Coria vs. Nalbandian

Who do you think will be the winner?

The press and the people here are talking too much about this match. They say itīs very speciall for both of them, more than a final. A kind of "Classic".
The reason is that they both made her juniors career together, playing doubles and playing singles in the same tournaments. They have face each other in a Rolland Garros juniors final.
But when they become pro, Guillermo didnīt rise so soon like David and his career was stopped for a lesion and for the "dopping trouble"
But now Coria is perhaps in her best moment, he is playing better, he is not trowing the racquet to the floor, and getting excellents results.
But if he is in her best moment ŋwhat about David? He is a top ten and he is playing like that, like one of the best players of the world. Very confidente, very strong, he doesnīt give a chance to her rivals.
Coria has played 6 sets (3 vs Acasuso and 3 vs Zabaleta), David only 4 but he played a 2 hourd doubles match with Lucas Arnold to defeat Kuerten/Sa in doubles late last night.

Head to Head
The have meet one time:
Lima 2000 (Clay) Coria won 6-2 6-7 6-1
Very tight and a long time ago. Same surface, but they were still entering into the pros

Note: David was born in 1/1/1982 and the "mago" Coria 13/1/1982, only 12 days between them.

I picked David. LIke I said in his thread, I think that he's really hungry now and he'll find a way ;)

I might add, that my opinion on the matter is totally objective of course, as I don't have a personal preference towards either player.

Really. ;)

I want Coria to win...mainly becos I want another Argentinian in the top 50....and I think he'll make it this year...

Coria is top 50 - I think you mean top 20 ;)

Chloe le Bopper
02-20-2003, 10:56 AM
If Coria can break the top 20 in the first half of the year, then one fifth of the top 25 will be argentines... and if Gaudio keeps it up, they would make up 1/4 of the top 20 ;)

Coria's best ranking to date I believe is 25th. But yes, he certaintly has the game to be top 20. If he stays healthy he should be there by the years end.

well...he's only 20-21....shouldn't be anything wrong with him... he had blisters in AO....but when u play Agassi ofcoure ur gonna have blisters....it's all dat running around...

They both turned 21 in January. Babies :D

Yeah....so they've got age on their side...
I predict in the next 2 yrs... you'll find that Argentinians will dominate the top 20....

Guys like Nalbandian, Canas, Gaudio, Chela, Coria, Acasuso will probabaly stay at the top for awhile...they're all pretty young...

It's pretty hard to decide for one of them to win the match. I think David is not yet in a great level, but I don't know yet what's the level either of Coria, but I know he could beat David.

I like both of them!

Catriel

I have seen them both playing live this week:

Last monday David won easy over Vicente but he wasnīt playing "excellent". On monday night too, I saw Coria winning in 3 sets over Acasuso. I donīt like "chucho" but I recognize he is a great player, he is more than Vicente (Davidīs rival last monday) and he won the second set.
So I can say David is playing in a level 75 % and Coria 90 % Iīm sure we still havnīt seen the best that Willy Coria can give us.
If you ask me, I think the winner will be David Nalbandian, specially because the people will cheer for him.

About argentinians close to the top 20, donīt forget that Mariano Zabaleta is rising again, take care about him.
And I pray for a resurrection of Franco Squillari, I like him since years ago (well, he has my age, he is getting old  like me)

We are very proud of our players and very proud for having our own ATP tourney again. Clarisa, Paola, Maria Emilia and Gisela are waiting for a WTA event here, but the people doesnīt support them like they support the boys.

Hopefully Argentina will be able to hold on to their tournament. It would be awful if they didn't get to see all their great players at home

If you ask me, I think the winner will be David Nalbandian, specially because the people will cheer for him.

I meant to ask; who is the crowd fave out of the Argies? I can see David over Coria, because of his Wimbledon success. But what about Canas, when he plays? Or Gaudio, because of his Davis Cup success?

Awesome4hand
02-21-2003, 11:36 AM
I pick Coria ...mainly becos he's in my fantasy team... and he cost alot less than Nalbandian...a bargain...

Awesome4hand
02-21-2003, 11:39 AM
I like tha Argentinian players becos they are consistent... they play hard and they play fair.... the matches I've seen...

Coria v Canas... they both got pretty crappy calls from umpire... but they went on with it....

Plus... Maradonna is GOD.... he's my HERO (despite the drugs)... he's not afraid to speak his mind...

Sjengster
02-21-2003, 12:41 PM
Well I think I'll support Coria on this one, even if Nalbandian is favourite - at least Nalbandian didn't have the wrong first name put down on the poll.

Gaston! I didn't even notice that... Let's just say that my observation skills aren't very sharply trained...

Catriel really has no excuse for messing that up ;)

Aaargh! Come on, Coria! (Becca, I feel guilty that I've supported the other player twice now, this match and Ferrero v Sluiter. But you can't change your personal tastes, can you?)

Stay with it, Coria - I may prefer another Guillermo C. over you, but I feel like a lower-ranked Argie winning his home tournament!

David pull the win!!!!

Surely I'll hold this against you untill the end of all time. I had the heart to cheer for Schalken to day, and this is what I get in return? The pain, the horror!

My scoreboard is on drugs. For one thing, it had Coria serving twice in a row, and it's now stuck at 5 all.

Sjengster
02-21-2003, 08:00 PM
Yes, I'm still eternally grateful for the Schalken support, although ironically Federer was the one opponent I didn't mind him losing to. Oh, and of course Henman supersedes them all - I think that's partly down to national obligation, and partly a genuine liking for his game.

lokon
02-21-2003, 08:04 PM
Oh no Coria won :(

Chloe le Bopper
02-21-2003, 08:05 PM
If Federer had been in one of his inconsistent funks (actually, hasn't his entire career been an inconsistent funk spotted with brilliance?) I would have rooted for him. But seeing as he was on a 9 match winning streak or whatever it is now, I decided that it was time for him to cool off. Apparently he didn't agree.

Chloe le Bopper
02-21-2003, 08:07 PM
Gah! Why did Coria have to win? He should be retired by now! Blasphemy!

I retire as a tennis fan. These loses are making me so distraught that my ability to function in regular life has been negatively effected. Why I won't be able to eat for days now *sigh*

But seriously, did it matter who won this match? Guga's going to win the tournament anyhow (another one who has to retire! hasn't he won enough?!)

Sjengster
02-21-2003, 08:09 PM
So, Coria won too did he? Well... what an excellent day of results!

I canīt believe my mistake
I was thinking in another person perhaps (obviously Gaston Gaudio)
I canīt believe that!:o

Sorry!!!

Congratulations "Mago" Coria, I cheered for him against Acasuso. I think he can win, he is in an excellent moment, since Australia.
But... Guga, Moyá, Gaudio (he won 2 straight titles on clay last year) what a tournament!! Exellent matchs for semis!

Itīs amazing to think that this tourney was going to be cancelled last december

Chloe le Bopper
02-22-2003, 08:31 PM
Well Coria, I forgive you. He took out my two favourites in this tournament, but at least he didn't embarass either of them. The way things are going, he's look at Moya in the finals, but I'm not ready to count Guga out.

I was hoping that he would play Kuerten though, based on how great their last two matches looked:

2002-09-09 Bahia Hardcourt F Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 6-7(4) 7-5 7-6(2)
2003-01-06 Auckland Hardcourt QF Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 7-5 4-6 6-2
