It was hard but i'm sure Richie's learnt a lot from this match which was a very good test and he's in the second round of Wimbledon for the first time!!! :bounce: :bigclap:
He scared us (and himself i'm sure...) at his first RG match too so we could have predicted the loss of a set (it's not the first time...)...And he was against a good returner like him, someone who played well from the baseline and could do everything he does well actually (Kohlschreiber has a great backhand too...) but less well than him so it was a bit tough at times but he's through finally...
It is a good thing that he had to play that kind of match to enter the tournament well mentally, physically and everything...
Well done Richard! :worship:
BTW i voted too... ;)
Oh and i don't care if he wears a cap or not...He looks good with or without it... ;)

I got through :woohoo: I'm finished all my test thank goodness. Just my last day is the 27th to get report cards and my senior photos taken. (its going to interfere with my tennis again). This year I only took 4 which isn't bad compared to past years.
I was more instersted in seeing if Richard was winning then taking me test. I was sitting there writing my essay thinking did Richard win is he is winning. I get distracted way too easily

Apparently Richard had problems with his shoulder since his training match against Oli Rochus on Monday...I hope it is not too serious... Did he seem to be bothered by it for those who could see his match? :awww:

I only saw the first and second sets before they cut to Wayno, cos apprently that was the match that EVERYONE was looking forward too. Who ever made Josh Eagle a commentator should be shot. Anyway...Richie didn't seemed bothered by any shoulder problems? Didn't even know anything about it until I saw your post....second set was not so nice, Kohlschreiber was playing some lovely lovely tennis....be interested to see how Richie came back in the 3rd and 4th! Never the less, good win!

Elseneer is a tall guy, a good server, a "grasscourt specialist" or he has the game of one and he had very good stats in his R1 match against Starace but since Potito don't like grass it may not be revealing...
Richie already had to deal with this kind of players during the previous weeks and managed pretty well. It could be easier than his R1 match or be a typical tricky match because as Richie says, as a qualifier, Gilles Elseneer "won't have anything to loose" ...
But i hope Richard will win and he definitely can... ;)
Allez Richard! :bounce:

Allez, Richard! :bounce:

I'm a little worried though. 1) Apparently his shoulder is injured. 2) He said that he felt a little tired during his 1st round match. 3) He said he hoped he wouldn't face Nadal, which indicates that he doesn't have the confidence and belief that he can beat him.

delsa
06-22-2005, 07:48 PM
3) He said he hoped he wouldn't face Nadal, which indicates that he doesn't have the confidence and belief that he can beat him.

It's not what you think Silverwhite... Actually he came back from his first words where he said directly that he'd like to take his revenge and that he'd really like to play him...Then God knows what people around him told him, what he thought etc... But he said that of course he was wanting to play him but he was not happy to play him in the third round because it is always difficult ,no matter the surface, to play him etc... I think he thought his first words sounded a bit pretentious or something so he moderates his talk...
Here's what he said in today's L'Equipe(extract of the article...):

Translation:
HE IS WARY OF HIS NEXT opponent (Gilles Elseneer, ranked 192nd in the ATP rankings) as much as of Nadal (they could meet in the 3rd round).
"To the audience it seems easy but playing against a qualifier (Belgian Elseneer is a great server) is never evident. You have to be solid. Those guys don't have anything to loose. If i win, and if Nadal qualifies too, we could meet. (asked if it's true that he's really wanting/ looking forward to playing him...) No! I'm not happy! (he seems to be fed up with people asking him about this... ;) ) On the one hand , i really want to face him but on the other hand, nobody is happy to have to play Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament, even on grass, because, anyway i'm sure it will be very tough."

So it's strategic i think...Like when Nadal says he doesn't think he can go far in Wimbledon ( :bs: )... ;)

Pretty clear isn't it? Our Richie is learning quite fast to play mindgames too... ;)
He doesn't sound and look as chidlich and shy in French as in English BTW...But it must have got a lot to do with the fact that he's not confident in his English (shyness...) made of the vocabulary of a 3 years old (childlichness...)... :haha: But he's improving very fast in this field too so i should stop laughing about it... ;) especially with my English... :o

R. Gasquet - Day 4 Interview
Thursday, June 23, 2005

Q. A lot of teenagers coming through in the draw. Do you see yourselves all as rivals for the next few years or do you look to the established players as your main rivals at the moment?

RICHARD GASQUET: Both. It's both because they are old player, but they can play very good, too. The new player can play good, too. But old player can play a lot.

It's difficult to win everybody, the old and the new converse.

Q. You play probably Nadal in the next round. He's big news at the moment.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it's very difficult to play against him on grass court, on clay court. He's a fighter. It's always difficult to win him in three sets. I have to do a perfect match to win him.

Q. Can you talk about the difference of the match on grass versus clay, if you end up playing him, how you will approach it, what you need to do?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, it's not the same. On clay court you have to play baseline. On grass court you have to go to the volley. The serve is more important than on clay. Yeah, you have to serve better and to return better than on clay.

The key is the serve and the returns.

Q. Do you think you have a better chance on this surface than clay against him?

RICHARD GASQUET: Against who?

Q. Against Nadal.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yes, I think on three sets I have a better chance on grass court, and two sets is the same.

Q. You like the volleying?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yes, I like to go to volley. It's fun when you play a good volley. It's fun. I like to do a good volley, yes.

Q. How much have you played on grass?

RICHARD GASQUET: I played on Queen's. I played the quarterfinal. I won last week in Nottingham. Yeah, I played a lot of match. It's good for the confidence.

Q. Before this?

RICHARD GASQUET: Before I played on Queen's two years ago. Last year, just quallies in Wimbledon.

Q. Why did you miss Wimbledon Juniors?

RICHARD GASQUET: I was tired after a lot of tournament on clay court. I was too tired to play this tournament.

Q. Do you feel the match you're going to play against Nadal will be the first of many?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I hope. We are young, yes. Maybe we will play a lot of matches. I think so, yes.

Q. I mean, to contest finals?

RICHARD GASQUET: I don't know. We have time. Maybe. I don't know when, but, yeah, I think we can play finals in the future, yes.

Q. Can you tell us how much you know about the other players of your age?

RICHARD GASQUET: Of my age?

Q. 18, 19.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yes, there is Gael, too, Monfils. There is Czech players, Berdych. Not a lot. There is four or five very good players.

Q. Nadal thinks he can't win here at Wimbledon because he's not confident enough on grass. What about you and your confidence on grass?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, I think I can't win, too, because it's too long to play. I have to play five matches. It's too difficult for me now. But I think I can go far. We will see. I don't know when I will lose, but I think I can play a good tournament.

Q. How confident are you on this surface?

RICHARD GASQUET: I am very confident because I played a lot of matches. I won last week my first title in Nottingham. Of course, I have a lot of confidence, yes.

Q. How well do you know Nadal? You are friendly?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yes, we are friend. Is difficult because we don't speak English very good. It's difficult for us.

Q. You communicate in English?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, in English. Not a lot because we speak so bad.

Q. How long have you known him?

RICHARD GASQUET: A lot of time because I played him in Tarbes, Les Petit A's.

Q. When was this?

RICHARD GASQUET: 13, six years ago.

Q. What did you learn from playing him recently at Roland Garros?

RICHARD GASQUET: No, I learned nothing. No, nothing. I was disappointed to lose. I know how I have to play him on grass court, so I hope to play against him. Yeah, I have information to play him.

Q. It's very unusual for a Frenchman or a European to like grass. You seem to like it. When did you discover that you had a great feel for grass?

RICHARD GASQUET: I think French players play better on grass court than on clay court.

Q. Really?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah. Me, I didn't know how I can play on grass because I don't play a lot. So, yeah, when I went on Queen's, I won two matches, three matches. After I was a little bit confident. But, yeah, it was after my title in Nottingham, I know I can play good on grass court because I won a tournament. It's a great surface for me.

Great win Richard :woohoo:

I got to see parts of it on ESPN. The 3rd set tiebreak and the last two games of the match (wow, so much right lol). ESPN kept showing Maria even though she won love and one. That really annyoyed me especially when somethign exciting was happening on the outside courts. Anyway different story, but I am so happy Richard won!!!

I am so relieved that this was over with. Really close first three sets. Would of preferred for him to win in 3 but I'll take 4.

Thanks for the interview. I was just reading it at the site  I would also love to see a Rafael and Richard convo in English. So cute!

Wot a great win, I actually saw the whole match :woohoo: God i was like on the edge of my seat cos Elseneer had a strong serve and Gasquet did not return much on the 1st set and there a lot of points he could of easily made on other days that he missed but Yeah he goes through to play another Giles

I think he had a few brain cells knocked out of him though because before the match started he kinda bumped into the sound thing (the catapilly looking device) joking ummmm his next opponant is probably a tricky one as well, i saw bits of the nadal match and he was pretty good, but no match for our Richie :yeah:

detheo

oh, the match is tough, i think, but so many tbs is good for richard, he will get more and win the next, come on, richard Yeah, next match's really tough for Richard. I saw Muller against Nadal on TV and boy, is he good. But Richard can totally beat him
However, if he wins his 3rd round, he'll face either Murray or Nalbandian. And these are two very dangerous players : Nalbandian has fared pretty well on grass and Murray is now Britain's last hope. I saw him play in Queen's against Thomas Johansson and he was quite impressive, even though he eventually lost the match (but that's beacause Thomas is a hell of a player ;)).
It'd be very interesting to see Richard play against Murray, because both are the same age (Murray was also born in 1987 -a damn good year for tennis players !) but also because Murray's behavior on court is quite the opposite of Richard's one.
I think Richard can make it to the QF's but the draw gets way too tough after that.
By the way, didn't Richard break the "Nottingham curse" ? Hee.

I have to do that if Richard plays against David Nalbandian...

but... thinking about tomorrow...

very solid match from richard. He looked relax and confident. :)

Next round: david nalbandian(finalist in 2002)

andy murray could have beat him but wasted his opportunities, david is experienced and used it well.Richard has to be really "realistic" with all the occasions that he will have against him.

I watched his match and: wow! Richard handled everything with aplomb and he played very well even if Muller did play very well too at times... He saved the only two break points he had against him with two consecutive aces, handled the tie-break perfectly etc... Now that he's in the second week, he just have to give his best and we'll see...
Good luck against Nalbandian! Allez Richard! :bounce:

David Nalbandian (ARG)[18] vs Richard Gasquet (FRA)[27]

best wishes to our richard
to compare with david, richard needs to serve well enough and be firm to catch the bps, had better into a fast beginning, he will win! for we all know that david has a very bad serve, it is a pity, but david has more experiences than richard; i am not sure now whether the match is tough or not, fast or not, anyway, i have more confidence that richard will into the top 8

ok I'm back from crying into my pillow and I feel better now. Life goes on, and Richy was just too tired. He's played too many matches lately. here's his short interview that proves he's overtired:

R. Gasquet - Day 7
Monday, June 27, 2005

Q. You ran out of steam at the end a little. You played many matches in the last three months.

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I played a lot in the last one month because I played Queen's, I won Nottingham. Yeah, I was too tired in the third set. It was too difficult for me.

So he played a very good match. I can win the second set, the first. And after, was too difficult with all my matches I played, so I couldn't play more.

Q. I think you said you saw a little of his match against Murray. Did you feel from what you saw that maybe you could do better than Murray in this match?

RICHARD GASQUET: No. Each match is never the same match. He can play better against me than Murray. No, every match is not the same. It's never the same match.

Have a rest now, Richy! Take care, we all love you.

I was kind of used to see him win, so it feels a bit weird right now. But fourth round is a very good result and he can keep all his dignity. He had a quite a good run, didn't he? Still very proud of him and how he improved on grass this year.

Richard's interview from Eurosport.fr :

Je n'ai rien à me reprocher.

... ;) A bad translation of it is soon to be posted... :o

About what he plans to do next:

WHAT (IMMEDIATE) FUTURE FOR THE NEW FRENCH NUMBER ONE?
When he was leaving the big press conferences room, where he just had his last interview in English (like an high school student during the "Baccalauréat" oral... < Don't know why they said that...), Gasquet admited that he was "very happy to return to [his] home." "I will rest 2 or 3 days and have another wisdom tooth removed (< Ouch! Did he really have to say that? ...So it won't be all rest for him... :haha: He should be more secret about his private life... ) I hope to be selected in the group of five players who will participate in the Davis Cup tie (Russia vs. France). Then, we'll head for the hardcourt : Washington, Montréal, Cincinnati and the US Open, with no point to defend for me, on a surface that i like as much as clay and grass. So it looks promising."
Similar talk from Deblicker with more certitude about the Davis Cup: "Richard will lay down his racquet then he'll get back to training - if he's selected - next Tuesday, just before the beginning of the French team's training "stage" (< what is the English word? ) in Roland-Garros. Then, we'll keep working on the serve and volley, going to the net, and his "jeu de jambe" (< don't know how to translate that... :o ). The emphasis will be laid on his physical preparation and on preventive cares too."

I actually got upset about the whole thing. Richy looked so confused and powerless and didn't know how to progress in the match which was his downfall and was crying and everything, I was a basket case! I'm also disappointed he didn't get a chance to play on centre court, oh well next time.

He has to work on this physical conditioning no doubt about it, he went down like a fly in the third set. I think he should train with Nadal he'll given him a lesson or two in keeping up his fitness LOL

Saw Richy take his shirt off a couple of times, and he's so skinny! I wonder how he pulls off that backhand sometimes LOL but being in shape, I think will help his fitness and mental endurances in matches and he won't give in so easily next time.

Now I hope he gets selected for Davis Cup (they'll be idiots not to choose him LOL), cause my fox sports his showing the Russia/France matches and that if he plays my other fave player SAFIN, that would be a dream match for me :D *dreams*

06-28-2005, 03:03 PM
Q: How do you explain this defeat to Nalbandian?

Richard Gasquet : I have played a lot this month. I was tired and in the third set, it was too difficult. I am disappointed, yes, but no... It was hard. I didn't served as well [as in the previous rounds], I was physically tired and he played a great match. He didn't help me. I tried my best in the first two sets. He played really well and is a really strong player. I had to be in top form, at 200%, to beat him. He played well on all the points. I can not beat such players all the time. He is one of the best players in the world. I have nothing to say, the result is logical.

Q: Nalbandian was smart to make you move around a lot...

R.G : He defended a lot. He played a lot of lobs and made me smash a lot. He has great touch and does not make errors from the back of the court. He returned better. His backhand is strong. He doesn't miss the lines very often. I served rather badly and he returned everything. I knew that physically, it would be a bit difficult. The first two sets were very hard. I wasn't able to win them. I had my chance in the second, but he broke back. He played the big points very well. I don't have to reproach myself. The loss of the second set, on top of all, was discouraging. I knew that I could not come back.

Q: What is your assessment of your experience on grass and how do you see the rest of the season?

R. G : The assessment is good. I lost against a player who played very, very well. The assessment is perfect for me. I know I can play better here in the future. It's importnat for me to know that I can play on grass as well. I think I have the potential to win here one day, but I have to continue to work. I hope to play the Davis Cup and after that, I will rest for a bit. I am available for the captain to place on the team. The Davis Cup is a dream. He [Forget] has not told me anything, but I hope that it will not take long for him to call me. I think I deserve a place. I would be very happy to be [in the team].

Saw Richy take his shirt off a couple of times, and he's so skinny! I wonder how he pulls off that backhandMass has nothing to do with how hard you hit the ball. Technique and co-ordination is everything.

Take a look at Federer, whose built like an 8 year old kid. He can hit on par with Safin and Agassi, in terms of power.

I saw the match and it was really hard to watch all his matches have been edge of the seat matches which is great, I thought he was gonna do a comeback in the second, but when he was broken back i think he just lost belief and confidence and i think that showed in the 3rd

However I think he has done so well to get this far and may the future bring him more hapiness

p.s. I think his fanbase has grown over the past weeks cos during his match there were loads of Allez, come on richard/gasquet etc... and nalbandian didnt really get any so thats great :yeah: Good luck in whatever you do next Richard

Hi Richard fans :wavey: I just wanted to add my words of praise for the way Richard played yesterday and throughout the grass court season this year. I was on Court 2 yesterday cheering for David, - and I can tell you that Richard's play in the first 2 sets made me really nervous  If he had won that second set I think the result would have been different - not sure how much energy David would have had left after his 5 set win over Andy Murray. Anyway - good luck to Richard in the future - he is a great prospect.

Reading this, I was just wondering if there wasn't some French fans on this board who'd like to go to Paris next Tuesday and try to meet Richard. I actually did it once for Paulo -another favorite player of mine- and we didn't succeed, but at least we tried. I'd really like to try this time. Roland-Garros is quite accessible, isn't it?
