Nalbandian will go into semis with Roddick!

This was my prediction before the tournament started. I think people a bit forgot on him and how dangerous he is. I don't think he will have a great year, but I think he will do very well on Wimbledon and remind everyone on his presence. He could meet Stepanek, Gasquet and than Thomas Johanson on his way to semi-finals, and all those could be very good matches...

Nalbandian is most probably the biggest under-achiever of the entire tennis world.

I see him at the same level of the game as Hewitt; if not currently superior.
He should have atleast a dozen ATP tour titles, including one or two grand slams.

The fact that he's made $3,814,329 in a total of 3 title wins of his career, is amazing.
And also tells us how many times he's made it deep into a tournament, without winnning it.

I'm not underestimating Thomas - I will be nervous out there on Court 1 tomorrow - but then I am always nervous when David plays :)

I dont really agree with the term one slam wonder (but if there is a guy who fits this) it has to be thomas :tape:

I think Thomas will be very dangerous tomorrow, but it's up to David. I hope he gets to the court as focused as he was against Gasquet...

yes just look at his draw:

Diaz, Jacobo (ESP ) 69 6-1 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4
R64 Hipfl, Markus (AUT ) 83 6-4 6-1 6-4
R32 El Aynaoui, Younes (MAR ) 1 5-7 6-2 6-2 6-4
R16 Voinea, Adrian (ROM ) 0 6-7(10) 6-2 6-0 6-4
Q Bjorkman, Jonas (SWE ) 23 6-0 2-6 6-3 6-4
S Novak, Jiri (CZE ) 8 7-6(5) 6 4-6 6-3 6-4
W Safin, Marat (RUS ) 54 3-6 6-4 6-4 7-6(4)

very weak draw but props to him, he took advantage of it.

lol i know its really a terrible draw, apart from safin not really a "class" opponent, i am curious to know how such a weak draw happened (did all the players get taken out early, or were there alot of injuries and withdrawals?)

Still tougher than most of Agassi's RG draws.

All the top players lost early during that Aussie Open.
I remember that Henman was the highest seed left in the tournament by R4 that year.
I still remember that loss to Bjorkman in R4 that year, that was a real heartbreaker!
Johansson will be tough, but Nalbo's got that real hunger back!
Vamos Nalbo, you can do it. :yeah:

It was harder to find a wackier tournament than that 2002 AO, so many top players losing early and I think a record number of matches being won from two sets down, it certainly showed who had done the work in the off-season. It helped Johansson that the draw was ridiculously top-heavy: the top half had Hewitt, Agassi (before he pulled out), Safin, Federer, Haas, Sampras, Rios... The bottom half only had Grosjean, Kafelnikov and Henman, and the first two were upset in the second round having done very well there the year before. You have to give Johansson credit for taking advantage of his draw, other players such as Henman didn't. He was very close to losing to Novak in the SF, but a rain delay saved him I think.

I'd like to see that semi too

but I fear that if Nalbandian does get through, he'll be damaged goods after surviving Tojo :) Thats if the latter plays as well as he's been playing so far
