Jewish tennis players

This is a serious request. I'm doing some research for my own interest. There was a book published in the mid-1960's called the Encyclopedia of Jews in Sports that included a chapter on Jewish tennis players (obviously covering ones thru 1965).

I'm looking to research & compile info for Jewish tennis players for 1965 to the present. I know it's a massive undertaking, but what the hell.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Aaron Krickstein and Brad Gilbert I guess? Both were relatively solid players during the 1980s.

Nicolas Massu is the best player around which is Jewish.

I believe quite a few of the Israeli's around are Jewsih. Andy Ram is Jewish 100%, and I'm pretty sure Jonathan Erlich is.

Pete Sampras was also claimed to be Jewish, he has a Jewish father which doesn't make him Jewish from a Jewish point of view but would be classified as Jewish by other religions' rules.

On the WTA side Anna Smashanova is Jewish.

I believe Nico Massu's mom is Jewish and his Dad( from Palestine) is an Arab Christian. Nico was raised catholic as far as I know.

Never heard about Becker's mother before. And I thought it was Sampras's paternal grandfather. Sampras was not raised Jewish, I know he's said that.

Also, I've heard that Eliot Teltscher and Gabriel Marcus (ARG?) are Jewish, but I'm not 100% sure.

Althea Gibson's doubles partner (Angela Buxton?) was Jewish; the two of them allegedly hooked up as partners because they both could not play in most private clubs.

Also, a Dutch player from the 70s, Tom somebody, was Jewish. The name is escaping me.

Go to www.jewishsports.org and select "tennis" from the "Sports" drop-down menu at the top. You will find an extensive list of Jewish men and women tennis players.

Know this is a bit of bump, but negative on that Mardy Fish question. Interestingly, 3 of the top 10 American players were Jewish in the last 70s and early 80s: Brian Gottfried, Brian Teacher and Harold Solomon. I interviewed Gottfried for an unpublished article and he told me the story of how, when he was 10 or 11, he had to eat in the kitchen when he was training at a country club (in the Midwest!) while the rest of the kids ate in the dining room. He only figured it out when he got older that no Jews were allowed in the dining room. Dick Savitt was the only Jewish player to win Wimbledon (in 1951), the year he was famously spurned from Davis Cup play, reportedly due to religious prejudice of USLTA's Frank Shields, Brook Shields' grandfather. Well into the modern era, tbese Jewish players were winning tournaments on the eastern grass court circuit, culminating in the U.S. Championships at Forest Hills, all hosted by clubs that would never had admitted them to membership due to their religious restrictions.

Argentinian Martin Jaite is also Jewish, and was ranked as high as #10 in the world in his best year, 1990.

Hi Alan; Besides most of the obvious names mentioned, also Sampras has some Jewish roots, his grandmother on his dad's side was Jewish though he does not practice Judaism. John McEnroe and Patrick McEnroe are half Jewish as their mom is Jewish. Hope that helps you.

Michael Russell too. Fish is not, but he married a woman who is, her name is Stacy Gardner.

Eliot Teltscher. The one who had a match won against Vitas Gerulitas but only he noticed that his racket grazed the net on a volley and told the officials about his infraction. Point and evenually the game to Gerulitas.

Jews are talented in everything. Sampras is a good example.

What is your source of information re: Mrs. McEnroe? I believe both McEnroe parents are Catholic.
