Murray targets further progress

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41289000/jpg/_41289311_murray203.jpg

British teenager Andy Murray looks to continue his rise up the rankings this week in Aptos, California.
The 18-year-old, who has been awarded a wildcard, takes on Canadian Frederic Niemeyer on Tuesday and could then face second seed Justin Gimelstob.

The tournament is a Challenger event, a level below the ATP tour.

Murray, who reached the third round at Wimbledon on his debut, went out of last week's Newport grass-court event in the second round.

Go Andy!! :woohoo:

I've seen Tursunov on hardcourt last year and he is very dangerous. I saw him at the Long Island tourney and he reached the semis I believe. He had to retire against Lleyton Hewitt. If he was 100 percent he would of given Lleyton a real challenge.

From BBC Sport, today:

Andy Murray hammered experienced Israeli Harel Levy to move into the semi-finals of the Challenger event in Aptos, California.
The 18-year-old Scot, who was awarded a wildcard for the event, came through 6-4 6-0 against the world number 266.

Levy played both singles matches in Israel's defeat by Great Britain in the Davis Cup in March, losing to Greg Rusedski and beating David Sherwood.

Murray will now play American Bobby Reynolds in the last four

I've no idea. His photo's from Queens isn't it? I can only guess you have to play in a top event and attract photographers before the ATP puts a picture of you up. Although, for example, Stanislas Wawrinka hasn't got a photo yet and he reached the final of Gstaad and as home favourite attracted loads of photographers. So to conclude I have absolutely no idea  :p

Murray marches on in Challenger

British teenager Andy Murray eased into round two of the Granby Challenger in Canada on Tuesday with a win over fellow Briton Richard Bloomfield.
The 18-year-old was well in control in the early stages of Tuesday's match and cruised through the opening set.

Things got tense in the second as Bloomfield battled back, but Murray held on to win 6-2 7-6 (7-5).

The young Scot now faces Romania's Florin Mergea, who crushed Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky 6-4 6-2.

Murray eases into quarter-finals

British number three Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals of the Granby Challenger with a 6-3 7-5 win over Romanian Florin Mergea.
Mergea, 20, had little answer to Murray's powerful game as the Briton set up a last-eight meeting with Gregory Carraz.

Murray, 18, has already won a Challenger title this year, triumphing at Aptos, California, a fortnight ago.

His world ranking has soared to 156 in the last two months.

Bit of a dissappointment really. Carraz is nothing more than a solid veteran pro, and Andy already beat him at Newport. Still setbacks are likely. We can't expect him to win every challenger he plays in. I would be more worried if this time next year he is still playing challengers and still losing to this kind of player. Andy has loftier ambitions, hopefully he can get back to winning ways next week as he builds up to the US open.

Murray foiled in second title bid

Andy Murray's bid for a second successive title ended on Friday with a quarter-final loss to Gregory Carraz in the Granby Challenger in Canada.
Carraz took the first set comfortably but Scotland's Murray, 18, made the second seed work hard for his victory.

The Frenchman eventually won 6-3 7-6 (9/7) against the eighth-seeded Murray, who won his first career Challenger title in California two weeks ago.

Murray is ranked 156th and will rise again after two wins in Quebec.

Easy win for Murray in Vancouver

British number three Andy Murray cruised into the second round of the Vancouver Open with a 6-3 6-2 win over Marc Kimmich of Australia.
The 18-year-old Scot justified his position as fourth seed for this Challenger event, the second tier of the ATP Tour, with a 6-3 6-2 success.

Murray, who won his first Challenger event in California last month, will now face Cecil Mamiit.

The American won 4-6 6-2 6-1 against the Czech Republic's Tomas Cakl.

Murray advances to quarter-finals

Britain's Andy Murray looks set to continue his march up the rankings after beating Cecil Mamiit to reach the quarter-finals at the Vancouver Open.
The fourth seed lost the first set on a tie-break, but fought back to secure a 6-7 (7-4) 6-3 6-4 victory.

Murray has impressed on the Challenger circuit since his headline-grabbing displays at Wimbledon.

The Scot, who will face Paul Baccanello in the last eight, has moved up to 153 in the world rankings.

In-form Murray moves into top 150

British teenager Andy Murray has broken into the world's top 150 for the first time in his career.
Following his quarter-final appearance in a Challenger event in Vancouver, the 18-year-old rose eight places to 145th in the new ATP rankings.

Murray can boost his position further in New York this week where he plays in another Challenger tournament.

Tim Henman remains 13th in the new rankings, with Greg Rusedski down three places to 40th.

No wonder its a three hour drive from NYC. If it was a bit closer I might of thought about going. However, there's a challenger near me next week that's only a 20 minute drive. I know Andy is going to play the Cincy qualies, but a part of me hopes there's still a chance he could come here.

My only concern is that if he wins he may be unlilekely to be able to make it to cincy qualifying! There is a good chance he will still be in binghampton come the weekend which would be a shame as the qualifying field is very strong and Andy would benefit from the challenge of the full ATP Master's event!

Murray hits back for New York win

Andy Murray escaped a match point to defeat Harsh Mankad in the second round of the dBI Tennis Challenger tournament in Binghamton, New York.
Murray lost the first set 7-5 and looked on the verge of going out in the tie-break before winning it 10-8 and then wrapping up the final set 6-0.

But the Scot struggled throughout the match with his first serve.

"I was surprised," said Murray. "I didn't play that great today. I was a bit lazy and tired."

Murray now faces American Alex Bogomolov Jr in the quarter-finals.

Unofficially (as always), from a buddy at the tourney today:
Murray leads Bogomolov: 6-4, 3-2 (on serve)

Evidently, Bogomolov led 3-0 (double break) in the first and broke a third time later in the set. But Murray broke a fourth time for 6-4.

TENNIS NEWS

MURRAY MARCHES ON
Andy Murray overcame the first of two obstacles in his bid to reach the final of the dBI Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, New York, on Saturday night with a straight-sets defeat of Alex Bogomolov Jnr.

Murray, who will now face Brian Baker later on, saw off his seventh-seeded American opponent 6-4 6-4 to reach the last four in a match postponed by heavy rain from Friday.

It continues an exciting day for Scottish teenager Murray after he was earlier handed a wild card into next week's Cincinnati Masters Series event.

The 18-year-old has been drawn to face American Taylor Dent in the first round.

It appears a good draw for Murray, who beat Dent in straight sets earlier this summer at the Stella Artois Championship, and should he score a repeat victory, fourth seed Marat Safin would await in round two.

Murray is already closing in on his target of finishing in the top 100 by the end of the season, and he could yet reach it before the autumn, or even before the US Open at the end of August.

He is currently ranked a career-high 145th by the ATP, and is climbing week on week, with another rise expected on Monday.

There is total prize-money of £1.4million on offer in Cincinnati, a far cry from the Challenger events where Murray has spent much of his fledgling career.

The event in Binghampton has a purse of just £29,000, which will be divided between 32 players.

Quote from official site

Andy Murray got a bit of luck today as he won both matches to get to the final. In his first match with Bogomolov, Jr. the heat was brutal as they engaged in long rallies throughout the match. This match was full of service breaks, 7 total in the first set. In the 10th game, on match point, the players exchanged a great rally where Murray was dictating and pushing Bogomolov, Jr. side to side and then finally he put up a lob. With Murray right on the net, he had to scramble a couple of steps to his backhand side but came up with the winner overhead crosscourt to end it. Great athleticism in that point all around. Both players were exhausted, as demonstrated by Bogomolov, Jr. sitting in a official’s chair prior to match point to catch his breath. Also in that final game, Murray almost came up with another brilliant down the line running backhand, like he did with Mankad to save match point in that 2nd round match. Today's 1st match lasted 1:40 minutes.

In the 2nd semifinal, talk about luck for Andy. It started thundering just as Brian was digging out his racket on centre court. The rain came and the players wouldn't get back out until 5pm. Brian must have been shaking his head quite a bit because no doubt he had the edge if they had started 2 hours earlier. Some tough breaks in tennis, but that was potentially a big one. If Baker had won this one, that US Open wild card would have looked good.

So they start at 5, and Murray broke right away for a 2-0 lead. In the ensuing game, on Murray’s serve and game point, the chair overruled a Murray volley on the far side of the court that was initially ruled in. Murray went to his chair and sat in disbelief. Talk about emotion on the court like John McEnroe... Andy was entertaining with his talking and body language and continual evil eye on the ball marks. In the next game, the chair umpire again overruled when Baker’s 1st serve to the ad court was called out. Murray argued the over-rule and continued to demonstrate his frustration for the next few points and Baker won the game for a 3-1 Murray advantage. At this point, you wondered if we were headed for a similar match to the Mankad one... lots of frustration and distraction for Murray. At 4-1, love-40 Murray again disagreed with a call and got a code violation warning for audible obscenity after approaching the chair. The crowd starting getting behind Baker. Maybe that is a difference in Murray, because he put it aside and broke again in the 7th game, when Baker put 2 relatively easy backhands into the net... that's when you knew Baker wasn't having an "on day".

Quote

Andy Murray looked relatively relaxed and cool-tempered today, as he took his 2nd Challenger title over Alejandro Falla 7-6(3),6-3. The match started out quick as both players held serve easily in their first 2 attempts, losing only 1 point each on their own serve through 3-2, Falla. In the next game, Falla struck first as Murray hit his first double fault to get behind 15-30. “The concentration is shocking” Murray yelled out. On Falla’s 3rd break point chance, he came up with a cross-court winner on the run to go up 4-2. Murray had displayed a temper early in his matches all week, but that 6th game was really the only game where he was obviously upset and talking a lot. Murray stormed right back, breaking Falla and in the process winning 11 straight points (15-0, 5-4 Murray on his serve). In that first set tiebreak, Murray came up with multiple cross-court winners on the run to get a 4-0 lead and then eventually one more forehand winner for the set.

In the 2nd set, both players again held serves relatively easy. In the 8th game at 4-3, Murray broke as Falla hit errors on the last 2 points. Murray closed it out with 2 serves that were un-returnable in the final game. “It was pretty tough today, I had to play 2 matches yesterday and it was really hot. Alejandro doesn’t make too many mistakes and I had to do a lot of running, but today I’m very happy that I managed to win,” said Murray commenting on the match.

Now on to the commentary. What did we witness today? There were still some locals who are tennis player or just athletics fans and well, they missed it. It is underlined by that one situation in the 6th game. Murray double faults, he comments on his concentration... ends up losing the game, but then he goes on to break back and then some, winning the next 11 points. 11 points in a row, not too typical. Now, you can also point out that after that 11th point, he ended up losing his service game. Pretty safe to say that in losing his concentration a bit again (he double faulted), it shows that he felt he could turn it on when he wanted to and was in control... he sold us on the idea. He seemed almost casual at times chasing down the balls, and that flat backhand flicker... won him alot of points.

Andy has a temper and even can be dramatic (when he pulled at his hamstring on that one point early in the match), but to see him channel that into winning the points he needed to, was impressive. Recall that he was down 5-1 in that tiebreak with Harsh Mankad... sure Harsh choked, but Andy certainly could have bagged it... he could have used the couple of days rest. Andy could have a good sense of humor too, he hinted at the possibility in his commentary to himself, that most fans couldn't hear. It was humorous when he gave his thumbs up when he'd hit an error. Ability to be intense. Another look at this guy was when he went over and hugged his coach... that tells a bit of his story too. No player has ever come to Binghamton starting out their pro career like Andy... not even most of the top guys in the world have started their 1st 8 or 9 tournaments like this... 3rd round of his 1st Grand slam. Also have to mention the British enthusiasm. Andy's highlights were on the BBC website... our key folks involved had alot of attention from Great Britain, even just the fans from there. They said the energy was addictive and one of us even wanted to move to Scotland. This website had almost double the traffic this year. Do a search on Andy Murray & tennis and you'll see alot.
As they say, "Brilliant". The British are coming, eh? (One of our early headlines on the main draw) Well they came, and conquered, and now its off to the Masters Series. See the quotes from Murray all the way at the bottom, after the doubs.

Very smart. He needs a rest especially since last week was Davis Cup and now your first career final. Smart move, indeed.

Good Luck in qualifying
