Here is a brief report on the 2 matches i saw - Vik v Hilton and Bogdanovic v Bachelot.

Robin Vik was impressive and a class above Mark Hilton thanks to superior movement, consistency and guile. Much of his style and appearance appears to be modelled on Yevgeny Kafelnikov. After saving a breakpoint in his opening service game Vik was untroubled on serve until serving for the match at 6-5 second set (saved 2 BPs with good first serves). Hilton was regularly threatened on serve, but competed well in the second set and Vik could easily have been made to rue missed opportunities early in the set.

The difference between Alex Bogdanovic and Jean-Francois Bachelot was a question of belief on the big points. In a high quality match Bachelot probably won as many points as Bogdanovic. Indeed 5 consecutive Bogdanovic service games went to deuce in the first set, including 3 BPs, whilst Bachelot was never troubled. Again in the tiebreak Bachelot was 2 minibreaks up, but Bogdanovic was solid when it mattered. The second set was more even, though Bachelot missed 4 more BPs, but it was no surprise when Bachelot faltered in game 12 - a rapier return at his feet creating 2 match points, before an unforced error to end it.
