Three years in a row with an unseeded player in the Final

I was just wondering if anyone else thinks it's a bit odd that Puerta makes three years in a row at Roland Garros that an unseeded player has made it to the final. I'm trying to think back now to when the last time was in one of the other slams that an unseeded player was in the final (Wimbledon 2002?).

Is there just something about Roland Garros that equalizes everyone's chances to reaching the final, regardless of seeding?

The only thing I can think of is that there are players who tend to only do well on clay "Clay-court specialists" and basically do not do well the rest of the year. But at Roland Garros it's there time to shine. :)

Marat was in the final of AO 04, and he wasn't seeded. :D

For a start the draw was very top heavy this year - not to say that the bottom half was full of poor players, but most of the better seeded players were in the top half, so there was an opportunity for someone like Puerta to make the most of their draw. Overall, the depth and unpredictability of clay certainly contributes to these surprise finalists. I always think the idea that 20 or 30 players can win RG is something of an exaggeration - maybe Gaudio came out of left field, but the last real shock winner before then was Guga in 97 - but there are 30 players capable of causing upsets and putting together winning runs. Puerta still had to earn his place in the final with those two five-setters, and both times he recovered from deficits to claim victory.

Yes, but is not only the clay specialists reason, becuase in 2003 the unseeded player that reached the final was Verkerk and we all know he isnt a clay specialist so i think there is something else  ...

Verkerk had some of his best career results on clay apart from RG. Davis Cup, titles...
