U.S. Open Will Use Blue Courts for Better Vision

WHITE PLAINS, New York (May 16) - The U.S. Open will use blue instead of green tennis courts this year in an attempt to make balls easier to see for players and TV viewers.

The area outside the court's lines will stay green, U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier said on Monday.

Blue courts also will be used for the 10 tournaments in the US Open Series, the summer hard-court circuit leading up to the season's final Grand Slam.

The first event with the new color will be the RCA Championships at Indianapolis from July 18-24.

I don't know what blue they're thinking of but it's probably going to look a lot like the courts at Indian Wells. :) Although personally I really liked the lighter blue courts at Athens last year!

I'll bet this is all done strictly to favor the Americans.

Yeah, I thought some USO Series tournaments were purple courts.

Some of them may already have been, but I think the point is that they're adopting it for ALL the tourneys now

Just like Roland Garros has red courts to favor the Latin Europeans and South Americans? Seriously, the color makes no difference. Colors in tennis courts are just for aesthetic value.

Time to get tangy working in the stand-up clubs, her vast comedic talents are evidently wasted on here.

You'd be first in line for her show. :)

The US Open series was a huge success last year so maybe this is just another way to streamline all the tournaments?

Personally, I like the purple courts myself. You can see the ball very well and it's purdy. :)

Blue is perfect. I like that decision. Blue color + good hard court = perfect combination.

I love it, I like blue courts much better than green ones, unless they're light green as in the Australian Open. The blue courts will actually fit the US Open's logo and will add to its uniqueness (therefore, the others' GS as well, especially AO's).

I liked the blue they used in Athens, but I guess it's gonna be the dark blue used in Indian Wells.

It's great, as long as they stay away from blue balls.

Am I remembering incorrectly (entirely possible) - but didn't the USO courts used to be blue a few years ago?

A very good idea. I always like playing on blue courts as it DID make the balls easier to see especially if the color outside the lines was green.

I wish they would make the clay blue at RG. When the sun is shining in Paris I see nothing but glare on my TV screen and have no idea where the ball is. Same for Hamburg this week. At least it was mostly cloudy.

Now that would be something. You are right about when the sun shines in Paris. Is it ever a glorious time everywhere except for when you want to watch tennis! It does become hard to follow the ball. But blue clay would be too weird....

I thought the court at the Olympics were great and just behind the base line the words Athens 2004 was great. If they do that at the US Open it will look really good.

USTA Announces Blue Print For U.S. Open
By Tennis Week
05/17/2005

The U.S. Open will come complete the blues this year. In an effort to enhance ball visibility, the USTA announced that all courts for the U.S. Open and U.S. Open Series tournaments will have a new court color scheme — a blue inner court surrounded by a green outer court.

The USTA said the new court color will heighten visibility of the ball for players, fans attending tournaments, and television viewers. In addition, it will provide a signature look and identifiable link between the U.S. Open Series and the U.S. Open.

This new look marks the first change of court colors at the U.S. Open since the event moved to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., in 1978 from Forest Hills. The U.S. Open (formerly the U.S. Championships) was played on grass from 1881 through 1974. The tournament moved to green clay from 1975 though 1977, before moving to hardcourt at the National Tennis Center in 1978. All courts at the U.S. Open will continue with a DecoTurf II hardcourt surface.

"The new court colors have been tested and proven to enhance visibility of the ball for both players and fans," said Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive, Professional Tennis, USTA. "In addition, it provides an instant visual link between the U.S. Open Series tournaments and the U.S. Open, helping to create a unified 'regular season' for tennis leading up to the U.S. Open."
