For set 4:

Nadal 6 Forehand winners, 17 Forehand errors, 5 Backhand winners, 8 backhand errors, 1 overhead smash, 3 dropshot winners, 1 dropshot error, 2 aces, 1 double fault

7/17 Breaks of serve/break opportunities for the match.

Puerta: 12 Forehand winners, 17 forehand errors, 5 backhand winners, 13 backhand errors, 1 dropshot error, 1 ace, 1 double fault

2/13 Breaks of serve/break opportunities for the match.

Two things that stand out: Puerta blowing 0-40 to possibly go 5-4 and serve for the match.

Then 3 set points wasted at 5-4.

Mariano was just giving it everything you could hope for in a slam final, especially in the 4th set, even though he had alot more time on court for the tourney, playing more aggressive shots, resulting in more errors.

Nadal's speed is incredible.

Tremendous effort from Nadal, your 2005 Roland Garros Champion. 1st grand slam title, in what is surely more to come, definitely at RG.

1st lefty to win RG since Muster in 95.

Well, you are an idiot. He did go to Mariano immediately after the match and he gave him a half hug and seemed to be apologising to Mariano as he did to Roger.

Alright, I didn't see that. And Spanish is my first language, btw. Still, he doesn't know how to behave. Too bad because I know he is great player.

I'm glad you speak spanish because you now can listen to Rafael's speech and hear how gracious he was.

When you say that Nadal doesn't know how to behave, it rings hollow because you don't even know how he behaves. You didn't see him warmly greet Mariano afer the match and you didn't hear his words to Mariano in his speech. Yet you insult him saying he doesn't behave properly. Perhaps it is you who doesn't watch and listen.

If you don't like Nadal's celebrations, too bad. I hope you see him celebrating much more.

I see him as genuine and unaffected. No phony waving to the crowd but unallowed relief, joy, and emotion. He was exceedingly respectful to go to the Spanish king first even before greeting his family. I don't know what more you could ask from the kid.

Plus he is a good sportsman. He is fair about the lines and he is gracious to his opponents.

Now he says Mariano played so well there were times he thought he would lose.

Congratulations to Rafi, he deserved this in a big way. At only 19 years of age showing the kind of resolve and steadiness to win such huge titles the way he did capping it with an RG crown is simply staggering. While I am not a fan of his nor do I like his style of tennis very much I can only watch in awe and tip my hat off. I always say that results speak for themselves and this one certainly does. Interest for tennis has increased a lot in last years and now with the kidīs help I have no doubts about taking that 2nd spot in the whole country.

Im curious. Which sport is the current second most popular in Spain if its not tennis?

Hard to say, I think tennis already is but also basketball is popular, a lot of people follow motor races also.

Disagree, formula 1 just recently and bc Alonsoīs success. Tennis is in 2nd place I believe, not by a good enough margin though.

I thought tennis was the 2nd most popular sport.

I mean I think handball is popular, but not to that level, the rally and the motorcycles as well.

Yeah I may have expressed badly, what I meant in my first post was Nadal will finally settle tennis as the 2nd most popular sport in Spain with a consistent gap ahead the 3rd one.

Golf is also becoming more and more popular in Spain and there was a huge boom and increase regarding golf courses over the last years, but I don't think this is necessarily true for the ratings of golf TV broadcasts as well.

I have yet to congatulate you Deivid! :yeah:

What a great moment that must have been for you, for all the belief you had in Rafa ;)

He was the dominant player by far throughout the entire clay season and fully deserved to win RG, all the best in the future!

The Final had more tv-spectators that the soccer match Espaņa-Lituania (World Cup Qualys)

Now that's the way it should be! :D

I saw that huge flag in Madrid on TV... was that on c/Alcala or sth? Trying to put on a big show for 2012! VAMOS, MADRID!!!

So happy that Rafa saved this RG :worship:

Well I don't have a problem with Nadal and he is just taking the next step that the others paved before him and if he can get more kids playing the game and they can make it accessible for them, then that can only be good. posted by GWH

i think...Nadal is definetely bringing new spirits to the game..being a young man with this fighting spirits and powerful mentality ..with his untraditional clothes...all in all..rightnow he s a phenomena..at least in Spain i think and for all young tennis lovers all over the world..this can add new talented gifts to the Game.. :D

And hey DEIVID...Congratulations!!...this match must have made your day..the best :D :bigclap: ...it made mine too :yeah:

A couple of funny things I saw today:

Iīve seen today some old videos of Nadal at an age of 8-9 years, and he already fist-pumped and said "vamos" lol

Hugo Gatti also wrote today Nadal is a "football player that plays tennis" bc of his goal-scoring like celebrations.

The German Eurosport commentator also said something like that. He thought that Nadal's celebrations look more like after scoring a goal in football :rolls:

MARCA and AS, the most important sportnewspapers today
My goodness - I saw this and thought to myself : "SHit! I forgot to buy the papers today!" I had intended to buy the three main papers here that I would find sports news in. I biked to the store right after reading this post and they still had lots of copies.

Phew.

Thanks for the reminder ;)

(I don't get either of these papers in Canada, but there were articles about him in our papers and blurbs on the main pages too ;))

Have you read Pat Cash's article from before the final, about how Rafa beat him when he was 14? lol

He said that at the time he felt Rafa's jumping around and such nonsense was a bit disrespectful but that he's since swallowed his pride ;)

I can link to it if you haven't read it.

There actually is somewhere in this city that I can buy spanish media, but it would be closed now :p

It runs in the family and yes you can tell there is a football instinct and maybe uncle Miguel gave him some insight into handling the big occasion.

What impressed me more was that video where you could see him pumping himself up with some funny "Vamos" when being 8-9 years old, even on a training match against his uncle

As usual you missed the point.

The point was that he would develop a liking for Nadal if Nadal won the next two slams this year. That wouldn't make him just a claycourt player, now would it? Try to keep up, will you?

No, I get the point very well. You're suggesting that RonE is a bandwagon jumper who will only start to support players when they've become massively successful, ie winning a three-quarter Slam. No evidence whatsoever for this, of course, but don't let that stop you from doing exactly what you criticised someone earlier in the thread for - making things up.

Saw a video of him at 13 doing the same pumping that we all know today. I found that funny. It's definitely in its genes.

Bruguera, Costa and Corretja ooze charisma, but shouting after every 2nd point makes someone charismatic now.

Still have nightmares of Brugera hitting moonballs against Arazi in RG.

Nadal is a jerk. He didn't shake Purta's hand after the match and he didn't even congratulate him in his speech! Hell, that was thwe first thing Puerta did! That shows what kind of person Nadal is. Just an arrogant jerk.

Hello, from what I saw, he did. I don't know what post-match ceremony you saw, but he was very cordial and congratulatory toward Puerta.

sigma I have the proof on DVD if you need further defense against the playa' hata'. ;) First thing Nadal did after getting up off the ground was run to embrace Puerta, and the whole last segment of his speech was congratulating Puerta.

Indeed. I sat through his speech and was getting uneasy when he hadn't mentioned Puerta yet, but finally he did at the end and I was relieved. I was worried that he got caught up in the moment, but he didn't let me down ;)

Nadal showed a hell of a lot more respect towards Puerta than the BBC Interactive channel which was covering the match did - the moment the latter began his speech, a big green box was flashed up with the match result, virtually obscuring the whole screen, and then coverage ended when he was still midway through speaking.
