Hasn't been a good week for the TH players . . .

Good luck to Michel! SOMEBODY HAS TO WIN THROUGH!!! </desperate>

Sjengster
02-25-2003, 04:14 PM
Well, Carlsen said he didn't relish the thought of playing Kratochvil first round, so he must have a good game to play old Kenneth, but then of course he will have the crowd against him... should be an interesting encounter, certainly the best of the first-round matches on paper.

TennisHack
02-25-2003, 04:20 PM
Well, they are tied in their head-to-head, which only enhances the interest of this match:

Head to Head: Tied 1-1

2001 Shanghai (hard), SF -- Kratochvil 6-2, 6-4
2002 Halle (grass), R16 -- Carlsen 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Michel has already been pegged as a grass player, so that's a pretty impressive win in Halle (though he's always done best in Nottingham). But, he's had plenty of time to wind down from his Davis Cup triumph, and had to retire from his first match post-DC with a toe problem.

I just want him to do well because I know he's perfectly able to. Carlsen did say that he doesn't relish playing Kratochvil, but then, he will have the crowd on his side -- is the Danish crowd boisterous?

TennisHack
02-25-2003, 04:22 PM
Oh, and did I mention they are perfectly even on the year? Same Champions Race position, same win/loss ratio . . .

Doris Loeffel

Gooo Michel

but first gooo Marc!!

he's leading 2:1

Sjengster
02-25-2003, 04:26 PM
I shouldn't imagine that the Danish crowd will be throwing things at Kratochvil or trying to put him off his rhythm - most Northern European tennis crowds create an atmosphere as flat as a stone, from Germany (saw Leipzig last year on the WTA and you could hear a pin drop during matches) to Sweden (whose fans only started to get excited when they realised their team could actually beat Brazil on the final day in DC).

Mind you, there aren't many Danes around in the tournament, and Carlsen is their no. 1 ahead of Pless, so they won't want to see a home player losing early.

TennisHack
02-25-2003, 04:32 PM
Well, we all saw what happened in the Netherlands during their Davis Cup tie -- that was pretty horrible! Unfortuantely the only thing that seems to help Michel keep his head was having someone there to keep him calm. Perhaps Rosset will stick around after his match? ;)

Rosset 3-2* Dell'acqua

Doris Loeffel
02-25-2003, 04:33 PM
that would be good for Michel I guess

Sjengster
02-25-2003, 04:36 PM
Yes, I must admit that I would never have pegged the Dutch down as wannabe-South Americans in terms of their vociferous support for the home player... I suppose that shows that forms of extremism can exist anywhere, although I'll give up tennis permanently the day I see a Swedish crowd hurling abuse at players on court and shouting in between serves.

TennisHack
02-25-2003, 04:39 PM

Maybe its something special to Scandinavia, but I love the Swedish fans!! Soo funny at the Aussie Open last year, cheering their man to victory :) A close second would be the Finnish fans who turn out in (albeit smaller) hordes for Jarkko. They just seem so happy go lucky :) and I, too, would be disappointed if they started getting vicious.

from the official site:

25-02-03
German qualifier sends 7. seed out in first round
Tuesday afternoon’s matches turned out to be tough on the seeded players.

The biggest surprise was delivered by German qualifier Tomas Behrend who had to fight hard but never the less managed to defeat seed No. 7, Croatian star in the making, Mario Ancic.

The match was as long as it was well played, but in three exiting sets the 28 year old overcame the favourite 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2). Behrend had the chance to decide it in two sets but missed out on the two match points he had in the second set.

“I’ve learned that it’s no use thinking to much about that. You just have to concentrate on the next ball,” said Behrend who found that is was little things that tipped the match in his favour.

“I served well. That was important, because as it turned out I only had one break. But I always felt, that I was closer to winning than losing the match,” explained the German, ranked 145.

But at the moment the ranking isn’t the most important issue for Behrend.

“My objective for this year is to improve my game, then the results will come. If you set up a goal such as to be in the top 100 you also put yourself under pressure, and your ranking also depends on your opponents,” found Behrend.

Ancic was obviously disappointed with losing.

“I wasn’t as aggressive as I wanted to be. He had some matches behind him, so he was pretty confident. I knew him from before but I was just too passive,” said Ancic who was not happy about losing yet another match in a third set tiebreak. Over the past couple of weeks that has happened to him several times.

“My objective for this year is to win some third sets 7-6,” he commented ironically.

Earlier in the afternoon, in a match dominated by the players’ serving qualities, Dutchman Martin Verkerk, seed No. 6, was eliminated from Copenhagen Open in his first round match by Anthony Dupuis. The frenchman had little problem ousting Verkerk in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

What the hell is that trophy that Guga is holding in your avatar, Lee? A giant pear?

Well I must say, you lot all get very worked up about a bloke with floppy hair and a dodgy serve, don't you?

Just kidding, just kidding. I hope that "Scratchvil" (as one of the Sky Sports presenters ingeniously mispronounced his name last year) can close out a tight match for once.

M. Kratochvil def. K. Carlsen 6:7 (3) 6:3 6:4

"Scratchvil" is far better than "Crotchville", which is what they call him on another tennis board that I post on :o

Well there we go, just a routine win wasn't it? I'm amazed that you people can get so worried about it...

There is an extensive discussion in Juanqui chat thread. I have no idea exactly what it is but there are clearer pic in that thread too so you can make your own decision :D :D

This is Guga's trophy from Acapulco 2001.

Scratchvil lol

Well I always overreact when one of "my" boys plays

And Krati really needs all the support he can get.

Now I'm off to my warm bed - starting to get chilly here in the office.

Se ya all tomorrow

I think that I'd almost rather not bring home a trophy, than have to lug around that thing...

It's either a pear, a bell, or a somewhat misshapen silver-plated version of a German coal-scuttle helmet. Take your pick.

And don't worry, I don't criticise anyone for getting worked up in a match - it's just funny when you read through live scoring threads and watch the encouragements and exhortations steadily mount up as the match progresses.

Mhm, are there any seeds left in this tourney?

The results are like from some challenger or grand slam :o

I also find scoring threads very amusing... It sort of the same idea as an excited sports fan yelling at the TV, but it's far more amusing to see it it written form...

E.g. 'FIGHT, ZELJKO!' - is this a boxing match, or what?

Yes, after I had left and was suffering through one last class -- but boy did I feel vindicated when I saw the scoreline!!

CONGRATS, DAHLING! He next faces Jean-Rene Lisnard.

Thanks for cheering, everyone. Doris is right -- Micha needs all the support he can get :)
