Very good performance from a very calm Safin. Paradorn played awfully though with zero confidence in about 90% of the games. His grounstrokes were extraordinarily weak, his serves were pretty weak and not well placed, his volleys were alright. I don't know how many times Paradorn put the ball right in front of Safin to smack. It's sad to see Paradorn lose all confidence like this. Good win for Safin though. He hit the ball very cleanly.

I wouldn't say destroyed. Srichaphan played as well as I've seen him play this year. The scoreline doesn't really tell the whole story. However Marat was playing some scintillating tennis in the first set. Some of his shots and volleys. At one point John (McEnroe) said something like all he has to do is get the racket to the ball and it's a winner. I wonder if Marat truly believes now he can win it, with all the news about his ligament rupture and needing surgery. Maybe getting to Halle and pushing Roger all the way has convinced him finally.

You know after seeing his tight match against rog in halle (i knew if he can put his mind to playing on the surface he could do well). I also felt he had a chance at wimbledon, and a chance of beating roger (if he can make it that far). The first set he played amazing tennis, serving well, and most of all (superb play at the net). Looking at the way he played in that set and from his previous performances (i dont think he has a real weakness apart from his mind). He will be a difficult player to beat for anyone if he has his mind on gear because he has the groundstrokes, the serve and the volleys :D He does seem to have some nice touch sometimes around the net, playing good drop volleys as well as knocking off a volley for a winner too.

I am really looking forward to seeing how he does this tournament though!

Marat's stats:... :)

1st Serve % 55 of 79 = 70 %

Aces 10

Double Faults 0

Unforced Errors 13

Winning % on 1st Serve 44 of 55 = 80 %

Winning % on 2nd Serve 15 of 24 = 63 %

Winners (Including Service) 46

Receiving Points Won 45 of 97 = 46 %

Break Point Conversions 5 of 12 = 42 %

Net Approaches 20 of 27 = 74 %

Total Points Won 104

Fastest Serve 136 MPH

Average 1st Serve Speed 125 MPH

Average 2nd Serve Speed 104 MPH

http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/scores/stats/day1/1032ms.html

As I said in another thread, Marat had 17 winners to 1 UE by the mid-point of the second set and then his level dropped and he was still 29 winners to 12 UEs for the rest of the match.

His first serves in were something like 80% by the end of the second set and they were averaging 125 mph as you can see.

LOL JustmeUK. Paradorn has played awfully this year and he played poorly today other than a few games during the match. The stats don't show it of course (for some fans who could not see the match) because this is grass and there weren't that many opporunities for Safin to make erros when Paradorn was hitting extremely tentative shots that Safin smacked around. It didn't really matter because Marat playing well like he was would've been too much for Paradorn on any day.

lol, Paradorn just did the splits....even the lineswoman behind him had a look of pain on her face when he did it :)

But I'm also sad for Paradorn... he deserves better, but he fares so badly since long time already

Marat was awesome!
If he's fully focused mentally, he'll definitely go very far.
It was a real shame to see Paradorn in the state he's in. He was playing some silly low percentage shots and at times looked like he wasn't taking the match seriously enough.

Paradorn was okay-ish but for a good part of the match Marat just didn't miss a shot and we know that when Marat is at his best he can beat anyone. I think Paradorn was trying a couple of wacky shots out of frustration as I don't think he swears and throws stuff to let it out otherwise.

Pdorn didn't play that bad, considering he had more winners than errors, unlike in most of his other losses. It was just all Safin; his winner to error ratio was unfair.

I don't know about that. He was playing bad no question about that. All Marat had to do was to keep the ball in play and wait for Paradorn's UE. Marat didn't have to play out of his skin ( since grass is supposed to be his worst surface) at all to win this match.

Hopefully, Paradorn will come out of his bad run this year.

No offence but Marat's matchup with Mark will probably be more interesting.

Marat played very well today. I'm impressed; he looked very comfortable and smooth out there. If he continues to play like this, he's on his way to the 2nd week of Wimbledon. He has a very tough match against Mark next however.

It wasn't about Paradorn's UEs as he made 14 to Marat's 13. It was all about Marat's winners as he made 46 and Paradorn's 20.
