Ever watched Gaelic football from Ireland? It is probably where Aussie Rules came from.

Theres no real info on exactly how much of an influence Rugby and Gaelic football had on the creation of Aussie rules. I just had a look, and it seems as though a game created by the Aboriginies, 'Marn Grook' was fairly similar, at least in one of the basics (they would drop kick a ball, others would leap in the air to catch it).

We actually have an international series each year (best of 3) between players from our official football league, the AFL, and Irish Pro Gaelic Football players, in a hybrid version of the two games. Although its a hellova lot more like Gaelic football than Aussie rules (ie. the ball used is a gaelic football one)

You'd be surprised how old Aussie rules is though. The rules/league for Gaelic football werent made official/codified etc, until 1887, whereas Aussie rules was codified almost 30 years earlier, in 1858. I think the Melbourne Football club is one of the worlds oldest sporting clubs, seeing as it was established in that same year.

there, more info than you'd care to know :)

just kiddin', Auscon (although a college guy pal who was a cheerleader was the best athlete I knew on campus). Here's part of what he and his team helped invent. It's called the Wolf Wall:
http://www.americancheerleader.com/images/10_03/pyramid3.jpg

http://www.americancheerleader.com/backissues/oct03/pyramids.php

Wolf Wall
First Built in: 1986
Location: campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC
Inventors: 1985-1986 Red squad under head coach Cathy Buckey
What’s in a Name: dubbed for NC State’s mascot, the Wolfpack, and its resemblance to a wall
Big Debut: 1986 UCA College Nationals.
Random Fact: NC State won a National title the very first time they used the pyramid in its routine.

After tennis, I would have to say baseball, veryveryclosely followed by college basketball (not too keen on the NBA except for the Spurs because normally the NBA teams don't really go all out until the last 1.25 quarters), then American football.

Also like soccer and get pretty jazzed when the winter/summer Olympics are around so I can have fun watching sports such as track and field, swimming and speed skating that I don't normally get a chance to watch watch but can be really exciting.

I want to change my choice from July last year when I listed Australian Rules Football as my #1. I really lost my passion for it recently and football (the real one that ignorant people like to call soccer) has taken over as my favourite sport.

I've always loved football but The World Cup and the interest in Australia I think helped ignite my love for the sport even more and I've become a huge follower of the major Australian A-League.

So it's

actually, tennis has never been my favorite sport. it's been easily outdistanced by football (soccer) since like forever. though i grew up with germ antennis heroes becker, graf and stich, soccer has always had a greater impact on my interest in sports. the world cup win in 1990 and the euro 1996 probably also played a big role.

The sport I hate is swimmming. It ruins the first week of olympics in Australia as all there is on TV is up themselves Australian swimmers meanwhile the other great sports in the olympics are neglected. It is particularly frustrating when the swimming clashes with Athletics and Cycling.

damn, when I caught a glimpse of the picture as a scrolled down I thought you were going to say dog fighting.

I'm partial to a bit of horse dancing myself aka dressage

Been doing that for a long time too, but had to make a choice, horses or dogs, because you have to stick to just 1 sport if you want to get the results, and for me it was dogs.

Well, you're not my "target audience", since you go beyond illustrated step-by-step guidelines... it isn't because you're male of course...

Tennis is the only sport I follow regularly. ;)

I don't really have a 2nd favorite sport - I sort of watch various sports that I come across on TV as I channel surf. But Basketball would be the one I watch the most out the bunch (the others are baseball, track & field, golf, cycling, and maybe auto racing and soccer if I'm really bored).

actually, soccer is my no 1 sport, followed by tennis. Then it's a toss-up between biathlon and alpine skiing.

And when I was much younger (during my teenage years) I used to be a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE basketball fanatic. :)

In the last couple of years:

- to watch and read:

1) Tennis
2) Volleyball
3) nothing

- to play:

1) Tennis
2) Table-tennis
3) Volleyball
4) Chess

I don't care about world table-tennis but love to play it :)

My job at the front desk of a sport centre gets me free access to the tennis courts. But other than playing doubles with my gf, I don't play much tennis either.

Pity there can be only 10 options in the poll, hence so many votes for Other.

Cricket top to watch, followed by rugby and baseball,

Only sport I play is table tennis.
