Mirnyi Powers Past Novak

Saturday, June 25, 2005

Powerful-serving Max Mirnyi of Belarus beat Jiri Novak, the No. 28 from the Czech Republic, in four sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

Ranked just 10 places higher than his opponent, Novak might have wished for an easier third round opponent than Mirnyi. The powerful Belarussian had yet to drop a set, or even a single service game, in this year's tournament. For his part, Mirnyi had disposed of Rainer Schuettler, who reached No.5 in the world in 2004 and Oliver Rochus, the No.33 seed - against whom he served 33 aces - in his earlier matches.

By contrast, Novak had dropped a set and endured two tie-breaks against unseeded opponents.

Novak found himself immediately 0-3 down in the first set, as Mirnyi twice served to love and broke the Czech. However, something of a small turnaround occurred around the fourth and fifth game. The experienced Czech served to love and, more importantly, broke Mirnyi's serve. Despite serving a handful of aces, Mirnyi had uncharacteristic problems with his first serve. This, combined with increasingly confident play by the Czech, combining drop shots and lobs to unsettle his 6ft 5'in opponent, meant trouble for Mirnyi.

Novak, also attracting applause with accurate line-splitters, broke Mirnyi's serve to love to take a decisive lead 6-5 in the first set. Mirnyi, now struggling even with basic forehand shots, had no way to contest the Czech's serve and a Mirnyi forehand shooting high up in the air meant he was one set up.

The second set started no differently. The first ball of the set was a straight winner against Mirnyi's first serve. 2-0 up in the set and hitting with power and accuracy it looked good for the Czech, who has never gone beyond the third round of The Championships in his previous nine attempts. But this match was far from over.

Mirnyi broke Novak, who started making more unforced errors, to 2-2, after holding his serve convincingly. Shortly after, Mirnyi hit three aces in a row to take him 4-3 up. At 6-5 up, the Belarussian broke Novak thanks to four unforced errors by the Czech, to take the second set.

The third set was less eventful, until Novak was broken when serving at 4-5. The experienced Czech seemed to be tiring.

Serving at 4-5 in the fourth set, Novak made no mistakes. A lob over Mirnyi and an ace, with second serve, capped the game to him. Mirnyi held his next game to love, forcing Novak to serve to take the set to a tie-break. He managed that feat, defending two match points. But Mirnyi ran away with the subsequent tie-break, closing proceedings with an ace.
