Hey all, :wavey:

I don't know if we can have this thread if not we can delete it. But I think it's a good place for us WTA Tennis fans also to discuss it. :)

Anyways today Nastya lost

Now I hope either Pierce or Davenport can win this thing.

Deboogle!.

Of course we can have the thread. How about just retitling it to be "The "Andy likes women too" WTA chat thread!" or something like that, just so people know what it's for? :) You can just edit that in by hitting edit at the bottom of your post.

Anyway, I don't love WTA that much, but I'm sorry about Myskina :(

I really want Lindsay to win Wimby!!!!!!! That's all. lol.

I think this is a good idea, Breakaway. I'm not a WTA fanatic but we all like to talk about the women players in the chat threads so now we can do it here. :)

I am hoping that Maria can repeat this year. (I need reinforcements: who was the other lone Masha fan here? lol) Or, if not, then it would be great for Lindsay to get this win. I think she can be dreadfully boring sometimes but she's nearing the end of her career and it would be the perfect way for her to bow out.

Anyway, I'm so sad Nastya lost  I'm hoping Lindsay or Maria can win this now...

LOL. I don't like listening to her interviews, either, but her voice is not why I'm a fan. I like her intensity, her desire to win titles, and more importantly, her desire to fight for every point. For a long stretch there, it seemed like none of the women knew what the word "fight" meant and wouldn't even bother running down a ball that was two feet away from them. I can't stand that. :( I want somebody who spills their guts out on the court and Maria does exactly that. She's greedy, she's mean, and she's great.

Great thread, Danny. I love women's tennis. :yeah:

I know you must be bummed about Nastya , but who really thought she would get to the Quarterfinals? She made a nice run and I'm sure it gave her some much needed confidence. :) Lindsay for Wimbledon! :p

Tangy, I love Maria's tennis. Like I said a while ago, take away her off-court personality, shrieks, and Yuri Sharapov, and I'm a fan. ;)

I actually prefer WTA tennis to ATP tennis in the sense that there a probably about 5 players I'd like to see do well each tournament (not beacuase the quality of the tennis is anywhere near as good as the mens outside the top 20 or so). On the men's side, once Andy's out, I kinda lose interest.

Lindsay v Kim yesterday was scary, The way Lindsay was hitting the ball off both flanks and serving  - it was awesome. I actually watched that match instead of Andy's.

I really hope she can go on and win this thing.

If amelie mauresmo actually turns up and plays her 'A' game tomorrow I will be stunned. I always root for her and she always disappoints by losing with a whimper. If by some fluke she gets past Lindsay, Sharapova will blast her off the court ( i haven't watched any of Venus, but if Serena's lack of fitness was anything to go by...:tape: )

It looks like same game but it's not. WTA tennis is much different. It's weird and scary. Sorta like clay court tennis and grass court tennis, on the surface it looks the same but once you start to pay more attention to it, it's a completly different game.

They didn't say she was injured because of the strapping. They said so because she stopped moving for balls which weren't directly in her hitting zone and started trying to hit winners off every ball. To be fair, I was only half-watching. It's hard to tell if that meant she was injured because, with the best will in the world, Lindsay often does look sluggish.

With both ladies in the finals, I don't mind who wins it. Would be awesome for Lindsay to win a slam, because she really deserved both Wimbledon and the Us Open last year, as well as the Australian Open this year, but found a way to fuck it up. Venus, on the other hand, has FINALLY started to look like vintage Venus, blasting forehands that stay in for winners, moving and defending insanely well, getting her serve clicking, it's really awesome to see. Would be great for her to win Wimbledon and get back inside the top 10 and maintain all this confidence she has atm.

the reason lindsay struggled against momo was because momo changed it up and plays a different style to lindsays last 2 openants....i think venus bashing the ball will suit lindsay more that the semi match...come on lindsay 3rd time lucky (they have played 2 slam finals and vee has won both..time for a lindsay win)

I agree! :yeah: I'd be happy with either win since it's been a long time coming for both of them and they both deserve it so much. (I might be just slightly biased toward rooting for Venus though. ;)). :)

I know! All her court sense is still there and it's just a matter of getting some power on her very weak groundies...and of course, match play. I've really taken a liking to her recently(-ish ;)) and I hope she makes a serious comeback too. What a breath of fresh air it would be for the tour.

plus, she started having problems with the real big hitters. It's one thing to hit return winners and passing shots past Navratilova who's 48. It'd be another to play Lindsay or Kim or Venus or Justine or whoever.

But I wish she'd do it, she just has a good attitude and it's just wrong for someone so talented and so great to be done at 22 :(

First upset of the day: Svetlana K. the defending champ is out. Not really a surprise but it still kinda sucks that a defending champ goes crashing out in first round. First time that's happened at the USO too.

I know there are many Lindsay fans here so here's an article about her in one of the the local rags (NYDailyNews). PS- I'm glad to see lots of gossip and stories about the tennis players in so many newspapers--and USO has barely started. :D

Davenport drawing crowd
No. 1 in rankings and fans' hearts

BY JOHN DELLAPINA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Lindsay Davenport will get great support from New York crowd.
She never has been one of tennis' glamour girls. But then, Lindsay Davenport never really has cared about such things.

And if that meant public adoration would be delayed in finding her — or never arrive at all — Davenport could live with that.

But now, at the tennis-ancient age of 29 and with her own mention of retirement having sparked an assessment of what she's achieved and how she's behaved, Davenport is being showered with appreciation from American tennis fans. And while she might not have sought it, Davenport doesn't mind it at all.

She enjoyed that support while returning from a month off with a back flareup to win the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven on Saturday. And she can expect it from boisterous New Yorkers over the next two weeks as she pursues her second U.S. Open title in Flushing Meadows beginning with tomorrow's first-round match against Na Li of China.

"I was asked if I felt the crowd is more on your side now and I said, 'Absolutely,'" said Davenport, the second seed here who has what appears to be a favorable draw. "I mean, I felt obviously more beloved in the States than I would anywhere else in the world. But I think it's natural.

"I think the crowd always kind of goes for the players as they get older and who they've seen experience more ups and downs throughout their careers — and who they come to know a little better."

Particularly when they aren't put off by the more they know about players.

In Davenport's case, she has remained grounded and gracious. She handled insensitive barbs about her size and plodding play early in her career with good humor and has been self-deprecating about her recent reclaiming of the No. 1 ranking.

More impressive, Davenport has managed to almost always take the high road while remaining candid and eschewing the syrupy cliché. Justin Gimelstob learned as much when she called him out for one of his recent blogs for SI.com, in which the male pro criticized what he called the dysfunctional nature of the women's tour and made pointed comments about the players' skimpy outfits and whether some had suitable bodies for them.

"I don't know if I can repeat everything I said to him," she said yesterday, smiling. "I'm just always curious what the fascination is about men and how they have to judge women constantly — what they look like, what they wear, who they hang out with.

"Men have this endless fascination with, it seems like — and Justin especially — about just depicting and picking on everything about the body. And so his column was, I thought, a waste of time."

While such comments undoubtedly will win her applause in the women's locker room and lounge this week, it was her gracious reaction to her gut-wrenching loss to Venus Williams in the 2005 Wimbledon final that won Davenport legions of newly devoted fans.

"The first few weeks after — and even now — I've had more people come up to me over that particular instance than even winning Slams in the past," she said of failing to convert a match point at 5-4 in the third set before going on to lose, 9-7, after twice requiring a trainer's help for her balky back.

Characteristically, Davenport downplayed her behavior and expressed embarrassment at the fan reaction.

"I was joking: I had so many presents and flowers and stuff sent to my house it's like, 'Oh my God, I feel like someone died or something happened,'" she said. "My husband and I would laugh about it. But I think people were really, I don't know, touched."

Davenport wasn't laughing when she mused publicly over the last couple of years about retiring. Even though she doesn't see herself playing another 10 years, she has been rejuvenated in recent months by a surge that saw her finish 2004 with the No. 1 ranking and then reach the final of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year.

"It's not even in my vision to stop now," she said. "I mean, obviously, it's going to happen sooner or later one day.

"But while I'm playing well and if you have a chance to win Grand Slams, it's obviously extremely difficult to walk away and feel like you've left anything on the table or unfinished.

"So while I'm healthy and playing well, enjoying it and feel I'm contending, I'm going to keep on playing."

And congratulations to Kim Clijsters, so happy she won US Open. :)
Maria Sharapova seems so moody on court, and with the grunting and come ons I find her annoying to watch, she was on the verge of tears in her match against Kim and she was constantly in touch with her dad during change-overs sulking like a 12-year old. Weird...

Pierce  I knew she was going to get crushed. Her 2000 form would have definitely put up more of a fight since she was quicker around the court then. Still a great year and i really hope she continues this form all the way till the YEC.:)

I knew Kimmie was going to win but I wish it would have been a 3 set match and more of a fight but oh well.. way to go Kimmie it's about time!! Victory is yours! :woohoo: :yeah:  I loved the way she climbed up that wall to greet her family that was awesome but she almost fell! :scared: that would have been good now the champion being wheeled out in a wheelchair for her trophy.....

 for Daniela against Lindsay

I wasn't often online this week-end because I was in Hasselt (WTA tournament) for the qualy.
It was nice. Even if we (I was with friends) didn't see a lot of match. Actually, the only matches we saw in entire was the 2 matches of Claudine Schaul and the 2 matches of Mandy Minella
But yeah, we were there for watching Claudine and Jarmila. And also for talking to them.
So bad that Jarmila twisted her ankle the Friday before the qualy. So she didn't play at all  But at least, we have time to speak a little with her :)

Pierce just made me lose $10 000 vcash over at wtaworld. As to who's going to win the YEC: Clijsters, Sharapova, Davenport, Pierce. If someone else other than these 4 win it, I'd be really shocked.

Great...we're in for a sucky final now either way. If Maria wins, Mary will self-destruct like she usually does and Miss Endorsarova will walk away with the title yet again.

If Amelie wins, it will be a battle of big chokers, oh help me god :retard:

Boo, Maria lost. To *&^*% Amelie, no less. :(

The women's YEC has been weird. For every match, every player I thought would win her match it was the exact opposite. Lindsay and Maria and especially Elena and Kim were just out of it all week. Tomorrow I think Mary will win. Now watch it be Amelie. Blech.

I'm not a Mary fan but I hope she does win it. She was in the finals for two slams this year and if she won the YEC title that would go a long way towards erasing her lousy finals performances.

I love Mary Pierce . Finals is ALL on her racquet, and she should come out on top. She's far and beyond the better player, and she's beaten Amelie both times she's been in form (Amelie beat her twice in the early months of this year but Pierce then and now are completely different).

I figure this is the best place to write this....

Remind me again why I paid money to see this live? ;) No actually, it was a really fun day. :) It was sad when Lindsay lost, and after that the crowd was kinda dead. She dfed a billion times and Pierce was serving unbelievably. Lindsay kinda had that defeated look the whole match and even though she came back that first set, after she lost the TB we kinda knew she wouldn't be able to pull it out.

The second match was so different was watch, as for the style of play and everything. I think seeing tennis live makes you pay much more attention to the spins and everything and thats kinda cool. We were rooting not really for Amelie to win, but for Maria to lose. ;) We almost thought Amelie was gonna choke away that second set, but she pulled it out. :D

For both matches, my friend and I were watching Yuri :sobbing: He was out there most of the Davenport match and surprisingly, not much of Maria's match
Random: Also, the Staples Center was smaller than I thought it would be.

Then we watched the first doubles semi and left after the first set of the second one. I dunno, most of you guys could probably care less about women's tennis at all, but I figured I might as well type up a little somethign before I forget it :sobbing:

superpinkone37
11-13-2005, 03:25 PM
We were on the opposite side of the chair, so at changeovers, the players are facing us. When we're sitting facing the court, our seats (top row of the lowest level of seats) were pretty much lined up with the baseline on the left side of the court.

Most of the cameras were facing away from us, though, I think.
But if you see us, we look like we're about to fall asleep

Still really happy for Amelie though, it's about friggin time we win something of note. Pierce , so gutted for her. She's had a kick ass year she should have won a slam and/or the YEC but failed on all 3 of her chances. There's always next year though :rocker:, she's clearly the #3 player in the world imo.
