With these players, I assume this is on clay?

I guess it must be in Karol's hometown, but still... choosing to play a clay challenger over a grass one is questionable.

And Hrbaty has no business playing challengers.

Even though it's the Czech Republic...I think there are still ties with Slovakia when it comes to things like this. When he was born he was Czechaslovakian (sp?) until the split.

Hrbaty, I agree. Jiri also. Tomas...the way he's playing...I'm neutral.

I don't think it's right that all 4 WCs were used for hometown boys and none of the young ones who could use a break. You can't tell me that they had no talent to give it to.

Well, they used to be one country, but they never wanted it that way, really. They were forced into it by several larger powers. Czechs and Slovaks haven't gotten along that well, historically. That's why there's no Czechoslovakia anymore.

 I'm not going to get into a political discussion about this. I'm talking about the human side of things and why WCs when to Czechs and Slovaks.

I know about all the aspects but I don't want to egg you on by debating about this in a tournament thread. Not going to bring that bad karma :)

Tennis724,

Thanks a bunch. I bet G Lapentti, so I guess we are rooting against each other, lol. I also took Serra, so I am glad that there is a website at least.

I usually go to stevegtennis for these challengers, but I could have sworn he didn't have a link for this challenger.

I don't bet on people. I think I'm one of the rare people who actually root for someone without having money on the line  .

It took me awhile to find the site. But really you only needed to go to the fact sheet (in the Calendar on SteveG's site) and use the link there and then click something (can't remember what) on that page and you find the Czech Open site.

I one of those who has to have money on something to make it worthwhile. Sad, isn't it? lol

Now back to scores,

Serra beat Beck 6-0 6-3
Marcaccio leads Hrbaty 6-3
Niemenen leads Stakhovsky 7-5

Tricky_Forehand

Don't know if I should be surprised about Beck losing. Serra seems to be doing well this year.

cerberus
05-31-2005, 02:36 PM
Beck doesn't seem to like the clay courts. He seems better suited for the hard surface. Serra, meanwhile, prefers the clay, so i thought it was worth a shot, even at -173 (5Dimes). I hope these scores are correct, as we all know that sometimes they get reversed or corrected later on.

Thanks for the tip, especially with the grass season coming up. I like playing Beck on the hard courts, as he is usually the underdog, but he is quite capable on that surface. I would only bet against him on clay, and I'll keep an eye on him with the grass courts.

I hate that the match had to end that way but I'm glad that Gio did what he did. By doing that he allowed Alex to have the points and the money instead of taking it and then probably giving Vik a walkover. I don't know for sure but I think that Alex & Gio are friends. Or it could be that Gio thought one more game could do worse damage then he already felt. We may never know.

I honestly couldn't answer your question now. I saw retirement and went into a near panic. I had only 2 hours sleep before getting up at 4 AM to see if there was a live score. Of course there wasn't but I stayed up in hopes of getting an update. Of course, then confusion took place for 3 more hours. Needless to say, I won't be believing any scores on the tourney site till I see the pdf to confirm it
