FINLAND - BULGARIA (Helsinki, red clay)

FINLAND
68. Jarkko Nieminen
212. Tuomas Ketola
648. Lauri Kiiski
818. Tommi Lenho

BULGARIA
340. Todor Enev
441. Ilia Kushev
562. Radoslav Lukaev
587. Yordan Kanev

Finland is playing with team of the 1st round team including Jarkko Nieminen, Tuomas Ketola, Lauri Kiiski and Tommi Lenho. As in March, there are again some good players (Paukku, L.Ketola, T.Nieminen, Rämmal), who are on Future entry lists in that week. Lenho's form could be enough for the Bulgarians, cause he won the Finland F1 future, beating a top500 player.

I hope the clay won't be a negative factor. Jarkko is playing 5 tournaments in a row on clay at the moment, so maybe it was his choice to play this tie on clay as well. But the problem is that Ketola hardly wins a match there, which is the chance for the Bulgarian team. Another bad news is that Tuomas got a knee injury in week 26, I hope he will be okay.

This is going to be an interesting tie, because there is a little chance for Bulgaria to beat even Nieminen/Ketola, on the other hand Finland would have even a chance without their two best players.

On the Daviscup-site, Ivaylo Traykov is in the team instead of Kanev.

At the moment, I expect Nieminen/Lukaev and Ketola/Enev to play on Friday.

Thanks to all voters! ;)

Tuomas Ketola - Todor Enev
Jarkko Nieminen - Radoslav Lukaev
T.Lenho/L.Kiiski - I.Kushev/J.Kanev
Jarkko Nieminen - Todor Enev
Tuomas Ketola - Radoslav Lukaev

So the tie starts with that dangerous match. Enev has to win if they want to have a chance. Come on Tuomas!

The bulgarian players don't stand a chance against Nieminen. Both games will be 3:0 because of his class and great performance on clay.

Our first racket Enev prefers faster surfaces in last years and specially hard. But the thing is Ketola is too poor on clay. He may have some problems with Enev and even more with Lukaev which favourite surface is clay.

Interesting fact is that Enev and Nieminen were doubles partners in 1999 (USA F16 Futures).

By the way it should be very hard for Ketola against Lukaev. Lukaev is much better then Enev on clay. And not only... :D

I have news about today's matches:

Ketola really lost his 4 final service games. So he served for the match twice and had matchpoint at 6-5 (40-30), when he double faulted. At 3-all in the final set, Enev had cramps and got a time warning. Enev said that it was the first time in his career to have crampsand was angry cause he could have won in four sets. Enev played defensively and had to run much more than Ketola.

Nieminen said that it was difficult to find a rhythm, because Lukaev played many risky shots.

Captain Berner said that he knows who will play in doubles, but didn't say who it is.

Can you say something about the attendance? I read there is only capacity for 700 people. Was it at least sold out?

Mario66
07-16-2005, 10:07 AM
No it wasn't, but surprising, the atmosphere was quite good. I think Friday is not the best time for some people to come and watch tennis, don't know. And I guess Sunday will be sold out.

The chair umpire was sometimes kind of a joke. One time, when Jarkko should have been 0-30 up on Lukaev's serve, he said 15-15. Well, the game continued, and Lukaev won 3 straight points and umpire thought that game was now won by Lukaev and said "game Bulgaria". Many people was very confused, like me, and Lukaev needed to correct the score to the umpire saying "it's 40-30". The umpire then just said "Oh sorry, 40-30".

The doubles match will be very important, and I don't know, does Jarkko play it. Berner had said that: "Jarkko served well against Lukaev and serve is very important in doubles" so let's see what happens...

By the way, I agree with tennisman (the guy next to me) and JMG, Anu is quite hot.

That was even worse than the losses against Luxembourg and Israel last year. I don't get it how a team can destroy the whole home court advantage. Everybody, really everybody knew that Finland would probably win 5-0 on indoors, but they choose to play on clay. Berner made the second big fault with the doubles. Nieminen/Ketola is so much better than Nieminen/Kiiski. I mean Kiiski has no results in doubles. Why is Lenho in the team if he doesn't get a match? I'm sure that Ojala and Lassi Ketola are also better in doubles than Kiiski is. Nieminen/Kiiski won only in 4 very tight sets in Ghana, it was obvious that they would need a better match to beat the Bulgarians. So why not Nieminen/Ketola? He hadn't cramps on Friday and even if they would have lost it, Lenho would have been there to play Lukaev at the end.

Now a second year in Group II, which is ridiculous for a team like Finland. In 2002 they were in the world group play-offs and now that. Last year they only lost in the play-downs, because Jarkko was ill. The result of it was that Ketola's straight sets win over Harel Levy wasn't enough.

Neely
07-17-2005, 03:08 PM
Yes, that's a very disappointing loss overall for Finland. Only Nieminen who is a banker to win all single matches against these teams did perform.

The bulgarian players don't stand a chance against Nieminen. Both games will be 3:0 because of his class and great performance on clay. But the thing is Ketola is too poor on clay. He may have some problems with Enev and even more with Lukaev which favourite surface is clay.

I love to be right! :rocker: JMG, don't blame Ketola! He is a better player but he is big zero on clay. You were right it was very stupid Finland to choose clay. We will beat Ukrain for you.

You don't have to beat Ukraine for me. ;)

I think the reason why they choose clay can only be:

1. because Jarkko will play 3 clay tournaments now and played on clay before as well and because the others are better prepared for Tampere next week.

2. because it's summer and in the summertime you don't play indoors.

oooh :worship: so happy for the guys, its a great win!!!! the doubles were so important, I guess our guys were really inspired and gave it all to win over a team that really has a player like Nieminen but it just takes heart to do that, really well done! :worship: now we got to beat Ukraine, that will probably be on hard courts? Its not impossible if the guys unite the same way!

sorry JMG! we'll welcome Jarkko here with open hands next time :p

Next years Group II looks a bit more difficult to me:
Finland
Georgia
Norway
Poland
Greece
Hungary
Algeria
Latvia
Macedonia
Egypt
Cyprus
Ireland
loser of Israel/Zimbabwe
loser of Marocco/South Africa
loser of Bulgaria/Ukraine
loser of Portugal/Slovenia

It's probably easier to stay in Group I than to win the Group II.
