This draw seems awfully weird IMHO. Just look at how many all Spanish match ups there are!

Possible 3rd round match up: Gasquet vs Nadal (two GS straight now!)

Tim has it easy until Arthurs in 3rd round and Fed is in the other half so it's still possible he could make it to the final.

More than likely 2nd round match up: Hewitt vs Blake - ought to be good considering their past matches and the fact James is hungry to get wins and improve his ranking.

Of the top 10 seeds, looks like Ancic has the most open section and Marat seems unlikely to reach 3rd round (I really hope I'm wrong about that). Of the higher seeds, Dent seems to have the easiest passage to the 4th round providing he's fit enough.

Roddick and Safin have the two toughest draws. Nadal could get Gasquet 3rd round and Roddick could face Karlovic 2nd round, Soderling 3rd round, and Ljubicic 4rd round before meeting Henman in the semis.

Federer has to love his draw. He won't face one big server until the QF and thats if Johansson can make it that far. He has been injured all year. His toughest test will be Kiefer in the 3rd round.

Safin also has a very tough draw with Flip in the 2nd round, Ancic in the 4th round, and Hewitt in the QF.

Nadal has a tough 1st round with Spadea, 2nd round with Muller (big server), 3rd round with Gasquet, and Nalbandian 4th round.

Hewitt vs Dent 3rd round could be a great match if Dent shows up.

* Aside from Nadal, I don't see the top 5 getting upset in round one.

* Glad Pim gets a clay courter in round one. Hopefully he can get a win under his belt, as he should, and build momentum through the rest of the draw.

* Karlovic is schedule to play Roddick in round 2 if I'm correct. Just when you thought Roddick was safe from Federer until the finals, he's faced with the 6'10" beast from Croatia. Very intriguing round 2 matchup.

Allmost all the seeds have a very good draw, appart from Roddick.

Safin could also have some work with grass-specialists Philippoussis in second and Srichaphan in first round. Ancic seems on his way to 1/8 finals where he will play Safin or Lopez. Hewitt I already see in 1/4 finals waiting for possibly an encounter with Ancic.

Nadal could meet Gasquet in th 3rd round again, this time on grass... but they both (and expecially Nadal) could loose earlier. Thomas Johanson has a good path to 1-4 finals, and maby even to 1/2 finals with Roddick. I wonder if Nalbandian can go there instead, or maby even Gasquet... But Stepanek is perfectly capable of going to semis also.

Mallise will be dangerous in the lower part of the draw, so many seeds will be happy to see him far away... Similar story for Soderling. Roddick definitely has tough draw this time.

Henman and Grosjean are on the way for the 1/8 finals too...

Malisse is very weak mentally with 0-8 record against Roodick and Soderling has 7 first round exits and 2 second round exits this year.

Wimbledon men's seed report
Roddick primed for a deep run, where Roger awaits

Posted: Thursday June 16, 2005 12:31PM

Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim offers his insight as to how the men's and women's seeds will fare at Wimbledon. Read on for the top first-round matchups, dark horses to keep an eye on and his predicted winners.

Top 16 seeds

1. Roger Federer. Even if he didn't have a chip on his shoulder after Paris, the two-time defending champ has to be considered the overwhelming favorite. Most underrated statistic in sports: Federer has won the last 20 finals in which he's played.

2. Andy Roddick. He could upgrade his unremarkable year with a (sorely needed) strong performance on grass. He's looked sharp in tune-ups and -- despite his choppy net play -- this might be the ideal surface for his lock-and-load game and underrated athleticism. He can't be happy about an early matchup against Ivo Karlovic, but he still has a good shot at another final.

3. Lleyton Hewitt. Pops Hewitt probably got a raw deal from the seeding committee, but they made it up to him with a generally congenial draw. A possible second-rounder against James Blake is intriguing, as always.

4. Rafael Nadal. The inevitable letdown after the clay-court tear won't be as dramatic as many think. Nadal still is a long way from feeling comfortable on grass, but the guess here is that he wins three matches.

5. Marat Safin. As he has made abundantly clear, grass is not his preferred surface. Plus he's playing on an iffy knee, and he got no help from a draw that pits him first against Paradorn Srichaphan and then against the Mark Philippoussis-Karol Beck winner. Of course, given his history of inexplicable results, this all could mean that Safin will go on to win the tournament.

6. Tim Henman. One of those players who quietly could sneak through the draw without garnering much attention. As always, the Brit native will not only have to compete with the likes of Sebastien Grosjean and Roddick in his quadrant, but also with national hysteria.

7. Guillermo "Willie" Canas. Tennis' Ben Wallace -- perhaps the game's best defensive player --is not a threat on the greensward.

8. Nikolay Davydenko. Interesting prospect: Though his track record on grass is unremarkable, his efficient, minimalist game would seem to fit the surface.

9. Sebastien Grosjean. A semifinalist two years running, he got a huge bump from the subjective seeding (he's ranked No. 26). Potential tough first-rounder against left-handed countryman Mike Llodra.

10. Mario Ancic. Inasmuch as a former semifinalist and No. 10 seed can be a dark horse, Ancic is your man. Baby Goran (or Baby Pau Gasol, as the case may be) has a big serve and wham-bam game ideal for grass. If the serve is working, the semifinals are a real possibility.

11. Joachim Johansson. In theory, the hard-serving Swede is real contender. But questions about his health linger. He's in Federer's quadrant and, should the two play on Johansson's birthday, we know the recent history.

12. Thomas Johansson. It's surprising this deceptively powerful Swede doesn't have a stronger track record at Wimbledon. He's playing in a wide-open quadrant, so look for a strong showing from 2002 Aussie Open champ.

13. Tommy Robredo. Grass doesn't afford him the time he requires to hit his big forehand. He can't complain about his draw, but don't be surprised if he goes down early --say to Florian Mayer in Round 2.

14. Radek Stepanek. A powerful player with nice hands around the net. One to watch for sure.

15. Guillermo Coria. He'll be lucky to win against Tom Behrend. But unlike other clay-court impresarios Carlos Moya, Gaston Gaudio, Albert Costa and Juan Ignacio Chela, credit him for showing up.

16. Mariano Puerta. He's never won a grass-court match. Enough said.

Seeds 17-32
18. David Nalbandian. El Mullet has been sluggish all year, but he was a Wimbledon finalist in '02.

20. Ivan Ljubicic. He cooled off after torrid start to '05, but he's a player to watch now that there's a fast court underfoot.

22. Taylor Dent. This his best chance for a deep Slam run.

28. Jiri Novak. He's past his prime, but he sure has a sweet draw.

Dark-horse nation

Ivo Karlovic. If he can serve Roddick off the court in Round 2, look out.

Max Mirnyi. Generally a horrible Grand Slam singles player. But on the serve alone, he ought to win a few rounds.

Alexander Popp. A wise man once said, "Never pick against an onomatopoeia."

Karol Beck/Mark Philippoussis. The winner of this first-round matchup could go far.

Paradorn Srichaphan. In the throes of a miserable year but usually plays well on grass.

Phil Kohlscreiber. Yet another German with grass-court aptitude.

Olivier Rochus. As always.

First-round matchups to watch

Beck vs. Philippoussis. Lousy draw for both.

Safin vs. Srichaphan. At another time, on another surface, this could have been a final.

Vince Spadea vs. Nadal. Eccentric American could give French Open champ a workout.

Nicolas Massu vs. Sarge Sargsian. Best '04 U.S. Open match redux.

Henman vs. Jarko Nieminen. "Their Tim" can't be happy about facing a lefty veteran off the bat.

LOL! I think Federer's draw is pretty easy for once, but I think it is hard to give him a hard draw on grass unless you really stack it up against him i.e. 1st round: Ivo, 2nd round: Rusedski, 3rd round: Gasquet (who has been playing REALLY well on grass and flying under the radar), etc.

I think Roddick has it pretty easy except for Ivo and that is the "big" thing. Someone had to get stuck with Ivo and it wound up to be Roddick. I expect Roddick to win that one 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 just like I expected him to win at Queen's 7-6, 7-6.

I would include Johansson and Karlovic in the hard draw in your first paragraph.

No question though, Karlovic isn't as well-round in his gameplay as Roddick.

So an advantage there for the American.

Big bad tiebreaker in 4 sets minimum as Ivo will steamroll the unknown qualifier.

federer has to win this one, otherwise, the media will be cruel to him...

:haha: @ all these people bitching about Lleyton's bad draw.
You have a player who can GET PAST THE FIRST ROUND. A player who might actually beat Roger one day. Here's hoping that day never comes... and that the fans get over this drama

i don't think nadal will make it into the 2nd week even if he had an easy draw. remember waske? :p

he only had 1 match on grass as preparation...

Debunking Nadal's loss to Waske: Sunday (3 days before match) he wins RG, has a party, and then stays up all night dancing at a disco. Monday he had media and photo obligations all day in Paris. Monday night he arrives in Germany. Tuesday he practices on grass for the first time in 2 years. Even though he is tired as hell and ill-prepared to play Halle, he still goes out on court. He gives it his best shot - even wins the 1st set - before losing to Waske, who is both a veteran grass courter and a hometown fave.

Past years results on grass for Nadal:
2002 - Reaches SFs in Wimby junior
2003 - Reaches 3rd round of Wimby senior at age of 17, equaling Becker's record, including a win over Ancic, the last player to defeat Federer on grass (2002)

Not bad methinks, considering there are no grass courts in Spain. Does he have a chance of winning the title? Probably not this year, but I think he could meet Gasquet in the 3rd round and possibly beat him...

According to an israeli newspaper, because of Canas's withdrawal, Noam Okun will play Monfils (Oli Rochus was supposed to )

They must have finished putting the quallies/lucky losers in the draw then.

Hmmm, giving it a second thought it's not so great. Okay, he's seeded now, but he'll play a qualifier in the first round who's probably in good form and good on grass, and then probably Mirnyi who's giving him all sorts of trouble right now...

Otherwise he'd have had to play against an inexperienced and not-in-very-good-form Monfils, followed by Hrbaty, who isn't a grasscourt-specialist either.

Ah well, who knows :) Good luck Oli! :yeah:
