http://www.telecomitaliamasters.it/pop_news_center.asp?IDNews=1001/05/2005 12:26 - ALMAGRO, ON FIRE, REACHES MAIN EVENT

Spain's Nicolas Almagro earned himself a place in the main draw on Sunday with a class performance, easing past fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura 62 62.

Hitting well on both wings and showing good temperament, the 20-year old, who broke into the world top 100 for the first time last year, is clearly on the up and will be keen to capitalise on Sunday's performance against one of the big boys in the main event.

Nicolas took two games in the first set to wake up, fInding himself a break and 2-0 down, but as soon as he found his stride there was no doubt about who was the better player on the court.

Ventura did not have the armoury to challenge his opponent and struggled with the extreme topspin groundstrokes. He returned serve so far back he collided with the line judges on several occasions.

Almagro on the other hand let rip with his wristy forehand, gaining in confidence as the match went on. His movement on court was however a little suspect; he often improvised shots because he found himself out of position, and one wonders if he has a tendency towards laziness.

In other matches, Stanislas Wawrinka, Victor Hanescu and Julien Benneteau all qualified. Hanescu will consider his three-set win over Jonas Bjorkman to be a decent scalp, given that Jonas used to be a top-ten player.http://www.telecomitaliamasters.it/pop_news_center.asp?IDNews=1101/05/2005 16:27 - MONACO SCRAPES THROUGH

Argentine Juan Monaco scraped through to the main draw on Sunday with a fairly unimpressive win over the out-of-form Dutchman Peter Wessels. The score was 63 36 63.
Monaco was unsatisfied with his own game even while winning and gave away numerous points with erratic serving and short groundstrokes. Both players struggled to hold serve.
The Casablanca finalist, one of a large group of professionals to have emerged from Argentina in recent years, threw his racket around and seemed to be battling himself for most of the game before buckling down to business in the third set.
Fortunately for him, his opponent was even more unsettled. At one point Wessels seemed to deliberately hit the ball out of play during a rally. The Dutchman seemed unable to take advantage of his height and uncomfortable on clay, not knowing whether to engage in long rallies or rush the net.
Paul-Henri Mathieu (pictured) has also qualified for the main draw.
