birth and this semifinal win was in the city he was born in.

“It is a very different emotion being captain of Croatia and it is very difficult to describe it in words,” he said. “Today I was really weak when match point came for Ivan Ljubicic. I am very proud and I believe with the belief we have that we can give a lot of people spirit and inspiration in our country.”

Pilic said he will assemble his troops probably the Saturday before the final in Bratislava, but before that he has to decide who will be the fourth member of the side.

“I am telling you now for the first time. About ten or 12 days before there will be a one-off match at my tennis academy in Munich between Goran Ivanisevic and Sasa Tuksar (the current fourth player in the team) and whoever wins that will be the fourth player for the final. The match will be on a fast Rebound Ace and I think that will help Goran,” said Pilic smiling and leaning towards Ivanisevic.

He made it clear that whoever loses will still most definitely be part of the team that will be in Bratislava for the final.

Ivanisevic, who is like a god in the country, has played Davis Cup but never been in this situation before. He said it was tougher for him to be sitting courtside while the matches were happening. He expressed his great pride in the team and said this achievement “is an unbelievable thing for Croatian tennis, Croatian sport and Croatia”.

Ljubicic, who showed all the relief and happiness one would expect after beating Nikolay Davydenko 63 76 64 to cement Croatia’s place in the final, says he is curious to see what surface the Slovaks will chose.

“It’s going to be very interesting to see what they are going to chose for the surface because obviously for us our less favourite surface is clay, but its not even the favourite for them, so it’s going to be very interesting what they do,” said Ljubicic.

The Croat said he wasn’t sure which team would be regarded as the favourite because every match is going to be open.

Ivanisevic said: “Davis Cup is tricky and hopefully after this match Ivan’s confidence will be high. He can lift his form more and play better and better. The next two months are going to be the most important of his life, especially the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of December.”

Where they would play? ... If they play in Split I will bet on Ivan, for me his best chance to beat Roger are in indoor :)
