An idea developed from another thread....What would be your nightmare match to watch?

Early contenders :-

Massu v Chela on a slow clay court :scared:
Karlovic v Arthurs on grass :scared:
Srichaphan v Fish on clay :scared:
Gaudio v Volandri on grass :scared:

Karlovic v Arthurs on grass :scared::haha::haha: well at least it'd be the quickest all-tiebeak match the world had ever seen!!!

I wouldn't mind watching the last two of those four you mention, incongruity over uniformity any day.

Deboogle!.
05-17-2005, 08:59 PM
Well what's funny about the last two is that there would have to be a winner of each match meaning either Fish or Srichaphan won a match on clay and Gaudio or Volandri won a match on grass.. so at least it'd be amusing!

What?!? Roddick-Agassi in a semi-final or final in Australian Open, US Open or Tennis Masters Cup isn't a great game? I say this tournaments because Eurosport transmit them.

When was the last time Greg Took Andy to a TB :p ;)
Arthur's-Karlovic scoreline would be something like this : 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-6 22-20 after 4 hrs of play

Think it would have been Wimbledon 2003 when Greg had his famous "outburst" when someone called out from the crowd. I'm not a fan of either - so maybe someone who is can put me right on that if I've got the date wrong.

When was the last time Greg Took Andy to a TB :p ;) What's funny is in the 6 matches they've played (2 on grass, mind you), 18 sets, only 3 have gone to TB :p... and they actually played 3 times on grass ;)
Arthur's-Karlovic scoreline would be something like this : 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-6 22-20 after 4 hrs of play :haha: that's true, I forgot that one would have to break the other. But can you imagine a match on grass between them that was three tiebreak sets? it'd be 7-6 6-7 7-6 in like an hour :haha:

My nightmare: any WTA match.

(sorry for the ladies reference here on MTF but I'd watch a mens match, any mens match over a 'top' womens one any day, any time, from anywhere. Our local HS's boys team is pretty good :) ).

To the bigoted anti-Americans, no.

Whatever people think of Andy he's not just a big serve. Obviously he wouln't be quite the player he is without the serve, but he doesn't rely on it as much as say Arthurs/Karlovic. I'd have confidence Andy could get a few breaks against Karlovic/Arthurs, I'm not sure about vice versa though, they're returning skills leave a lot to be desired.

I'm still most :scared: about Massu v Chela on slow clay. It would be painful to watch. At least Karlovic/Arthurs would be quite quick with all the aces.

One doesn't need to be anti-american to find american players boring :)

Sjengster
05-18-2005, 08:43 PM
Good point there, maratski - most of the American players are pretty one-dimensional, although perhaps the most one-dimensional of the lot, Dent, is the only one I like. I guess I just find the majority of them a little... bland. And of course whenever I see them playing on my TV screen I get out the Stars and Stripes and the lighter fuel so I can fully express my annoyance.

The fact is alot of people dont like americans because of their personalities and games (not because of their nationality, that is irrelevant; it just so happens that alot of these so called boring players are from the usa). There are few americans i like such as kuznetsov, raymond so it isnt like i have a problem with americans in general.

We all know that non-U.S. players are ideal and superior to U.S. players.
Only blame the players, but don't blame the parents and how they were raised.

Yes indeed, I hold Phil Dent and Jerry Roddick personally responsible for the lack of entertainment on my TV when an American player is involved.

Well, their last two matches have gone all the way to final set tiebreaks - I didn't see the match in Cincy, but everyone on here nominated it as just about the best of the summer hardcourt season. I did, however, have the pleasure of watching the match in Queens 2003 which confirmed to me once and for all that Roddick in full flight is the death of tennis personified.

Boom. 15-0
Boom. 30-0
Boom. 40-0
Boom. Game Roddick.

And the thing is, unlike most people when they talk about his game, this time I'm not exaggerating - it really was like that. For a period during the second set Roddick was coming up to the line and hitting four serves, three of which were aces, none of which were returned, and Agassi was simply walking from side to side without any purpose whatsoever. It's a testament to his fighting ability that he got back into the match, only to then blow a *5-4 lead in the deciding tiebreak with a simple error, miss a matchpoint on Roddick's serve and end up losing when by the end he was the better player, as he had been in all their previous matches.

Here's a nightmare: Mary Jo Fernandez against anyone. This woman could win a match 6-1 6-1 and it would take 2 hours which consisted of many moonballs, tons of DF's, etc. Sorry, had to vent about MJF. :)

Hey, Patty is the Master! Or Mistress, I suppose... I still remember that giant-killing run she had in Charleston back in 2002. Can anyone else say they beat Mauresmo, Serena and Capriati back to back in the same tournament?

the cincinnati match was pretty similar. agassi outplayed Roddick from baseline but he could not do anything with andy´s serve (he fired about 31 aces and a tons of service winners).

Morrison v Johansson on clay.

Couple of big servers with no real all-court game.

You could replace that with any other one-dimensional servers.

Actually, believe it or not, Massu against Chela in the 2003 or 2004 mexican open -Acapulco- an exciting blo to blow three setter, was probably the best match of the tourney, and yes, it was in a slow red humid clay ;)

Yeah, I don't see how any combination of CHI/ARG/ESP players lumped together on clay could turn out to be a snooze-fest.

Massu, I know personally is one of the grittiest players on tour. Can't see him on any nightmare list.

I think it was 2002 Rosie. If Roddick and Rusedski played again this time, it would be a different match to that one because Andy has 3 years worth of improvement under his belt, and realistically, Rusedski must be past his peak.
