French TV journalists go to wrong German city
Fri Jun 10, 2005 5:09 PM BST

HALLE, Germany (Reuters) - A team of French television journalists had a shock when they arrived in the German city of Halle this week to cover the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament -- they had got the wrong Halle.

Instead of travelling to the much smaller western German town of Halle in North Rhine-Westphalia, the France 2 team turned up in Halle in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, some 350-km away.

French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain, who the journalists were looking to follow, had already been knocked out of the tournament by the time they made it to the right place.

Tournament spokesman Frank Hofen said it was not the first time such a mix-up had occurred in the 13-year history of the Halle event. Even players had made the same mistake.

"It's happened several times over the years," he said. "Once some colleagues from Poland drove to Halle in eastern Germany, searched around for the stadium but obviously they couldn't find anything there."

LOL!!! :)

Yes, I've heard of this too. Today during Tommy's match, the commentator mentioned this story that a French TV team who was supposed to do a report about Nadal came to the wrong "Halle" in Germany. And when they arrived at the right location, Nadal was already away because he lost first round.

Of course it must have been twice as painful for this media team that they first went to the wrong Halle because Halle/Saale is in East Germany and much more further way for them coming from France and it was misleading because Halle/Saale is actually the much bigger city of the two (250000 inhabitants). Halle/Westfalen only has about 20000 inhabitants, but still hosts this great tournament :)

Probably the Germans know their way around France a bit better.

It's not Halle and Halle. The cities are offically called Halle/Westfalen and Halle/Saale. No excuse for such stupidity.

It seems completely stupid when you read the article, but it is very confusing indeed.
I could have made the same error. I've been living in Germany for years now and I didn't know there was another city called Halle in West Germay, I just knew Halle in East Germany. It sounds worse than it is.

Even after all that media hooplah surrounding Nadal in Paris just last week, the French people can't get enough of him obviously.

it's almsot like confusing New Orleans and New York for instance. As I said the cities have clearly different addings. Halle/Westfalen and Halle/Saale are the officially known names. It's definitly a very unneccessary mistake. Could have been avoided if the people cared about the actual names of the cities.

New Orleans and New York? LOL... not really, indeed not by far!

A better and very close example would be confusing the two Miami cities in USA.

I'm wondering what the boss of these journalists said after they returned with undone work because of not looking closely enough at the suffix of the city :tape: :tape: :rolls:
