I thought to start a new thread for it as Fernando is playing this exhibition this week.

He'll play Davydenko tomorrow.....I don’t know at which time yet but will post the OOP as soon as I can find it.

He'll get to play 3 guaranteed matches there against N. Davydenko, D. Nalbandian and J. Johansson.

Buena suerte Feña!!! :)

The match starts at 2.15pm English time. Feña is first on - then there is an exhibition (don't know who yet - possibly Roddick I think), followed by Greg Rusedski.

I'll give you a report tomorrow night when I get home.

No - you're right - their website is not clear - think we've got to remember they are only a tennis club not a tournament site, and they're not used to coping with fans from all over the world being interested in what is happening there!

I found out the OOP last night buy phoning them up - but if you go to their main website http://www.thechampionschallenge.com/flash/index.htm and click on the "Information" link you will find it there. It is under a headline about Rusedski starting his WImbledon campaign!!!

Hi guys - sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I am only just back from Stoke Park. Originally I was going to come straight home after Feña's match, (I'm not too keen on watching Rusedski who was next on court), but my friend is playing in the Jazz Band there and he persuaded me to stay for a few drinks so I've only just got home.

Anyway - I think everyone here should be proud of Fernando - he really did play well. Have to admit the start of the match was pretty shaky - he lost his opening service game, and although he managed to get the break of serve back, he then lost the tie-break  His forehand was not working at all - it was really erratic, and his serve wasn't so good either. The only good shot was the backhand that remained brilliant throughout the match.

However - things improved rapidly in the 2nd set - he began to adjust to the pace and bounce of the grass court, and from then on he began to take command and played really well - much better than the 6-4 scoreline suggests.

The 3rd set could have been anyone's match to be honest - they both played well as Davydenko began to settle down again. There were a lot of long rallies (not typical grass court tennis at all), and both were serving well too. In the end, I think Feña won because he took his chances more than his opponent who was visibly beginning to tire half way thought the 3rd set. It was a good match though and played in good spirit - the crowd was packed and all seemed to enjoy it and both players did too.

So all in all, I think all Gonzalez fans should be proud of him today - he kept his head and stayed positive, even after losing such a close 1st set, and he stayed pretty focused throughout. I'm not going to lie and say he was 100% brilliant or anything - the adjustment from clay to grass is always hard and of course there were problems and mistakes - but he won and he played well and he can build from here.

I took some photos but I don't have a digital camera (only an old fashioned one), so you will have to wait for me to finish the film and get it developed before I can scan them and post them here. For those that are interested though, he was wearing navy shorts and a white shirt with navy sleeves, and a white baseball cap.

Bye for now.

Thanks for that Rosie! So proud of him, sounds like he fought back. Like that he stayed positive and focused.

Fashion reports are always appreciated - yeay no gold shirt!!! lol! I would think that Fena would look nice in navy too (ditto Nico).

Hi Rosie, thank you so much for the great report

I have been looking for hours to find the result and was so happy that he won and now I'm even happier and very proud of him of course. :worship:

It's so lovely that you took the time to come here telling us all about his match. Thank you so much for this - it's much appreciated. :worship:

And he was wearing a white shirt for a change? How nice as some of us have become a little sick of the yellow LOL!

It sounds like you had a nice day and you are surely looking forward to David's match tomorrow. Have fun! :)

Well done, Fena!!! Woo hoo!!

LOL - well it's not hot and sunny here today - cold, windy and pouring with rain in fact! The thing about the weather here in England is that it is notoriously changeable at this time of year - I understand it will be about 27 degrees tomorrow. We kind of get used to it - freezing one day, boiling hot the next, rain at anytime!! Our best weather is actully in about October when it can be dry for weeks on end though it is also very cold by then so outdoor tennis would not be possible!!! Anyway - thanks everyone for your kind words about my report. I am going there later, but the weather is so bad the chances of David's match happening is minimal, and I doubt Feña or anyone else will be practising, - but I'll keep my eye on things. Lucikly I live so close that if the weather is really poor I can go home and just keep in touch with the Club by phone to see if there is any chance of play starting! I don't have to hang around in the Bars all day eating chocolate and drinking Pimms -though - on second thoughts....................

Will do my best to report like last time but tomorrow will be more difficult because David plays afterwards so I will have to go to his practice. He played a great match today - lost to Pim-Pim but 14-16 in a final set tie-break - can't get much closer than that - I was very proud of him :)

OK guys - well first I have to admit I only saw the first set of this match. David was playing next, so I had to go and watch him practice, grab a drink, go to the bathroom - you know the sort of thing - so sorry about that! But anyway - I am pleased to report that Feña was excellent in what I saw today - no problems. His serve was working well - and all his groundstrokes too. He may have some problems playing a grass court specialist at Wimby, because he seemed to be quite hesitant on his shots whenever Davydenko tried to come into the net, - but there aren't too many of them about. He seemed realxed and very happy too :) And for the fashionistas amongst you - it was back to the yellow shirt today I'm afraid - with black shorts.

Feña will play the winner of today's match between Greg Rusedski and Thomas Enqvist. Here is a small piece for the web-site today:-

IN THE FIRST MATCH OF THE DAY FERNANDO GONZALEZ CONTINUED HIS GOOD FORM THIS WEEK, WITH ANOTHER CONVINCING WIN OVER NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO. DAVYDENKO REPLACED JOACHIM JOHANSSON WHO UNFORTUNATELY HAD TO PULL OUT WITH A VIRAL INFECTION. GONZALEZ HAS WON ALL OF HIS MATCHES THIS WEEK AT STOKE PARK CLUB, AND WAS UPBEAT ABOUT HIS WIMBLEDON CHANCES:

‘I LOST TO KARLOVIC LAST WEEK, BUT HERE EVERYDAY I HAVE GOT BETTER, AND I HOPE FOR A GOOD COUPLE OF WEEKS AT WIMBLEDON’

RESULTS THURSDAY 16 JUNE 2005
FERNANDO GONZALEZ (CHI) BT NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO (RUS) 6-3, 6-2

As for the website - as I've said before, Stoke Park is a tennis club not a tournament venue - they simply can't deal with the volume of worldwide interest a tournament like this generates - they do their best, but they don't have the staff or the resources to update regularly or have a live scoreboard like the ATP tournaments do.

He played well, he looked good - he wore yellow! I watched his practice session before the match and he was laughing and joking around and seemed very relaxed. If I am honest it wasn't the greatest match to watch (too much heavy serving for my liking), - but Fernando won it and that is all that matters.

I'm sorry I didn't see all the match - it was very hot and I can't stand the heat so I had to go out and sit in the shade for a while - either that or I would have been taken away by the Paramedics like all the other people there suffering from heat stroke - us poor English don't "do" heat so well! But I saw the 1st set and the end of the 2nd including the presentations - Fernando gave a nice speech and got a great ovation. I spoke to him briefly afterwards (and also to Horacio de la Peña) who was very happy too.

Talk to you all later - now I need a cold shower - it was soooooo hot!!
